Fantasy Football Fixtures Game-week 5

fantasy football fixtures tips hintsWe usually huff and curse at the first sight of an International break rudely interrupting our FPL flow just as it gathers steam and we all start stretching our legs and getting into the flow of things… Not this season! It’s actually felt more like a chance to go take a good long hard look in the FPL mirror, Cinderella style, and just hope it doesn’t crack at the sight of those first four game-weeks. The break has for once been timely and afforded every fantasy manager a chance to quietly reflect on the train wreck that preceded it. Now whether that meant a wholesale change in the shape of a wildcard or a decision to slowly push on, with the originally well thought out plans and players, in the hope that some sort of normality returns soon is an individual decision. What we can all do regardless is look ahead and plan (with hope), and some fixtures analysis of the next few weeks is as good a place as any to start. So let’s take a look at who we feel have the best fixtures ahead of them and who we feel it may be wise to err on the side of caution with.

And so onto the teams themselves for GW5 and beyond…

FAVOURABLE FIXTURES
Bournemouth – Norwich (A), Sunderland (H), Stoke (A)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]Bournemouth started off with a couple of narrow 1-0 defeats (albeit one of them being an almost criminal loss at Anfield) and things were looking dicey given their inability to find the net but then came a ‘Eureka!’ moment with an outstanding performance in a 3-4 thriller away at West Ham. It almost felt like the Leicester one away at Spurs last season when the floodgates opened and the football started flowing. The one difference here being that Bournemouth actually won it. They followed it up with a very creditable 1-1 draw at home to Leicester themselves but it did suddenly feel like we could finally have faith in their ability to score.

Whether that was a freak occurrence or a sign of better things to come we don’t yet know but certainly the next few fixtures should be a good indication and allow them a chance to express their attacking potential. First up are Norwich away who have allowed an average of 2 goals per game at home so far. After that it is everyone’s favorite plaything – Big Dick’s Mackems – bottom of the league and the most goals conceded with 10 against so far and looking likely to collect a few more in that column. The last game in the featured sequence is Stoke away who are yet to win or indeed even score in front of their home ‘crowd’.

So that feels like a good run for them and to sweeten the pie the game after the above three is Watford at home so any investment now in Bournemouth personnel can easily be considered a month long purchase. GW’s 9 & 10 may prove to be more difficult as they then run into Man City away and Spurs at home but that’s a fair way off so for the short to medium term we feel they are a good investment.

[divider_1px]

Leicester City – Aston Villa (H), Stoke (A), Arsenal (H)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]Now of course as soon as the news filtered through that Claudio Ranieri had been appointed as the new manager at Leicester we all ran out and stocked up on their players as we fully expected them to be sat in the Champions League places after a few weeks. Right, right? No. Of course not. At best we felt there would be a transitional period of settling in and at worst we probably feared a complete meltdown, Greek stylie. In contrast they haven’t skipped a beat and if you’d somehow missed all of the summer you would be forgiven for thinking that last season hadn’t ended, Nigel Pearson was still terrifying everyone and that the Leicester juggernaut was still in full flow. Some of those things have changed. That Leicester are still in full flow hasn’t judging by their early results.

Up next are a couple of winnable fixtures at home to Villa and away at Stoke followed by a tougher one against Arsenal. Villa are being Villa and flattering to deceive as ever. If Leicester are in the mood and Claudio sends them out fired up to Kasabian again then they should have no problem dispatching of the Villans. A trip to Stoke is next who are yet to register a victory this season and haven’t scored a home goal this season. The third game, as mentioned, is Arsenal but even that is at home and you’d fancy Leicester to at least take it to the Gunners. Beyond that they travel to Norwich which again is winnable for them.

[divider_1px]

Man City – Crystal Palace (A), West Ham (H), Spurs (A)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]According to most observers Man City well and truly ‘won’ the transfer window. They certainly spent the most but they also did the majority of their business early on with ruthless efficiency. The team is reflecting this on the pitch so far. And that’s even before the most expensive and latest acquisition even doffs his pale blue cap. Sans Kevin de Bruyne, City have been exciting and creative and swept aside all before them. With him, they may just be unstoppable. For anyone unfamiliar with the former Chelsea ‘flop’, having been cast aside as surplus to requirements at the Bridge by Jose, Mr de Bruyne took himself off to the Bundesliga with Wolfsberg and fairly ripped it up. Last season he registered 16 goals and 27 assists in all competitions and was named as Footballer of the Year. And he didn’t even play for Bayern.

Such has been their start that the actual fixtures themselves have been rendered almost irrelevant to an extent. They took on their next best rivals in Chelsea and barely got out of a sweat before dispatching them for a 3-0 hiding. They’ve since seen to West Brom for the same scoreline, having previously knocked two past both Everton and Watford without reply. For the record it’s Palace away followed by West Ham at home and then Spurs away. As if it matters. Beyond that it actually gets even better with back to back home games against Newcastle and Bournemouth. Buy City players with confidence.

[divider_1px]

West Ham – Newcastle (H), Man City (A), Norwich (H)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]Here’s a trick question – West Ham have scored the 2nd most goals this season with 9 to their credit. Liverpool have scored the joint least with just 2. Who’s higher up in the league table?! Ok so it wasn’t that tricky but the answer is an odd one nevertheless. It is Liverpool. We serve this up to highlight one thing though – regardless of results, West Ham are scoring freely which is always music to any fantasy manager’s ears. You should be aware that they are also conceding fairly freely with 6 against which is the 4th joint worst in the league. The message there is clear.

Whilst West Ham may not have matched the outlay of Man City they certainly weren’t to be found sitting on their hands during this transfer window with boss Bilic strengthening his squad with last minute swoops for the likes of Alex Song, Michail Antonio, Nikica Jelavic and Victor Moses. We recommend waiting to see which of these makes an immediate push for the inclusion but certainly the likes of Moses will be of interest with him being listed as a midfielder but likely to occupy a spot much more advanced.

Their fixtures are tricky to negotiate with two very attractive home games being split by one very difficult looking away trip to Man City. Newcastle (h), Man City (a), Norwich (h). Play, bench, play. That looks to be the order of the day. It’s Sunderland away next after those so you could be forgiven for hanging onto any Hammers assets past that City game.

[divider_1px]

BE WARY OF…
Everton – Chelsea (H), Swansea (A), West Brom (A)
Everton have done ok so far, especially given the fixtures they were handed. They’ll have to continue to do ok for a bit too as the fixtures don’t get much easier for a while. Facing Chelsea, Swansea, Liverpool, Man United and Arsenal in 5 of the next 6 makes that solitary trip to West Brom look like their best prospect. And even that won’t be easy. They traditionally have a habit of raising their game and giving the ‘big boys’ a good game, especially at home, so all isn’t lost but we certainly wouldn’t be rushing out to buy any Everton players in expectation any time soon.

[divider_1px]

Man United – Liverpool (H), Southampton (A), Sunderland (H)
A decent if unspectacular start for LVG was tempered somewhat by a loss to Swansea last time out. The fixtures themselves do not smile kindly on them for the next 6 weeks in all honesty with the one exception being Sunderland at home in GW7. Everyone likes playing Sunderland these days, especially at home. The other 5 look challenging though as they face Liverpool and Southampton as per above and then also Arsenal, Everton and Man City in the next three after that.

[divider_1px]

Newcastle – West Ham (A), Watford (H), Chelsea (H)
Newcastle are second from bottom. The fact that only Sunderland prevent them from being face down last may bring an ironic smile to some Toon faces but either way it’s not a good place to be at any stage of the season. To be fair to them they hit every branch on the way down that sh*tty fixtures tree at the start and the bad news is that the end isn’t in sight for a good while! An away trip to West Ham next isn’t ideal. A home game to newly promoted Watford may bring a relief for a week but then it’s Chelsea up next followed quickly by Man City away.

[divider_1px]

One week only picks!
Whilst many managers plan their transfers with the next few weeks ahead in mind we are also conscious that some simply play each game-week as it comes. This may be for a variety of reasons such as having a rotating forward or simply because they need the best pick in order to facilitate another important move. A such we have decided to take a quick look at the upcoming GW5 in isolation and give you our top 3 picks for this week only…

Pick 1
Our number one go-to team this week would be Leicester at home to Aston Villa. Leicester have scored 5 at home but have conceded 3 so we would probably go for an attacker here. Villa have won one and lost one on the road and have only scored 2 goals in those games.

Pick 2
Arsenal may not feature in the main article this week and that’s predominantly because they have a couple of tricky trips to Chelsea and Leicester on the horizon but this week you can buy with confidence as they host a Stoke team that are yet to register a win. Granted, Arsenal themselves have been stuttering away but this weeks fixtures is as good as any to kick start their campaign.

Pick 3
Our final pick sees a bouyant West Ham play host to a struggling Newcastle and we’d fully expect the Hammers to take their Liverpool confidence into this one and register their first home points of the season.

Fixture Fun
We are of course in the midst of an International break and a lot of your players will currently be scattered all over the globe and travelling back to their clubs at various stages of this week so be sure to keep an eye and ear out for any injury updates once they have returned.

On a WC, which team should I play?

    AT says:

Morning all, few questions to help me with my Wildcard team:
-How do you think City will line up behind Aguero? Will De Bruyne play down the centre? I can see them all rotating throughout the game myself..
    -Will Evans start?
-Would you rather have Wilson and play 4-3-3 or Mahrez and play 3-5-2? I would have Vardy for this week’s fixture only to cover for Mahrez in what I would deem their best chance of a win in the next three.

    Thanks in advance

      AT
      – this is the million pound question… you would think Silva in the middle, but I see them interchanging throughout the game.
      – No idea, sorry mate
      – Are you going for Vardy and Mahrez in your WC team? Bit confused in the question haha

      • AT says:

No worries on the second question, I don’t either!

And haha sorry, no. If I go for Wilson I will have Vardy too for GW5 before transferring him for Diouf in GW6. This enables me to cover for not having Mahrez (hopefully) in a decent fixture before two tricky fixtures and then utilising Stoke’s great run of fixtures.

If I went with Mahrez I would probably have Gomis but I don’t want to overkill on Ayew and Gomis so want to avoid that really.

      NIN says:

      Morning AT.

      1. Does it really matter all that much? They’re going to blow most teams away so all will get in on the act. Interchanging is the way.
      2. Should do, in place of Olsson you would think.
      Mahrez for sure.

      • PeterPan says:

NIN if thats the thinking Sterling would be a stand out option…
Yes would love KdB or Silva, but you saving 1m when either of those 3 can do magic

        • NIN says:

Depends how your team is set up and what can be done with that saving really. I’ve got Silva, Alexis, Pedro and Aguero and it hasn’t affected squad balance at all. T’is more than doable.

        • PeterPan says:

          Nin,
Really? What is your team? If you mind showing.
On a WC and playing with options, best Ive come up with is having Sterling instead of Silva to make it look good

        • NIN says:

PP, here you go mate. (c) is totally undecided so ignore that one for now. Mahrez will run the two big boys very close, though.

        • PeterPan says:

          Nin,
          My attacking 8 goes
          Sterling Pedro Mahrez Sanchez Ayew
          Aguero Wilson Ighalo
Looking at playing a 3-5-2. Have Kol and Cech in the back…
have Gomez and Oxford in defense (Gomez is a cheap way into a top 6 team and Oxford is a 4m that does play) and a 4m keeper since I will only play Cech.
So leaves me with 9.5m for 2 defenders…. (whereas Silva I have 8.3m) I can do a lot more with 9.5m than 8.3m and that can easily fill be the difference between Silva and Sterling this season

        • NIN says:

PP – The striker selection concerns me. In seasons past, i’d usually have 2 premium forwards and two premium mid’s. This season i flipped that a bit and have 3 big mid’s + Sergio. Still, the 6.5m + range is much more workable than having the cheaper option + Ighalo, even cheaper again. Squad flexibility is a big thing. By that i mean being able to work in/out players in attacking positions with minimum fuss. Oxford hasn’t really been playing either, to be fair. 132 minutes in 4 GW’s is basically a blank spot in your squad. Worst case scenario, Oxford stays out and Gomez gets dropped. Ighalo doesn’t seem nailed either. That’s three potential blank spots in your squad and no real easy route to fix them. This is the stuff i try and consider when on a WC. They’re precious so be sure to have a plan/setup to deal with every possible outcome, including the worst case scenario.

Similar to AT, my advice is to lose a mid and use the funds to get as many nailed on players as you can, that work together as good as you can get. Piling funds into midfield and weakening your strikers and defensive lineup will come back to bite at some stage.

        • PeterPan says:

          NIN,
Oxford was injured during the game with Leicester and made his return as a sub against Liverpool. But I dont expect him to play every game. His more a 4m filler that plays occasionally – which Im ok with.
Gomez seems to have made the LB position his so far.
Ighalo came on off the bench the 1st game and started the next 3.

In the past I have always gone 3-4-3. Was thinking of Gomis upfront, but prefer Ayew in the mid and dont want to overkill with Swansea players. Not a fan of Diouf (well more so that he plays for Stoke – who have made good signings, just think there are better options elsewhere) and besides him and Gomis there isnt that much left till you get to Benteke (working up).
          I would play a 3-5-2 most times (maybe even a 4-5-1)
That being said I can do Diouf and Sako in for Ighalo and Ayew…

        • NIN says:

4-5-1? That says it all mate. Playing 4-5m defenders ahead of 6m ish strikers… nope, iffy one that. If you’re happy with the setup then go for it. It’s too risky, for me.

        • PeterPan says:

          NIN,
See my error when I wrote that.
Basically I would play a 5 man midfield every game, also Aguero, Kol and Cech. So 3 would play between Wilson, Ighalo, Oxford, Gomez, Cedric and Morgan of that list Ighalo is near the back of the que…
But if I get Diouf then I will play more a 3-4-3… but leaves me with 100 different ideas….

      • AT says:

        Cheers, NIN.
Just thinking about how Silva performed out wide last season..
Cheers, will have to hope so!
You reckon? Bournemouth have better fixtures (the best fixtures!) and Wilson is a striker so should surely get more opportunities. My main worry is that I can only sell Mahrez for £5.8m and if it turns out I made the wrong choice it could be £6.2/6.3m to buy him back. With Gradel gone that does lessen Wilson’s appeal mind..hmmm

        • PeterPan says:

AT I think Mahrez will do a Michu this season, keep him.
We shall see about Wilson, but I have them both

        • NIN says:

He’ll still get a boat load of assists. I reckon he’ll stay as the 10 but, again, it shouldn’t make all that much difference really.

If you fancy Wilson to outscore Mahrez then go with him, without worrying about rebuy value as you’re trying to accumulate points for the now.

        • AT says:

Barcelona thinking about Mahrez apparently hahaha, that sounds good enough for me 😉

        • AT says:

Isn’t really a single £4.5m striker out there though, making a Wildcard team with a bench player seems silly to me, is it not?

        • NIN says:

Certainly not, AT. There’s no real reason a 4.5m striker should worm it’s way into a WC squad. As you say, there aren’t really any anyway. In that case i’d rather go with a 4m defender and have a playable forward instead. Even that’s a push though. Backup GK and 13 playable outfield, for me.

        • PeterPan says:

          AT
Im leaning towards a 3-5-2 with a 5m (playing) bench striker.
Feel midfielders are very strong this season, that and besides Aguero I havent found many reasonable strikers to go with him. In my opinion

        • AT says:

Tricky one. I’ll post my current situation below…trying to get City and Arsenal defence looks to be the real issue but, given the way BPs are being spread, I want at least two decent defenders (especially as it will allow me to get Chelsea in if hey start playing soon).

  3. 21
    nishant says:

how is Olsson as a 4.5mn defender?

also would you guys get in Sanchez for Ayew? I have Ayew currently. its just a matter getting him in. funds are ready.

am just not sure should I do the swap this week or let Ayew continue his good form

  4. 22
    AT says:

Current Wildcard situation, thoughts on where to go?
Dropping Mahrez to a £4.5m and Graham to Wilson would sort it (after price rises) but Mahrez is looking great and I guess his fixtures are okay.
Don’t really want a non-playing player in my entire squad.

    Thanks.

    • 22.1
      NIN says:

This is the issue i always run into with a 3-5-2. Midfield ends up too stacked (even though there are some cheaper players in there) which leaves things light up top. Best advice i can give is to make a call between Mahrez/Ayew and bin one for a cheapo, upgrade the disastrous Danny Graham and then you’d be looking pretty good.

      • AT says:

It’s a call between Ayew and Gomis in many ways. I feel like Ayew is a better option (and cheaper) but at least Westwood is a better option than Graham!
Want Diouf but struggling desperately to fit him in. Couple more days to tinker at least!

    • 22.2
      nishant says:

that is exactly what I would do with your team if you are not a fan of 3-5-2
getting Wilson allows you to play a 3-4-3 which sometimes have an upper edge going with 3 strikes

if you downgrade Mahrez though, get Westwood in for him
      wonderful midfield there

    • 22.3
      PeterPan says:

      AT
Graham and Monreal out for Ighalo and 4.5m def… would sort that price gap out as well

  5. 23
    Pippin says:

Hi all, been away for a couple of weeks so completely out of the loop. Not keen on using the WC despite a poor start. Thinking that the main issue to address is non-playing Mings. I have 1FT and 1.4m in the bank- quick sideways move to Francis seems a decent option. Not keen on the defensive options from the teams with good fixtures- alternatives might be Gomez, Cathcart, Ward/Dann- not many great options in the sub-5.0m category. Anything else urgently needing attention? Hazard > Sanchez feels kneejerk, but it crossed my mind.

    • 23.1
      NIN says:

Hi Pippin. Hmm, two options here that i can see. 1) Bank the FT. 2) Get a new GK. I’d lean toward either of those before selling Mings. You’re not short in defence with three set starters so no issues there.

      • Captain Dicky and His C Men says:

If that was me I would WC.

        • NIN says:

On second thought, there are a number of issues aren’t there? Hmm, cant argue against a WC here at all now that you’ve mentioned it.

        • Pippin says:

Maybe I’ll give it a go…part of me likes to hang onto the WC as long as possible (it was handy last year) but given that the second one can be played any time perhaps there’s less need.

I do agree the team needs some work: both keepers, Mings, Cedric, the entire midfield (bar Mahrez) and Defoe & Pelle could all be usefully moved on. I’ll have a tinker and see if I can do any better.

          Thanks Dicky and NIN!

      • Pippin says:

Cheers NIN, those are decent options. Pantsuuu has not worked out how I’d hoped, for sure. Cech might be the way to go perhaps. Will mull it over.

  6. 24
Captain Dicky and His C Men says:

Can somebody offer some selection advice. Want Redmond in my starting 11 but don’t see how I can. Also I have 1 FT and I’m thinking of removing Romero.
