FPL Team News and Predicted Line-ups Gameweek 24

Welcome to Gameweek 24. A lunch time fixture gets us going with the disappointing Chelsea taking on Brighton. That is followed by six 3pm games. Arsenal and there ongoing fire sale clashes with the genius Hodgson and his Palace crew. We also get to see assist machine Pogba tangling with Burnley, Everton spar with West Brom, Leicester take on the sinking ship that is Watford, Stoke battle Huddersfield and The Hammers battle Wilson and his knee. The end of the Saturday fixtures see City take out their frustrations versus Rafa and his men.

Sunday brings us one solitary fixture. Where we will see if Southampton can stop the goal scoring machine…Son and his sidekick Harry.

Monday closes out the game-week with another put them to the sword moment as Liverpool look to punish an overmatched Swansea side.

Monreal   Mustafi    Koscielny

HOME – Crystal Palace Saturday 20th January 15:00

Last Updated: Thursday 18th January 2018

  • Wenger confirms that they could sell Alexis…or he might just play Saturday for Arsenal. :)
  • Koscielny should be back as well as Monreal and possibly Ozil as well according to Arsene.
  • Maitland-Niles is said to be a bit under the weather, this could give Kolasinac an opportunity to slot back in. Monreal is also an option for the wing-back role with Chambers slotting in the back 3 if the Spaniard is moved further forward. And to be honest who doesn’t want to see Zaha going at Chambers!!
  • With Ramsey back, we could see Jack pushed further up the pitch, with Ozil joining him if fit or Iwobi if the German is not ready.
  • Giroud remains out, but could be back next week, Cazorla remains a long term absentee.

  • Eddie Howe will make wholesale changes to the team that were thumped out of the FA Cup by Wigan in midweek.
  • Josh King and Junior Stanislas are both getting closer to a comeback with Howe saying, ‘we’ll wait and see’ whether they can be involved on Saturday.
  • Tyrone Mings and Jermain Defoe remain out.
  • The Cherries have lost on four of their five visits to West Ham over the years and have won none of their last nine trips to the capital.
  • Callum Wilson has scored three in his last four league matches and has history vs the Hammers as he scored four goals in the last three clashes between the two.

  • Imagine being a Brighton reporter and having to travel to this press conference every single week knowing that the only real quote provided every single bloody time will always and forever be “there are no fresh injury concerns and that Steve ‘is Hughton pulling a Ferris Bueller on us‘ Sidwell is the only absentee.
  • Which you are then somehow expected to embellish into an article, of sorts.
  • Not quite sure what else you want me to add then in all honesty :)
  • Ok, I’ll try. They seem to have, or at least trust, about 12 players.
  • 11 of those will start.
  • Ok, I’ll try harder. Whichever of Izquierdo or March he picks on the left wing, the other will replace him after half-time at some point.
  • Bored much? Care much? Probably not.
  • Brighton lost to Chelsea 2-0 on Boxing Day and will probably do the same this week.

  • The big news is that Tom Heaton has returned to training but isn’t expected to replace Nick Pope for a number of weeks as he is not training with the first team.
  • Stephen Ward and Mark Wood continue to miss out.
  • Having missed last weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace Scott Arfield should be fit to return to the squad.
  • Jon Walters has suffered a setback and has undergone minor knee surgery to trim a cartilage. No timescale has been put on his return.

AWAY – Brighton Saturday 20th January 12:30

Last Updated: Friday 19th January 2018

  • Midweek red cards for Alvaro Morata and Pedro see the pair miss the trip to Brighton. This will likely see Eden Hazard play as a false no.9 given that Conte doesn’t rate Batshuayi and the club have not yet been able to sign Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll fell on his ankle to avoid a move to Stamford Bridge.
  • Gary Cahill is ruled out with a hamstring injury, Andreas Christensen will likely return to the starting line-up after being rested for the last couple of matches.
  • Cesc Fabregas has also been ruled out meaning Conte may be forced to play both Bakayoko and Drinkwatwer. Ross Barkley is fit enough to make the squad but may not be ready to start.
  • The Blues are unbeaten in all competitions since losing at West Ham in early December, though they have drawn their last five. They have at least won the last seven vs Brighton.

  • Joel Ward has been in training for 10 days so he is available and could replace Timothy Fosu-Mensah at right back.
  • Ruben Loftus-Cheek could be set for an extended period on the side-lines as he could require surgery if his ankle injury does not respond to treatment over the next 2-3 weeks.
  • Yohan Cabaye is also available and could return in place of Jairo Riedewald.
  • Having started with Bakary Sako alongside Christian Benteke against Burnley Hodgson is likely to continue with this pairing meaning that Wilfried Zaha will once again start on the right.

HOME – West Brom Saturday 20th January 15:00

Last Updated: Friday 19th January 2018

  • Theo Walcott joined Sam for this week’s press conference but we won’t bore you with what he had to say!
  • Allardyce confirmed that Michael Keane is fit for the weekend and given last weekend’s debacle he is likely to come straight back into the side.
  • Allardyce also confirmed that Seamus Coleman is close to a return.
  • In midfield Morgan Schneiderlin could return in place of James McCarthy.
  • Walcott trained on his own on Thursday but will train with the squad today.
  • Walcott is expected to start from the right. This will see Yannick Bolasie either drop to the bench or replace Sigurdsson on the left.
  • It sounds like there will be a few players on their way out of Goodison with Sam of the opinion that the squad is too big.

  • Stankovic is training again but needs minutes according to Wagner with the u23s. Cranie remains out and Kachunga is a long term injury.
  • Pritchard and Kongolo are in contention for the squad and according to their gaffer possibly even the starting XI.
  • Quaner and Lowe should be back in contention for a start against Stoke after missing out last fixture.
  • After a dreadful performance last time out, don’t be surprised if Wagner makes several changes vs Stoke.

  • “Morgan continues to make progress and improve on the bicycle,” said Puel. “He does not want to become a cyclist, but he is making progress.” that Puel is such a kidder.
  • Huth could be in contention after featuring vs Oldham on Wednesday night.
  • The gaffer also mentioned Silva being close to ready for a start after impressing vs Fleetwood in the FA Cup replay.

  • Alberto Moreno has been training for four or five days but isn’t expected to be ready in time for Monday night.
  • Virgil van Dijk has returned to training following his hamstring injury and should make his first Premier League start for the club.
  • Klavan, Lovren & Salah have been ill this week. Klopp reckons both Klavan & Salah would be back training today or tomorrow.
  • Jordan Henderson is expected to return to normal training tomorrow following a clearing session today but is unlikely to feature on Monday night.

  • Jesus and Foden remain out and Mendy is a long-term absentee.
  • David Silva has been spotted training with the squad, so he should be in line to start.
  • Danilo is the likely replacement for Delph, but this is Pep we are talking about here, so anyone and I do mean anyone could be played there.

  • Ashley Young is available after serving his suspension but will have to dislodge Luke Shaw who has impressed of late – United have kept clean sheets in each of the previous four matches and Mourinho spoke highly of Shaw in his presser. Which probably means Young will play!
  • Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic remain sidelined, while Daley Blind had picked up a knock, if anyone cares. Which they don’t.
  • United are unbeaten in 35 matches that Paul Pogba has started and have lost just once in their last 24 meetings vs Burnley. Pogba has scored four goals and assisted another 10 in his last 14 league matches.
  • The Reds have scored two goals or more in each of their last five league matches on the road, a run that has seen them win four and draw the other.

  • Mike Ashley told Rafa that they would try and do something in the transfer window. I can only assume that by that he means that he will sell some players. Perhaps Joselu to Chelsea.
  • Lejuene is unlikely to feature and Gamez will be out for a while.
  • Mitrovic has been training and could make the 18.
  • Toon played a 5 back vs City last time out and only lost 1-0, so you could see Rafa turn back to that formation and try to frustrate City, this could see Ritchie drop to the bench as he did last time they faced them.

  • Clown! Get out now! And 0-18. Those were just some of the (publishable) views from saints fans on their live periscope feed of Pellegrino’s press conference.
  • Yes, we know we said we wouldn’t bother watching that anymore but it was just sat there morbidly luring us in. We lasted 3 minutes!
  • The press knives are fully out now as he was grilled on relegation to which he had little answer to other than saying he is “looking at taking the team to the next level”… You can make your own Championship jokes up about that.
  • More worrying for Saints fans were his answers on how they planned to stop Spurs and in particular Harry Kane after the recent 5-2 drubbing. He mumbled a few meaningless bits of nonsense and basically left everybody with the impression that he clearly didn’t have any.
  • The team will itself will probably remain largely unchanged after a slightly more encouraging performance last week.
  • Maya Yoshida remains a doubt and Charlie Austin is still out.

  • Paul Lambert turned out to be Stoke’s chosen one. Or at least the only manager who said yes when approached!
  • I doubt any Stoke fans are what could be described as excited by this appointment. After all, the last time he was in the PL he had a win % of just under 30% with Aston Villa.
  • Caretaker coach Eddie Niedzwiecki opted for a 4-2-3-1 last weekend a system which Lambert favours, so expect something similar this weekend.
  • Lambert thinks everyone is ok in terms of injuries. The team had Wednesday off and Lambert said they would have a closer look at them later on Thursday.
  • This suggests that Eric Pieters who missed the United game due to a knock will be available. Should he miss out, Josh Tymon is likely to again fill in.
  • Kostas Stafylidis arrived on-loan from FC Augsburg on Thursday but the Greek international left back is lacking match fitness.
  • Ryan Shawcross and Glen Johnson both trained on Tuesday.
  • Having been side-lined for the best part of two years Stephen Ireland returned to the team against United last weekend and will be hoping that Lambert is true to his word when he says Ireland will get a chance. Lambert left him out of the squad for the second half of 2012-13 campaign due to “footballing reasons”.
  • Jese continues to be unavailable due to personal reasons.
  • Peter Crouch is likely to lead the line although Lambert may opt for Diouf or Berahino if he wants more mobility!

  • Swansea fans will be delighted to hear that new boss Carlos Carvalhal is leaving no stone unturned in pursuit of survival… “I don’t know how many wins we will need, I have not counted, but maybe we must win 50% of the games we have left”.
  • And the new Pardew continued with his nonsense, “I try to give the players that feeling and I have the sensation that they can capture the belief I am giving them”. Liverpool are going to have a field day here.
  • As for injuries then Mike van der Hoorn is back in training having feared a hamstring pull in last weeks game.
  • Renato Sanches should resume training tomorrow but will be hard pressed to find a route straight back into the team.
  • Tammy Abraham is also a maybe but Carvalhal is ‘keeping his fingers crossed’. Yep, that usually works.

  • Pochettino has to choose between Serge Aurier and Kieran Trippier for the right back role.
  • Spurs have won nine of the last eleven meetings between the two and have scored 11 goals in the last 3 clashes. The Boxing Day clash ended 5-2 with Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick, while Dele Alli has scored 5 in 5 vs the Saints.

  • Watford have spoken early. And publicly. Ooooh get them, somebody must have finally had a positive result. Albeit through cheating!
  • Said result was their first point since the 2nd of December, a run which included 7 straight defeats.
  • They may have to look for the next one without Tom Cleverley who came off last week with a hamstring twinge. He will be assessed further today and if he doesn’t make it then Roberto Pereyra will probably slot in unless they decide to switch to a 4-4-2 in which case Yroy Deeney could come in to partner Andre Gray. Gray interestingly said this week that he doesn’t like playing as the lone striker and enjoys having a partner up top.
  • Few other changes are expected elsewhere.

  • Lord Pardew reports that Craig Dawson and Ahmed Hegazi are being monitored after the pair clashed heads last week but the club are confident they will both be ok.
  • There are no other new injuries but Nacer Chadli and James Morrison remain out.

  • Andre Ayew needs a leg issue checking on and Declan Rice has a minor hamstring strain.
  • All of the above is probably rather moot though after last weeks hammering of Huddersfield. Expect the same team or near as dammit.
