World Cup 1st Group Phase Live Match Chat

Welcome to World Cup 1st Group Phase Live Match Chat. The long four year wait is over and so is the tinkering for the first set of matches. We hope that you are happy with the 15 players you ended up with, but even if you decided against playing the fantasy version we still encourage you to partake in the chat below. We are sure there will be plenty to discuss that doesn’t always involve whether you should get assist points for a shot that was blocked or your striker really did touch the ball a la Kane before it went in. Predictor games, brackets, bets on the golden boot are all welcomed here. And yeah, even old school footy chat for those that who are just watching the games for fun and just want to talk about the Joga Bonito.

So that you have them to hand, we will post a screenshot of the substitution rules, transfer allotment, wildcard, boosters and of course we will have times and dates for all matches in this, the first of three group phases/rounds/fixtures or whatever you want to call it.

    Morning all,
Captain dilemmas today. I have Werner, Couthino and Kimmich playing today. I’m learning towards Werner…… thoughts?

      DMC says:

Morning Goldilocks – I think Switzerland will frustrate Brazil more than Mexico will Germany and on that basis I’d plant it on Werner. I don’t think Mexico scores so Kimmich could be a 12 pointer banker of course, but going for a defender with those other two available seems wrong, especially if you have good alternatives for the remaining days.

What are people’s thoughts on Cueva …he’s got France next and looked like the penalty miss hit him hard! Should I be planning to move him out…if so who else is a good option at £6M

      Smash10 says:

He looked good but mainly because I don’t see great alternatives

      inittowinit says:

Same dilemma but other than the pen he looked very lively. That plus a lack of real alternatives means I’ll probably just keep him. I’d consider Golovin if I had the spare half a mil.

      DMC says:

I look at this as a combo involving Ronnie. Unthinkable he’s essential now so one from Griz, Luk and Werner will make way for him. This however means one or two downgrades will be needed and I’ll happily buy a non playing 4.5 for Cueva to raise funds. It’s not only his debacle after missing; it’s also that Peru don’t look like a team capable of beating/scoring vs France or Autralia tbh.

      RedKev says:

Cheers all, agree I thought he looked decent and was involved a lot but also agree that goals won’t come easy in his next couple of fixtures!
Can see why you’d plan for Ronnie DMC but my top forward is £10m so would take a few moves for me …transfers don’t carry either right!?….I’ll have to look at him for the knockout stages!
Innit …so gutted I dropped Golovin from my first draft and would like him …how about Cheryshev?
Other alternatives are Meza, Vecino, Koke, K.Honda, Casimero etc but dunno if worth it, none are exciting me yet

    Morning
    Capt dilemma
Jesus, Coutino. Marcelo, or Kimmich ?
Already flopped with armband with Isco & Mbappe.
Btw who takes penalties for Brazil?

    Smash10 says:

    Jesus or Muller for captain?

    wolf pack says:

Thanks; may do Jesus. If he fails it will be meunier and finally cuadrado to step in. What a game 😉

      EPL vs MLS
      Urena-LAFC
      Calvo-Minnesota
      Guzman-Portland
      😆

      • IvanTheTerrible says:

Mitrovic- 14 goals in the last 18 games for Serbia.
Tadic- 7 assists, two less than Kimmich.
        C’mon captain Mitro
        :biggun:

          I have Kloarov smile

        • IvanTheTerrible says:

          I went for Ivanovic 🙁

        • secretzorro says:

          Still a cleanie tho’

        • secretzorro says:

Serbia ought really to have won by more – Mitrovic missed two brilliant chances. says The Guardian. Sigh………

        • IvanTheTerrible says:

          Shame about the yellow.
CRC played rugby but managed to get away with no red.

        • IvanTheTerrible says:

Savic was really impressive. Mourinho must get him.
          60 touches
          38 passes
          4 clearances
          4 aerial duels won
          4 take-ons
          3 chances created
          2 through balls
          2 tackles
          2 shots

        • secretzorro says:

I know M-S is good. Still hoping we get him.

        • Kruzcampo says:

It was only Costa Rica though. See how he goes against Brazil!

        • GoalMachine says:

@Ivan, SZ – I don’t know what made you feel that SMS is good and he will do wonder for Utd….imho…he will not make any impact if UTD take him, he will be like Lukaku in mid-fld, big lad, good physique…but too slow….Don’t think in EPL, he will succeed a lot. Honestly EPL clubs have much better and physically strong defence than these national teams (with less bonding among players)….Costa Rica was a good trial as they sit deep (what UTD will face).

What UTD is lacking is a creative midfielder in number 10 role…kind of Ozil…..exactly the role Carlos Vela is playing now for Mexico. …Pogba, Matic double pivot, Sanchez LW, Rashford/Lingard RW, Lukaku CF and behind Lukaku, Mr.X…..who will control the attack and lead the game. Mata failed, Hererra failed, Lingard failed, Mkhi could have been good, but not tried for long. SMS can fit the position, but don’t think can control and link midfield and attack to a large extent.

        • GoalMachine says:

@Ivan Your pal Mitrovic is useless, improved to some extent, but still a lot to go……every match I see him, he will get me frustrated wasting hell lot of chances – 90% are not on target or, mishit. He could have been a highly sought after forward in EPL if he could start putting those in net.

        • IvanTheTerrible says:

Hey GM, how are you mate? Nice comeback with almost a small article 😆
Good analysis, I see you’ve been busy taking notes 😉

        • Nike_007 says:

GM, that double pivot would now be Fred and Matic, so the X could well be Pogba.

Or as is more likely, Matic would be the base and Pogba-Fred the dual thrust above him

      GoalMachine says:

@Ivan Very busy time going on in office, not able to spend much time for footie…watched ESP-POR match…a bit of FRA-AUS game….todays CRC- SER match and now GER-MEX match….leaving the ESP-POR match, not impressed by any.

Ofcourse my FWC team is in a mess with all 2 pointers so far …but anyway no time for FWC….will rather try to enjoy the matches. Hope to see a good game for BRA-SUI.

      • IvanTheTerrible says:

Well, at least you’ve seen the best game so far ESP vs POR.
My WC team is not doing well but I take it with a pinch of salt. Short spell of fun, before we know it will be over.
Anyway, MLS is back next Saturday. Our crazy Yankee friends decided that 10 days is enough rest and the WC doesn’t matter :big-lol:
