Grab, Avoid or Bore Off! – Fantasy Premier League 2018-19

International break time can only mean one thing, it is ‘Bore off’ time. The old guard is back in place for this one.

Thanks to Cookie, Init and Kop for once again jumping on here and providing some answers to some of the questions that many have on their mind and some questions that apparently only I would have on my mind. What are the fellas thinking about Kun’s minutes, Salah’s form and Giroud’s looks all that and much more…

Ok, let’s get it on!

Really great article guys. Thanks for that.

Would appreciate any advice on this WC team.
£0.5M itb, which could upgrade Hojbjerg to Kenedy, or Knockaert to Fraser, or be kept for contingencies.

Interesting yet good take on the approach Chips. First impression was ‘where’s all the premium defenders, but on second take I guess what you have there is a raft of basically the one level down ones, if you get my drift. No pun intended. I suppose the pay off between what you have and the more common theme of Mendy, Robbo and Alonso etc is probably one more premium mid. Probably in the shape of Sterling although I appreciate that’s a Kun compromise. Only other thing I’d maybe look at is your keeper options for GW’s 11 and 12. Having Doherty already may be enough to look at a different keeper.

      • Chipster says:

Thanks for the comments Init. Yes, Sterling is partly a Kun compromise and partly a KDB placeholder, but I could only fit him in by compromising on premium defenders, as you’ve identified. My other option is to use Mane as a KDB placeholder, but that would leave me no City until KDB is back – is that too risky you think?

Nice point about the keeper options, but given Patricio only conceded 1 goal each to both Manchester teams, I’m not overly worried about the upcoming Spurs and Arsenal fixtures. I’m not expecting a CS, but nor am I expecting a drubbing. But it does raise the option of using the £0.5M itb to upgrade Button to a second playing keeper (Ryan?) which is tempting.

If I do Mane instead of Sterling, and Ryan instead of Button, I can upgrade Dunk to Luiz and have £0.1M change. Mane > KDB (or indeed Salah > KDB) is then an easy swap down the line.

        • inittowinit says:

Sounds like a decent compromise but either could work really, just giving you food for thought, aka headaches smile

        • Kralin says:

I may be wrong Chips but I think you play 5 at the back. The Defensive Domain. If you’re persisting with that, why not have two Liverpool defenders – Robertson and Trent Alexander-Alekhine?

I’ve a notion to do that myself as I’m dithering over Salah.

        • Chipster says:

Thanks Kralin. Haha, the Defensive Domain 🙂
Yes, I have been playing 5 at the back recently, though more through necessity than desire (Messrs Ralls, Cairney and Hojbjerg in midfield rather forcing my hand there). I always jntended rebalancing with my WC, but worry I may have downgraded my defence a bit too much, given Init’s comment.

Your idea of double Pool defence crossed my mind and.I did manage a draft with KDB instead of Sterling and Robbo instead of Dunk. I suppose I could run with Siggy in the KDB slot and hold the cash to upgrade to KDB when he’s back.

          Lots to ponder…

How are you getting on with your own WC team Kralin?

        • Zed Leppelin says:

I think I’d just stick with Sterling as the KDB place holder instead of Mane, just not quite fancy doubling up with Mane and Salah even though the fixtures are great but it’s still risky, Liverpool have had problems slicing up deep lying defenses before… Sterling is in good form too!

        • Zed Leppelin says:

KDB could be back soon though, so I like the idea of having a cheaper placeholder too if it afford Robertson for you! I like the idea of having at least one 6m def so you can switch it around, do the hokey-cokey, to Mendy and back again, whatever you fancy! Just think Robertson would be great for the foreseeable!

        • Chipster says:

Thanks for the feedback Zed. I prefer Sterling to Mane as well if I’m honest, plus I think Sterling could be a good differential (even if only until KDB returns). I do also like the idea of getting Robbo in and doubling on the Pool defence. But I can’t have everything, lol, so will have to keeping thinking and tinkering (or should that be ‘thinkering’!) 😀

        • Zed Leppelin says:

“Thinkering” – that’s the only word that really describes playing FPL!! 😀

        • Kralin says:

Evening Chips. My own wildcard is just a case of shuffling the pieces around at the moment. Am pondering the Salah Situation and wondering if I should enter the Mane Minefield.

Otherwise thinking about whether to continue with Mendy, Alonso and Robertson; all that sort of thing. Have decided not to think about KdB just yet.

        • Zed Leppelin says:

Have you already entered the Hazard Heaven?

        • Kralin says:

Entered the Hazard Harem, more like. Yes, last week and for fairly obvious reasons he’s staying.

      AK47 says:

I would get Mane for Salah then look at getting 1 premium fullback, either Robertson or Alonso.

      • Chipster says:

Thanks AK. That does make a lot of sense actually, but I feel sods law will prevail and Salah will score big if I drop him for Hudders and Cardiff. If he blanks, then I may downgrade to Mane afterwards and possibly use the cash for a premium defender like you suggest (especially if my mid-price/bargain defence has not performed as hoped by then).

      Chipster says:

I like it. Any money left over to play with? My thoughts are:
      1. Fab > £4.0M (e.g. Button). Or if you want two playing keepers, consider Ryan.
      2. Any cash to upgrade Bennett to Doherty?
      3. Mixed fixtures ahead for Rich. Could downgrade to Fraser/Knockeart and upgrade Murray to Arnie/Mitro.

      • secretzorro says:

Sorry Chips, but I’m not sure. Int break is a bugger, I really think he can roll with what he has. Longer term your plan is great, but slowly slowly is better imo.

        • Chipster says:

Fair point SZ. I agree there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with that squad. My suggestions were just tinkering suggestions seeing as how it was a wildcard draft.

        • secretzorro says:

I can see your side too chips, no right or wrong on this one.

      • Mr Go says:

No money left over, possible plans for the future would be to take out Starling for KDB and then look to use the money saved to upgrade a few players.

    • 12.3
      Kralin says:

I think I’d have T A-A or Robertson instead of Lovren. Liverpool will (most likely) be having to bypass a few buses in the coming weeks and they will have their part to play in that.

      • Mr Go says:

Not sure I can afford TAA or Robertson.

        • Kralin says:

You could downgrade a goalie perhaps. Speroni may yet drop to 3.9. But there are plenty of 4 goalies out there.

        • Mr Go says:

I was looking to rotate keepers, is Patricio good enough to set as my GK?

        • Chipster says:

I’ve only had Patricio and a non-playing 4.0 keeper all season and am planning on sticking with that.

Rui does have a couple of tricky fixtures in GWs 11 & 12, but he has already coped admirably against City (1 goal conceded), so I am keeping the faith 🙂

        • Mr Go says:

          Cheers, something to think about!

        • Zed Leppelin says:

Agree with what Chips said! Have Patricio and Hamer and had since the start and thus far it has been amazing! Patricio is good for bonus as well, and he has great save potential against the big dogs… Only 2 points behind the highest scoring goalie Ederson thus far! I see no reason to change that or start a rotation as rotation would be more expensive and it’s tough to always make the right call, you tend to play the home keeper or with the easiest fixture and research shows surprising results happen often enough to make that a rather bad strategy imo!
