J Rod missed a training session in Kazan on Friday due to muscle fatigue. His left calf has reportedly been troubling him….may miss the JAP match….lets see if he starts.

How does it work with subs and transfers with there being matches from round 1 and round 2 tomorrow?

    Discussion topic!

Before this game I thought VAR was very good and was having a great tournament but something that I want to know. Does the referee have to ask for VAR to get involved or do they have a word in his ear saying it was or wasn’t a penalty/foul/goal etc? Because if they need to be asked permission then there is no point them being there as it’s all referees opinion like it always has been. Thoughts??

They talk to him Matt. In theory they’ll say to him if something is suss and a review is required. I’m guessing the Kane incident may have sparked your enquiry? I can only assume they missed it at first and as play had restarted they couldn’t then go back to it. Fairly understandable that one as the box was packed and about 4 things all happened at once.

There’s a good and full explanation here –

Cheers for that Init. Makes it very clear I wasn’t sure about it and the Kane incidents were what sparked it. Particularly the second one where I saw the ref suggest Kane dived to the floor himself so it made me think it’s the refs decision to go to the VAR. I actually really like VAR so far and it has worked pretty well. What do you think of it mate?

        • inittowinit says:

It’s a much needed step change. It’s still imperfect and the Kane pen incident possibly proved that. It was a clear pen but probably just wasn’t spotted immediately. There’s an obvious fix for that but I’m sure they’ll learn from that and others as they go along and have an improved system each time until it’s nailed. Or as near as.

        • Matt says:

Yeah like we saw it work in the Nigeria and Croatia game where Croatia got a penalty for Balogan doing something very similar to what happened to Kane tonight so if all refs start to watch and learn it should get more consistency. It’s something this sport has been calling out for so I’m liking it so far.

I am a big supporter of VAR. Last summer I went to a special MLS viewing (NYCFC vs NYRB) in one of my local London pubs with guests Frank Lampard and Howard Webb. We had a chat about that and they said this is the future of football. Howard promoted and introduced VAR to MLS last August and it has been a huge success since then.

Don’t see England doing much this WC they will be lucky to get out the group stage we need a bit of magic from Rashford

England are just so boring to watch! Completely one dimensional. They need someone with some creativity that will do something different and the only person I can think that will add that is Lallana but I don’t even think he’s in Russia.
