Grab, Avoid or Bore Off! – Fantasy Premier League 2018-19

Oh yeah, with FPL back that also means ‘Bore off’ returns. I have went back to that old well and gathered the 3 amigos up for you to get their thoughts on some of the questions that we all want answered as the season draws closer.

For those that don’t know them or don’t know them well, let me introduce you to them.

Init is one of our site owners, he enjoys being a disciplinarian, hates typos and those with a lack of attention to detail. He also would prefer to not take walks on the beach and is not fond of puppies. Other than that, he is a great guy.

Cookie is also a site owner. He lives in Monaco, enjoys laying on the beach and taking pictures while he drinks his wine. He doesn’t like to hear about the details and enjoys typos.

Kop also a site owner and overall grouch, might be last on this list, but he is certainly not least, in particular in the grumpy category. If you ever need a pick me up, look somewhere else!!

Ok, enough of the heartfelt intros, let’s get it on!

This is my first draft hows it shaping up?

Don’t see a glaring problem with it, I assume Lovren won’t start right away, but my guess is that you know that and still feel he is worth having until he slots back in. For 5.0 he is not an expensive stash until he gets back. Firmino and Salah have joined up with the team so they should be good to go, haven’t seen much on Kun, but it’s not like he played much at the WC so he should be good. Defenders look solid, Midfield has talent and you have a nice attack, Quaner will chip in occasionally not that you will need him often if ever. Douglas is good cover for Lovren until he gets back.

      Like it!

      Kralin says:

I wouldn’t have a 5m defender on the bench. I appreciate you need cover for Lovren but you won’t once he’s back. There are some very nice 4.5m defenders around and possibly even a 4m defender – Peltier – who will free up some money for you.

So Douglas to Peltier and Lovren to Robertson? Gives your side some nice attacking chops from GW1.

Otherwise I’ve droned on lengthily about avoiding Arsenal’s early fixtures, with the likes of Siggy or Martial maybe holding the fort.

      Kralin says:

Also try to go for a 4m goalie with low ownership. Speroni has quite high ownership and when he doesn’t start could get moved out of a few sides and lose value.

I’ve gone for the injured Everton dude for now.

      • @Kralin, don’t price drops and increases occur based on their ownership percentages? I feel like I had this discussion in the past before. Think it would require a lot more Speronis sold than Stekelenburgs for a Speroni to get a price drop. smile

Could be wrong, but this conversation feels very familiar.

        • Kralin says:

I may have well got it wrong, probably have, but I was under the vague understanding that Speroni, currently on nearly 14% ownership, is more vulnerable to a price drop to Stekelenburg.

People buying the latter surely know Pickford will start and so have got him (Stek) for tactical reasons, and won’t sell; people buying Speroni may be under the illusion he will start, then may desert him en masse and cause a price drop.

But I may have missed your point and in fact Speroni is the wiser buy – please correct me if I’m wrong.

        • Speroni has a nice beard.

        • Kralin says:

What sense of the word ‘beard’ do you mean?

        • Facial hair, not the other stuff smile

Only because of the City depth, but I am having a hard time feeling City are much better than LFC.

    Alisson vs Ederson
Think that is fairly close, I want to say Alisson edges it just based on national team, but let us call that even.

    Mendy vs Robertson
Hard to say how Mendy will perform, although he has already won the PL. smile I give this to Robertson though, we know what he can do and it is pretty damn good. Advantage LFC

    VvD vs Otamendi
VvD transformed Liverpool and I have a tough time picking any CB over VvD. Advantage LFC

    Lovren vs Stones/Kompany/LaPorte/Otamendi
Whoever the other starter is with the exception of possibly Otamendi, I pick them over Lovren. Advantage City

    Walker vs TAA
Definitely Walker for me on this one. Advantage City

    Fernandinho vs Fabinho
Many will disagree, but I prefer Fabinho. One is 24 the other is 33 and in a position that requires so much running that will start to show. Fabinho should have went with Brazil to the world cup over Fernandinho in my opinion. When Brazil lost to Belgium, I thought immediately of him and how he could have done the job left by the suspended Casemiro. Advantage LFC

KdB vs Hendo or whoever, does it matter?
    Advantage City smile

    Silva vs Keita
Silva is proven and even though he is getting older, it be hard to go against him here. However, once people see Keita play, think this will be a lot closer than some might think, assuming Keita isn’t suspended too often. Advantage City

    Sane vs Mane
Both have their moments, I really can’t call this one, I really like Sane as a player, but I am not sure he is necessarily better than Mane. Call it even.

    Kun/Jesus vs Firmino
I love Firmino, just think he is really good and in particular really good at interpreting what Klopp wants and LFC need. Aguero is proven and Jesus is a nice player. I think Firmino offers more to the team and if I had to pick one for my own team, that is who I take. Advantage LFC

    Salah vs Sterling/Mahrez/B. Silva
Doesn’t really matter who it is, much like KdB, this is an easy pick. Advantage LFC

Depth goes to City, but I feel the starting XI for Liverpool is better. I know some/many will dispute CDM and Striker being advantages for LFC, but I think most South Americans feel the same way about these players.
    Fabinho>Fernandinho
    Firmino>Aguero or Jesus

      Mr Bean says:

If Fabinho really is better than Fernandinho, then i’m calling that signing of the summer because Fernandinho has been absolutely incredible for City over the last 2/3 seasons – the unsung hero. Reminds me of my old centre-mid partner at school, who must have run a marathon every game, to make up for my lack of defensive abilities/willingness.

I think Mendy > Robertson on the first few games of last year (though i’m a huge fan of Robertson) and I think Firminio vs Aguero is too hard to call – Firminio is exactly what Liverpool need from a front man while Aguero is exactly what City need from a front man, and I dont think you could split the two.

Regardless of which side of the fence you sit, their games this season should be incredible.

      • Mendy could be better than Robertson, but he will have to be very good to outdo Robertson based on last season. I also think that him not starting in the WC means he is not exactly completely back. Hernandez is a decent player but he barely played more than Mendy last season and he basically got all the minutes in the WC over him. This could also mean that Mendy might be rotated a bit more.

I think Kun is exactly what most people want in a striker, I don’t think he is what Pep wants. I think Jesus is what Pep wants, but the Brazilian doesn’t put away the chances like Kun. I think there might be a problem there that will eventually surface.

      • MBD says:

Don’t see Fab being better than Fern despite Mito’s argument. One is now an EPL vetran and another untested in the EPL. For all we know he will have a bakayoko-ish season. Maybe 19/20 season.

    • 56.3

I have the same feeling Mito so I have invested some of my World Cup winnings on Liverpool for the league at 5/1.

I do think this is the strongest I have seen Liverpool in my life time.

      Nice article 😉

      AnttL says:

C’mon mate. Fabinho is nowhere near the level of Fernandinho.

      • He definitely is on par with him at the very least. I think the decision to not take Fabinho to the WC cup ends up costing Brazil the WC. Obviously if Casemiro doesn’t get suspended that decision doesn’t matter, but if Fabinho was there, think Brazil would have beat Belgium, they should have anyway.

I am not alone in my opinion on those two. Now, I am talking from a national team point of view and maybe that is my mistake. Also a Madrid bias might come into play. When I think of who could replace Casemiro for Brazil only Fabinho comes to mind.

This next tweet is just an opinion and I am sure there are people who feel differently, but I completely agree.

        • DMC says:

I like this discussion but we’re being unfair to Fernandinho. You see, he was never a DMC untill he landed at city. He works better as MC (n.8) so he was never going to replace Casemiro properly. He needs Pep’s possession play to work as a DCM. Fabinho is an unknown quantity in EPL but other than that he’s a great deal for Liverpool. Not so much FPL wise.

        • In part because of the role they are asked to do, is why I think Fabinho edges him. One is going to be asked to do what he is really good at doing, the other will be asked to do something he does well, but it is not his best spot. Take both players and put them at West Ham, who would you rather have playing the CDM role?

Plus there is that whole age thing. I don’t think it was a coincidence that they were so upset at that whole Jorginho saga.

      Mitro says:

      mito,

You are pretty much spot on with most but IMO there is no way firmino is better than kun! Kun is a world class striker…. firmino is no way near! Doesn’t Jesus keep firmino out of the Brazilian squad?

      • Yep and how did keeping Firmino out work out for them? smile It was glaringly obvious when Firmino came in he was the better player. Love to see Tite explain why he insisted with Jesus. Think it was one of those things where if ain’t broke don’t fix it, since they were winning.

This is the same as the CDM argument, for what they are needed, who fits in better Firmino or Aguero and therefore ends up providing more for his team? I am not making the argument of who is better, although I could easily argue that Firmino would be my choice based on him being 4 years younger and his willingness to sacrifice for the team, I am making the argument that he fits the current team that he is on better.

Don’t be shocked if an offer for Kun comes in from Madrid. sad I rather they get Firmino.

        • secretzorro says:

Are we talking fantasy or reality? I think Firmino is critical for the pluds and brings the best out of Mane/Salah , whereas Jesus/Kun can be rotated and they have a bucket load of mids to play with too…. So in reality it’s Bobby everyday for me. Firmino seems ‘ego’ free as well & always puts in a shift. Scally’s must love him to bits.

    Mr Bean says:

Don’t suppose anybody here has watched any of Wolves pre-season? 😀

Hard to judge with Douglas on the sidelines for the time being but, from the match reports, Doherty seems to have been involved in almost everything attacking wise so far and for £4.5m, it seems like a steal.

Howdy hombres! It’s been a long time since I posted here having moved around a lot these last couple of years – but I’m exceedingly pleased to see all the regulars keeping up their sterling work and huge thanks to the admins for keeping the site going. I’ve been agonisingly pipped to first place in my work mini league two seasons running (holding top spot for most of the season and dropping to third/fourth in the last few gws). Determined to do things differently this year!

What are people’s feelings towards Pogba, Mhiki, Kane and Salah this season?

Btw – my extremely work in progress team is attached. Super grateful for any comments/suggestion!

I suspect that Maguire and Lovren won’t play in GW1 possibly even 2. Zaha is said to have turned in a transfer request, not sure how true that is, but in their last friendly I thought I remembered reading in the match report that Zaha was out for some reason (don’t remember what it was) but do remember being suspicious about it. I assume Wilson will start, but he is always tricky.

      • slowdanceswithsnails says:

Thanks for the reply good sir! Really appreciated.

That’s a fair point about Maguire and Lovren. I have a good feeling about ‘slab’ this year can see his confidence being sky high after the WC. Lovren always seems to be high on confidence despite not necessarily putting in performances to back it up; but at 5mil and with Allison coming in can see some Liverpool clean sheets (hold my breath on that one!) But yes you’re right about them not necessarily being starters to begin with. Is there anyone in particular you’re considering for first couple of GWs around a similar price or cheaper who I might think about bringing in to replace with Lovren and Slab once they start playing again?

Thanks for the Zaha tip, too! That has changed my thinking a bit. And Wilson yes, I’m not too sure about him but his early fixtures look OKAY. Not that you can really count on him. It was interesting reading the suggestion here on ff247 about Florin Andone…

        • I don’t know about Andone to really comment on him, but I am sure Fly has looked into him enough to feel he was worthy of one. I will try and track him in pre-season a bit. I think if you want Lovren and Maguire, you could contemplate keeping one even if it means benching them for a week or two. Perhaps you could buy Shaw who is likely to start for a week or two based on Jose’s comments and then move him for Lovren or Maguire if it looks like Shaw is fixing to be dropped once Young is available again. You could always drop Ryan to a 4.0 keeper since you will basically start Ederson every week and save .5, make a 5.0 guy into a 4.5 defender and save another .5 and turn Lovren into Robertson. Just another option there.
