Community Team End of Season Review

Welcome to the FF247 Community Team review for the 2016/17 season.

It’s fair to say it’s been a season of highs and lows for the Community Team. Let’s start with the low; GW 31 rank of 1,005,432. Ouch. And onto one of the highs; from GW 31, seven straight green arrows and a final rank of 308,237. Not a great rank and a drop off from last season, but an increase of nearly 700,000 places in the last seven weeks is no mean feat. All that voted, take a bow!

Let’s take a look at some stats behind the Community Teams season using the excellent FPL Statistico site (http://anewpla.net).

The FF247 Community Team’s ID is 79962 if you’d like to check out the facts for yourself.

And what does that all mean? The interesting facts are the variables that, as a community, we control so captain, who we benched and transfers are harder to summarise:

We picked the highest scorer in our team as captain 58% of the time (an increase from 45% last season).
We benched six goals out of a total of 98 (compared to benching two goals of 109 last season).
We benched two assists out of a total of 66 (compared to benching two assists of 68 last season).
We benched 10 clean sheets from a possible 53 (compared to eight clean sheets out of a total of 61 last season).
Median Gameweek Score of 55 (compared to a score of 55 last season).
In top X% of all users 6.84% (compared to 2.68% last season).

So the season has ended; we have a new champion, three teams relegated, three teams promoted, Jose continues to park expensive busses, Ibra is ageless, Kun is mortal (especially with the rising of Jesus) and sadly this will be the last season for the FF247 Community Team. The decision has been made by all involved that the time to end is now. Votes have been on the decline of late and the time commitments this takes, especially on Gallant Pioneer with the voting is too much.

We hope you have enjoyed being a part of this amazing experience and interestingly there appears to be other community teams popping up on Twitter. When the idea was born three years ago on the banks of the Waikato river here in sunny NZ, we didn’t know it would come to fruition and end up on the site as a regular article.

A few thank you’s; Elle, thanks for all your help and ideas from the start. GP, you took the idea and ran with it; developing the voting system and you drove the publicity both on site and Twitter. Cookie, Kop, Init and the others that have made it happen. And of course the biggest thank you goes to all of you that have voted.

Check the comments on this thread, the tweet was jaw dropping enough, but the comments on it are funny as shite.

Well a massive thank you to Alex ,GP and Elle, This was a great idea to begin with and the work you put in everyweek, especially GP, was brutal. Loved to be a part of it if not as often as I wanted. Also that was a very decent final rank considering we were far from those numbers all the season. Good effort lads and thank you.

How many can you guys name? I haven’t been watching EPL long enough, but I got 9, almost only recent ones although I did catch a couple of old ones just because they are famous enough for me to have seen them in some old video.

I was thinking a lot about the dilemma: To hit or not to hit! I run some analysis I would like to share. I tried to take a little bit wider look at things and use bigger amount of historical data to try to find some clues.

I love to play with data and hopefully some of you will find my attempt useful.

General description: Unfortunately I don`t know programming (yet…) and had to rely on copy/paste. For this reason I had to limit my sample size. At the same time I wanted this analysis to be as representative as possible. I have copied more than 11 thousand scores (including transfers and team value) from players who finished season 16/17 in TOP 100K. I divided the sample into groups based on final rank. As you can see the data for every single TOP 1000 team has been included. After TOP1000 I have randomly chosen final scores and copied whole data for those scores. What I mean is that for managers aroung 16K OR score was 2183. If I chose score to be included, than I included every single manager who finished with chosen score. The first table has all the details of sample content.

The following graph shows the sample broken down per number of transfer. As could be expected the biggest number of player had between 35 and 60 transfer. The actual highest number of transfers in the sample was 44. This graph also shows how wide was the range of total number of transfers. There were 2 players in TOP 1000 who had 89 transfers. The highest number of transfers in sample was 138 by someone around 100K.

That would be the general background.

        • konstro says:

          And the sample content table

        • konstro says:

Since the reason for analysis was to find out if the hits pay I tried to see if there is some distinct difference in number of the transfers between managers who finished in different OR groups.

What I have found was that the difference was no more than 2 transfers per group per season. I don`t think this would be deciding factor. Top1000 and 90K group had around 47 average transfers. THe highest were 14K and 16K with almost 49 average transfers.

        • konstro says:

So if not number of transfers was the deciding factor I have compared Individual Data plots per group to see if anything can be find there.

It has to be said that the spread for Top 1000 managers was much smaller than for those closer to 100K. Standard deviation for TOP 1000 was around 8 while 100K 12-13. I`m still not sure what it means. I guess as expected as a group the top 1000 managers were more disciplined than those with lower rank.

        • konstro says:

Finally I tried something else. I calculated average score based on number of transfers (across the groups).

          Here results were very interesting.

It looks like the best number of transfers was somewhere between 42 and 50. That would translate into 7 to 15 hits per season. The scores for this group have achieved more than 2250 point on average ( in the sample presented) . It looks like lack of hits or overhitting was hampering the performance. I have included only transfers between 30 and 70 in this part as groups with less or more transfers were vulnerable to outliers.

Anyway, I just want to put it here for a discussion.

I personally wish I would choose better when deciding to take hits last season. I made few bad decision as for example bringing Kane before his Hull/Burnley at home debacle. What made things worse I had Eriksen as capitain and changed it to Harry. That hit costed me more than 20 points.

But looking at data ( still remembering is only sample) hits if they are well thought out and taken at strategic time can bring big impact for the managers. Totally avoiding hist is not the best way to go.

          Nothing earth shattering I`m afraid.

Thats some work you have put in there Konstro. Nice 1. I am not surprised that there appears to be an optimum number of hits taken to make the best score. Obviously too many is costly but also refusing to take any hits at all can also have an impact. I guess that is why hits are so often a hot topic. I guess its a case of keeping the numbers down and acting when necessary. Easier said than done!!!!
    Well done anyway mate

Over the past few seasons i have taken hits up untill christmas based on building transfer value and then attempted to tighten up my game for the second half of the season. Still not found the right balance yet but I have finished seasons strongly. Next year I will be less focused on transfer value but still keep a close eye on it. Reduce the first half hits by about 50% and see how that goes. Im still winning one of my mini leagues but not quite there with the other………. Yet
Thanks to everyone on this site. Hope to contribute more myself next season
