FPL Deadline Day Transfers

Welcome to Fantasy Football Deadline Day Transfers. Deadline Day was a strange day to say the least. There we were fully expecting a domino effect of expensive deals with Alexis Sanchez, Philippe Coutinho, Riyad Mahrez and Virgil van Dijk all expecting to leave clubs, while the Diego Costa stand-off may be sorted and there was speculation aplenty with many other names expecting to be cashing a fat signing-on fee. In the end the day fell flat, none of the aforementioned players moved and will feel disappointed at the outcome, though it should be emphasised that the Spanish transfer window remains open until midnight tonight (Friday), so it’s possible that Coutinho, Mahrez and Costa could still technically move.

So, enough of the nearly men, what of the players who did engineer a move. Let’s have a brief look through at those most likely to influence our FPL thinking.

The biggest deal of the day saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain turn down a move to Chelsea in favour of Liverpool for £35mln. Quite where The Ox fits into Klopp’s plans remains to be seen – presumably he has moved with assurances that he will get game time and with the speculation that he doesn’t want to play wing back (the alleged reason he turned down Chelsea), the implication is that he will be fitted somewhere into Liverpool’s midfield – competing with the likes of Henderson, Can, Wijnaldum and Coutinho (assuming he stays!). Priced at 6mln in FPL, The Ox is cheaper than Wijnaldum and more expensive than Can and Henderson and may well prove a decent squad option for Liverpool but for FPL managers it is likely a wait and see as there will surely be plenty of rotation once the Champions League starts in a couple of weeks.

Having missed out on Chamberlain, Chelsea moved to buy Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater. Drinkwater arrives from Leicester and will be competing with Kante, Bakayoko and Fabregas for a spot in the middle of the park, but his FPL standing is limited and he’ll be ignored by most. Zappacosta is a right footed defender and will likely compete with Victor Moses for the right wing back role – the Italian is not dissimilar to Marcos Alonso in his attacking prowess and is thought to be a better crosser than Alonso and will also want to compete with Alonso for some free kicks. His price of 6mln sees him considerably cheaper than Alonso, Azpilicueta, Moses and Cahill and if he can make the RWB place his own he could be a smart way into the Blues defence.

Spurs beefed up their squad with the hires of Serge Aurier and Fernando Llorente. Aurier’s arrival will disappoint Trippier owners – at best Trippier will suffer rotation, at worst he will again play second fiddle on the right side of defence. Aurier is a controversial character, but a better defender than Tripper so one would assume the ex-PSG man will be Poch’s no.1 – his opening price of 6mln seems to suggest so anyway and while Danny Rose remains out, Ben Davies remains the preferred play for a Spurs defender, due to his price, lack of competition at present and impressive attacking stats. Llorente has been brought in to provide cover for Harry Kane and could impact on Kane’s minutes – thus far Pochettino has had little choice but to play Kane for the full 90mins but with Llorente now on board there is the chance that the August-hating striker could be removed early if Spurs are winning comfortably – which we expect them to do now we’re in September.

Llorente’s departure from Swansea was only confirmed once Wilfried Bony had signed to return to the Welshies. Having suffered a miserable time at Man City and Stoke, Bony talks excitedly about being back at the Liberty, where he scored 34 goals in 70 games for the Swans. Sadly for Wilf he will no longer have Siggy to create for him so we wouldn’t rush to buy him quite yet. However his price of 6mln is certainly attractive if he can rediscover his old form and the Swans fixtures are certainly good. Swans manager Paul Clement used his contacts at Bayern to secure the services of Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches on a season long loan. Sanches moved to Munich for 30mln last summer and was thought to be one of Europe’s hottest young properties after an impressive European Championship. However, he struggled to settle and game time proved minimal and Clement moved efficiently to persuade the player to come to Wales for the season. FPL have priced him at 5mln and he’s certainly one to watch – Bayern are keen for him to play, so game time should be no issue and Clement has worked with him before so the hope will be he will settle soon and get his game back on track. The initial concern for FPL managers is that Sanches could impact on Tom Carroll’s starting place – this will need to be monitored, but if Sanches settles quickly and starts well it may well be that finding the extra 0.5 to upgrade Carroll to Renato may well be a smart move.

Crystal Palace finally secured the signing of Mamadou Sakho from Liverpool and having started the season with three straight defeats, the defender will likely be plunged straight into the starting line up as soon as he is 100% fit. However, Palace defenders have proved little value for a while now and we’d certainly recommend a watching brief at best before buying any!

A full list of deadline day deals can be found below. Some may prove to be useful to FPL, while most probably won’t be! Those who definitely won’t make your FPL squads this season are Lucas Pérez, Bojan Krkic, Joel Campbell, Nampalys Mendy and Divock Origi who have all left the Premier League on loan.

    ***NEW ARTICLE***

Thanks to Cookie for casting his eye over some Deadline Day transfers.

It was all rather anti-climactic in the end. Deadline Day that is, not Cookie smile

Thank you for this useful article.

What are everyone’s thoughts on the security of Trippier’s position (currently with injuries) now that Serge Aurier has moved from PSG to Tottenham?

Would investment in another defender of a cost around £5.4 be advised? My thoughts are towards Jones. I much prefer Spurs fixtures though.

      Kop Warrior says:

      CML,

I don’t think Aurier has featured for PSG this season and I’m not sure what kind of a pre-season he’s had in terms of preparation. So If Trippier can shake off the knock ahead of the Everton game I’d expect him to start but once Aurier is match fit I expect him to be first choice.

      The B says:

Rotation can always be expected between Trip and Aurier when both are fit, Davies seems like the best choice for now. Should not be bothered by 0.2M when it avoids the rotation threat, because that is absolutely the worst!

Early thoughts what to do here. Had a shocking start. I have two free transfers and midfield is clearly a problem

      dadinho says:

Jesus for Firmino and ince for Pogba or Mikhi

      • Smash10 says:

Thanks dadinho. Prob makes sense just feel KDB prob needs to go ahead or Jesus

        • dadinho says:

Pep will not stick to both of them to start the game so although he prefers jesus i think rotation is becoming a risk with him.
KDB needs to go as well but you giving him time to give you some pts before shipping him out.
Otherwise i agree KDB and ince or ramsey out and get Miki and Ali

      Pancho says:

Hey Smash, I think a Pool mid is a necessity! KDB -> Salah and Ramsey -> Pogba work? If not then maybe Keep Ramsey and risk it? Or take a -4 and get Mooy in for Ince to fund it.

      • Smash10 says:

Thanks Pancho. 0.3 short but yeah I’m pretty certain I’d be getting Salah in. Considering Coutinho as well

        • dadinho says:

i had him to start then he got benched and i WC smile and now i want him as well but i think he will be rested a lot due to his explosives nature it pains me to not have him but when i get pool coverage i will be looking at Mane or Firmino.

        • Smash10 says:

They all seem decent options I can see Liverpool scoring a lot of goals. I thought City would have scored a lot more

    • 3.3
      The B says:

KDB > Salah seems necessary here as I dont see KDB firing, and you definitely need Liverpool cover.

      inittowinit says:

Hi Smash, I’d probably lose KDB to Salah (or Mane) and Jesus to Firmino. I’d suggest Morata too but Firmino saves you more pennies and I’d be looking at these 2 moves in terms of what bank they can generate to turn Rambo / Ince into upgrades. If you did those what would be left for an Ince / Rambo replacement?

      • Smash10 says:

Yeah I was really paranoid about City cover now I think they are all risks. I can do Firmino, Salah and Pogba for Ince, KDB and Jesus. Or if I’m clever with price rises/drops Vardy, Coutinho and Salah. Or Firmino, Salah and Alli that gets rid of Rambo. Or lastly Firmino, Salah and Pogba. I have watched Huddersfield play twice and Ince has looked terrible but not sure if Rambo keeps his place.

        • inittowinit says:

To be honest, whichever way you cut those combos they all sound like great options really don’t they. Ince hasn’t looked great but yeah at least he’ll play. Rambo probably should but who knows what will Wenger will do next. Not least him right now.

        • Smash10 says:

Yeah they all sound better. Ideally I want to do a -12 to get rid of whole midfield but I won’t do that. I’ll take a -4 and do 3 transfers

        • inittowinit says:

Yeah I’d do that. You can still transform the whole lot in about 3 weeks.

    Pancho says:

Hey all, I would wholeheartedly agree with the underwhelming nature of deadline day. All in all, though, an interesting window. Fun to have some great new options in FPL. A few questions I’m pondering:
    1. Will we get a firing Sanchez for Arsenal from now until January?
    2. Will Hazard hit the ground running after the break?
    3. Why didn’t anyone buy Mahrez? H s surely worth more than the Ox?! Will he push past his frustration and keep his early season form going?
    4. Who is wildcarding now?
    Cheers all!

      dadinho says:

1-No although he is hardcore he feels hard done by and even if not in purpose his perf level will drop.
2- He scored and played which surprised me more than anything. Yes but he is a H performer
3- Very weird, Arsenal rejected him to be rejected by Lemar. Asking price! will have his days FPL wise
      4- Done and dusted smile

      • Pancho says:

Dadinho, I would disagree on Mahrez’s asking price. The highest bid that came in was £32m and Ox went for £35m+ I would heartily disagree with the assertion that Ox is worth more. If Coutinho is worth £115m+ then Mahrez is surely worth £50m right?!?!

        • Smash10 says:

I agree Pancho I’m surprised no one came in for Mahrez. Did not think they were asking for that much in comparison to the likes of Ox

        • dadinho says:

I agree with the crazy market today he was PFA player of the year so def we agree but maybe the asking price taking in consideration that you are comparing to english player who are notoriously over priced (Raheem and stones 50 a piece was a joke before inflated markets).
But commercially speaking i am guessing they look at it as he wont sell shirt i dont know, not agreeing with their rational just trying to find one. United, Arsenal, even spurs could have used him and paid the price. He deserved better it goes to show that luck and timing play a big part. Imagine the Atleti ban not being upheld and Griezman going to United and the whole summer would have been different.

        • Pancho says:

Agreed Dadinho! I wish Spurs would have grabbed him! A front 4 of Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Mahrez would have been deadly!

    • 4.2
      The B says:

I am not wildcarding yet. I am satisfied with my defenders and strikers. Currently we have just identified good scoring mids. Strikers are still uncertain, and defence heavily depends on fixtures. Need more clarity on strikers before I wild card. Cant just throw out Kane on wild card, and find him scoring again, making it impossible to fit him back. Gotta wait a bit on that one, because Spurs have a nice run of fixtures.

    Matt says:

Afternoon fellas, cheers for this Cookie.

I seen on the GABO article that Renato Sanches might not be that great for us in FF terms. As soon as I seen he made that move I was instantly thinking of a rotation between him and Brady instead of Carroll. Do people think Sanches would be the better player to have in a rotation or just stick with Carroll? Only thing I’m not too sure about now is whether Carroll will stay on set pieces or will Sanches take over? With Bony back as the man up top I expect Swansea to score a lot more headers and goals. Is it safer to even go with Bony up top as a cheap forward?

    • 5.1
      DMC says:

      Hi Matt
I’d say, for both, wait and see.

      • Matt says:

Hey DMC, how are you mate? That’s what I was thinking as well.

Some Portuguese lads made the switch to EPL this summer any to keep an eye on?

        • DMC says:

Cheers Matt – you mean the whole summer or just the deadline day? ?
Well, whatever your answer is, I’d put Bernardo Silva ahead of any others. FPL wise he’s a rotation risk of course so I’m not advising purchasing him, for now anyway.
Renato may recover his best form, but, again, I’m not seeing too much FPL value, unless he does take over set piece duties. I see what Smash is about in terms of playing further up the pitch and while I agree he won’t be limited to defensive midfield duties (he wasn’t in the Euro’s) I’m also not convinced by his creative abilities so yeah a few free kicks, the odd shot from distance, maybe a rebound ( smile ) may get him a goal or two but 5.0 for a possible consistent 2 pointer? I don’t know. Wait and see.
Then you have two wing backs heading to Watford and Brighton, both from my team, Sporting. These guys are not Portuguese though, they’re Dutch (Zeegelaar) and Italian-Argentine (Schelotto). They have the same abilities (good-ish going forward) and weaknesses (they can’t really defend …). They have both been priced at £4.5 so yeah, maybe watch the Watford one, given that he plays for the better team.
Adrien Silva is still to be confirmed but I have already discussed him in the previous article.
          Anyone else I’m missing?

        • Matt says:

Yeah those were the guys I was thinking of I just knew they were from Sporting didn’t even think of looking up their nationalities haha.

I was interested in that Zeegelaar lad as he does get a good few assists and with Gray and Deeney up top could be a nice option but at 4.5 mil I think there are better options out there right now, until he proves himself that is!!

Can the Adrien Silva move still go through? I know there is some sort of way for it to go through but a part from a loan deal I don’t know what that is.

    • 5.2
      Smash10 says:

I think Sanches could be a bargain. He’s going to be their best player so I’d expect everything to go through him. I think he might play even more forward than we are used to. However DMC would know a lot more than me

    • 5.3
      The B says:

Not ready to back a midfielder based on just talk. He does not have the attacking numbers with him in his previous seasons, but yeah, he is young, and that might change at Swansea. Carroll is still taking set pieces and Ill always back a cheap midfielder with set pieces in his locker.

  6. 6
    The B says:

Any thoughts on the following team guys? Have 2FTs.

Want to do KDB > Alli/Eriksen considering Spurs’ favourable fixtures. Will have 7.4M budget to replace Ramsey. Who is the best replacement? Brunt, Willian, Jese, Phillips? All low scoring mids, might as well hold on to Ramsey if he is expected to play GW4.
