Stats, Stats and Some More Stats

fantasy-football-memeAs some of you know, I moved to the US last year from the UK. As an FPL enthusiast of many a year, one of the first things I noticed was just how huge the fantasy sports industry is over here. There are several fantasy sports programs on TV and there are regular sports programs (on the main sports channels) with sections dedicated solely to the fantasy side of the game. Imagine Gary Lineker taking 15 minutes out of Match of the day to talk about the players you should bring into your fantasy teams for the following week.
Another thing that grabbed my attention was just how into statistics Americans are when it comes to their sports, and fantasy sports in particular. American Football, Baseball, Basketball, it doesn’t matter.

Two of my favourite things in life are ‘Sports’ and ‘Spreadsheets filled with sports data’. I was in heaven, and I needed to be part of things. I signed up into a friend’s American fantasy football league, despite the fact I had no idea what I was doing. I relied on researching the data from the previous season to guide my team selection. One of the first articles I came across was a piece titled “100 Fantasy Facts”, written by one of the most recognized of fantasy experts over here, ESPN’s Matthew Berry. It did exactly what it said on the tin. It was a long list of factual snippets, to help readers decide who to recruit for their fantasy teams. I loved the format and always thought it would make an interesting option for a FPL article.

And so here we are. My tribute to a much more established and knowledgeable fantasy writer than I will ever be. And my attempt to bring you, the FF247 community, some of those trends and quirks within FPL stats that might have passed you by. I wondered if I could get to 247 facts, but that was too ambitious. 100 facts seemed to boring. So the only logical conclusion was to stop at 133. Well, why not?

My disclaimer: Facts can be found to support almost any argument. I haven’t gone into this to talk up (or talk down) any particular player. Instead, I’ve cut the data from last season (and in some cases the last few seasons) many different ways and made observations along the way. Ignore what you want. Use what you want. Just remember, you can’t argue with the facts. You just can’t. That’s why they’re called ‘Facts’.
I hope you enjoy it.

RMT, I think I am taking a few chances with Yaya and Ibe

Evening all. Rate my Tripe please! 😉

@Mad Looks like a very nicely built team. You probably know what I and others are going to point out, I bet. I probably wouldn’t start with him if he hasn’t even moved clubs yet. It is getting late and even though Ade knows Sherwood, it is getting harder and harder for him to start as the days go by.

    DMC says:

Love stats Chins; love form better, but where in doubt, stats are great.
One stat I’d like to know about is the ‘points per £ ratio’ between GK/DEF/MID/FWD
It seems to me that aside from the big hitters that ratio favours a let’s say 5.5/6.0 defender over a 7.5-9.0 Mid or Forward.
For instance, Jags (5.5; 142 pts) outscored the likes of Mata, Yaya Touré, Oscar, Ramsey, Di María, Ozil, Lukaku, Rooney, Benteke, Giroud (all +8.5.
Any ‘last 3 seasons’ stats on that?
The point being it’s more likely to get more points from 5.5/6.0 defenders than from 7.5-9.0 mids or fwds (let alone 5.5/6.0 mids or fwds).
Confused? Well me too but I blame it on the lack of oranges! smile
    Cheers

Well, not more likely but certainly can happen!

      Tekno-kun says:

Is playing minutes taken into consideration there, DMC? There’s generally less rotation in defense, no?

      • DMC says:

Not taken In consideration tekno. No research done here other than look at last season’s total points per position but it suggests that the said ratio favours investing In defense.
It seems you get more pts from let’s say four 5.5 defenders than from three 9.0 mids + one 4.5 mid….for £ 9.5 less.

        • Part of the problem with PPM is that the lower price is a big advantage in that. We would have to look at other measures to even things out. So if you look at the top 20 PPM mids, you will find 16 of the top 20 with a price of 5.5 or lower. Also if you look at all the mids, a player like Haz who was as close to an essential mid as you can get would not even land in the top 10 in the PPM ranking. I get your point though and it has crossed my mind also. In particular in the case of defenders like Iva and similar. Although I know you were talking about cheaper options, It has crossed my mind to pretend that Iva is another mid and just play 4 in the back.

      chins says:

Ha!! Okaaaaay DMC. Give me a few stat free days mate, and i might have a look into that for you. smile
The tricky thing though is that players prices change over the season. What price would you base the analysis on?

      • DMC says:

Chins mate and a well deserved rest! Those stats you worked for us must have been immense work and very appreciated mate.
I’m looking for stats that corroborate (or deny) the general idea that 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formations are better than any other with 4 or 5 defenders.
Personally, I believe it’s more likely to get a CS from a 5.5/6.0 defender than a goal/assist from a same value or superior value mid/fwd.
I gave the examples above for the 7.5/9.0 range just to highlight the issue but in fairness the question would be, is it better to invest in defence with top teams 5.5-7.0 defenders, and thus not being able to feature too many mids/fwd above 8.0, or is it better to use 4/5 +8 mids/fwd with cheap defenders?
What does the ‘points-per-£’ tell us for let’s say last season’s top 20 in each position?

  4. 10
    MadHatter says:

Top score for a def ranging 5.5-6.0 from top 30 is 142 with an average of 4.73 – Top score for a mid ranging between 7.5-9.0 from top 30 is 168 with an average of 5.6

RMT Think I am finally going mad, maybe need to take some time out for a few days

I like the rotation with Goal Keeper and defender Sou & Lei
I think Yaya will do well again this year
Taking a chance with Ibe, if he does not play then fall back to Wanyama
Going for the top forwards with a good low value forward in Ulloa

    Schmeichel
    Azpilicueta, Konchesky, Mertesacker
    Yaya Touré, Hazard, Cazorla, Ibe
    Ulloa, Costa, Rooney

    Fabianski, Wanyama, Cédric, Baker

      Hi Dazza,

    Rick Grimes says:

Huge effort that. Made a couple of changes to my side on the basis of those defender stats. If possible could I get a RMT?

    Mingolet (Speroni)
    Kos / PVA / Williams / Wisdom / Huth
    Hazard / Walcott / Ozil / Mane / Milner
    Lukaku / Sakho / Wilson

Note: 1.5 in the bank to go to Kane from 2nd week. My plan is to wild card early to get Aguero in, probably from game week 4. I’ve deliberately gone no Chelsea defense, just don’t see the vlue early on.
