MLS GW33 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer *NOTE* Game-week 32 starts Wednesday at 7.00PM ET (USA), that’s 12.00am in the UK (technically Thursday). This MLS season is coming quickly to a close — only two weeks left to make your mark on what has been an exhausting season to try to follow and game-plan for your fantasy roster. And in true MLS fashion, we’re not quite yet out of the woods in dealing with the game’s difficulty. This week sees a return to action for all clubs. Six of those clubs will have a DGW — the caveat is that the round will extend all the way to Wednesday October 21 to accommodate all of the games. So instead of starting the final round of the year with a team on a DGW, the MLS team has decided to still schedule a midweek game next week…but...[Read More]
MLS GW32 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer *NOTE* Game-week 32 starts tomorrow at 7.30PM ET (USA), that’s 12.30am in the UK. Colorado, FC Dallas, Montreal, NYRB and Vancouver — that’s it. The MLS, in all its infinite wisdom, has an actual game week with only five clubs playing. While 15 teams get a bye for international dates, these five teams got the short end of the straw and have to play a round of football while other clubs get to rest and plan for their final playoff push. Is it fair to these teams? Absolutely not. Is it fair to fantasy players? Again, not really. Before getting into the meat of this article, you have to view this round for what it is — this round is simply a placeholder for your team ranking. With such limited players to choose from, there’s ...[Read More]
MLS GW31 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer GW31 comes to us almost in a gentle manner. There are no DGW’s to worry about. There are no bye weeks to have to plan around. And we have back to back wildcards coming in the next two rounds — so nothing that you do this round will have any lasting negative consequence. Nice and gentle. Everybody, whether in favor of them or not, has a strong feeling about DGW’s. Many people see them as the savior of fantasy rounds — and many people (myself included) see them as a crutch at best, and at worst they’re an element to the game that dictates your transfers for you. Look at last week’s results: 8 of the 11 players in the Dream Team were DGW players. There might be some amount of skill in choosing the correct DGW players, that’s true, ...[Read More]
MLS GW30 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer In GW29, nine of the eleven Dream Team players were from DGW teams. What that means is that you didn’t really even need to try that hard to pull in a good score if you simply defaulted and loaded up on as many active DGW players as possible right from the start. Sure, there were a few surprise rotations, and more than a few surprising results, but it felt like the strategy was a bit removed from the game this past weekend. This week will be a different ball game entirely. Whereas we had very strong teams to choose from last week, this week gives us considerably less firepower to work with. The teams on a DGW this round are Chicago, Houston, Montreal and SKC. How do you like them apples? It’s reasonable to think that people will be a bit hea...[Read More]
MLS GW29 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer The FMLS GW29 gives us yet another change in the dynamic of the game. Now, outside of GW32’s mass of bye weeks (which we get a wildcard to navigate), there are no further bye weeks to have to consider in your weekly plans. All teams are on the board and their players can be selected with the confidence that you really don’t have to sell them off if you don’t want to. But, that being said, there are still a host of DGW teams that must be taken into account. If you’re one of those players that consider variety to be the spice of life, then a fantasy game has truly never made you feel more alive than the 2015 Fantasy MLS game. The real trick this round is trying to determine if the DGW teams are going to do your squad any justice on a weekly b...[Read More]
MLS GW28 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer The week of turmoil and hand-wringing is now behind us. GW27 produced some monster scores, but now we have to plan for the reintroduction of the league’s superstars and for the typical MLS staples of bye weeks and DGWs. Even if your roster was kind to you last week, it won’t be a viable roster in the weeks to come in its current form. Hopefully you were able to spare a few roster spots for some of the teams coming back into play this week — some people did a great job of that, and others simply built the best team for the game at hand. Whatever your situation, we have some work to do.
MLS GW27 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer After this week, we have only seven rounds left of MLS fantasy. And this round is no ordinary round — it will be probably the most pivotal round we’ve seen all year. Make no mistake, whatever plans you have in store for your fantasy squad, your ambitions will be won or lost between the transition from this round to the the next. What makes this round so special? For starters, ten teams are on a bye, and ten teams are on active duty. Thus, the MLS game designers decided to give us a wildcard this round (how kind of them). But even with that wildcard, there is a very fine line we have to walk to make it effective. Not only do we have to dance around the ten teams on a bye, but we have to plan for Round 28 (with a full slate of games and...[Read More]
MLS GW26 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer Why do we love fantasy football so much? If you’re doing poorly in the game, it feels like an endless climb – and everything you do makes you second guess your basic knowledge of the sport. And conversely, if you’re doing well, it makes you realize that sometimes pure luck outweighs all of your research. Case in point: of the four teams on a DGW last week, San Jose (the team with double road games) managed to have seven players in the Dream Team. No amount of skill would’ve said that was the proper course of action when Columbus, NYCFC and SKC were also featuring twice. Like I said, sometimes you need a bit of luck. And so, here we find ourselves in another round with four teams on a DGW – and the options look about as appealing...[Read More]
MLS GW25 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer In Round 24, two things were confirmed about the MLS. The first thing is that Giovinco is better without Altidore, and the second is that Villa is better without Lampard (at least in his current mode of being pouty and disinterested). Of those two facts, one is pretty much set in stone, and the other can be changed with time. Altidore has a galactic ability to transform himself into a black hole that sucks the talent from those around him, and there’s no cure for that in his current situation. But Lampard can still be great, especially in a league with less talented players than he’s used to. And unlike Altidore, Lampard can make those around him better if he so chooses. It’s just up to Lamps to decide if he wants to turn that corner and be...[Read More]
MLS GW24 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer The FMLS game, in as much as it was a holdover until FPL started, has now run its course for many people. But for those few true addicts of fantasy football, this is still the perfect time to play FMLS. Not only do you get the benefit of having acquired more funds during the course of the year, but you have a pretty good idea now of who the real superstars are going to be week in and week out. FPL is king, but FMLS still has a purpose of being your court jester to keep your fantasy wits sharp. Here’s what you need to know going into this gameweek:
MLS GW23 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer I’m happy to report that the heat has moved on from the Northwest corner of the U.S. And with cooler temperatures, I’m able to bring a better brand of advice for this pivotal DGW that features four teams that have a ton of talent. Remember, transfers need to be locked in on Wednesday this week — and this is one of those weeks that you really don’t want to miss out on.
MLS GW20 Tips – Fantasy Major League Soccer Since we’re (again) in the midst of a DGW to plan for, we needed to accelerate this article. This week we get Chicago (bleh) and Columbus (unreliable) in the Wednesday game followed by a more normal slate of games going into the weekend. And Chicago will actually play Columbus for a second time on Sunday to wrap up their DGW. The good news is that we don’t have any bye weeks this round to have to plan around. Interesting stat: only 16 of the 34 weeks in MLS fantasy don’t have a team on a bye week. This game is exhausting to plan for sometimes. But I’m not bitter about it, I’m just getting really excited for FPL and all the glorious normalcy that comes with it. Since we’re getting that rare full week, we h...[Read More]
