If Liverpool win the Europa League will we have 5 EPL teams in the CL or will the team in 4th get bumped?

Thanks Snookie! That was really helpful. I wasn’t sure if we were allowed to have five teams in the champions league. As a Spurs fan I still remember 2012… I didn’t realize they made that rule change after that. Cheers!

        • DMC says:

Pancho – that specific rule didn’t changed, that is, the winner of the CL has a guaranteed spot on the next year’s edition regardless of their national league rank and in the event that that team didn’t qualify via the national league rank the last team that did actually steps out. That’s what happened in 2012 with chelsea/spurs and could still happen this year with City/Utd.
What changed here, is that the winner of Europa League also gets a direct spot on next year’s CL edition.

        • DMC says:

That being said, I hear you on that spurs frustration. It was harsh and totally unappropriated especially when you look at how in the hell chelsea managed to win that CL on penalties against Bayern and in Munich! With freaking caretaker di mateo on the helm… Football is just brutal sometimes. I mean couldn’t that have happened on any other given year and not on the one where spurs finally got to a top 4 position?

        • Pancho says:

DMC, the rule did change. Any given league can have up to 5 champions league teams now. They changed that after that debacle in 2012. The issue for next year’s cup comps is that if Liverpool and City win th cups then we would have the two of them plus the top 3 in the league. If City finish in the top 4 then we would have the top 4 + Liverpool. At least that’s what the article says.

        • DMC says:

Oh, you are right! There is a change here. I thought that the only way for a country to have 5 teams in CL was if one of them had won the Europa League, but has changed and a country may still have 5 if any of their teams wins the CL itself AND is ranked outside of the national league top 4. Yes, that is new.
One thing also spings to mind after (re) reading the article, which is that chelsea may still get european football next season should they finish 8th and Utd win the cup and liverpool win the europa league. Too many”ifs”? Well, look at how they won the CL … I wonder if hazard will be back in time for DGW37!

Hello boys and girls. Does a technophobic granddad qualify for this site? Its only taken me 2 months to figure out how to log in!!!Have been doing FPL since 2008/09 and only once have I finished outside the top 90k.This year, like most of you, started at 2.4m in GW4 but have climbed back to 67k. On 102 for this week with 10 to play. Love the banter, information and suggestions on this site – don’t know how you all find the time.

Welcome to the site gramps, nice darts over the years there. Looks like you’ll safely finish within your worst ever anyway, no such luck here! And yeah don’t worry, I’m pretty sure that if Elle and Silvers manage to get on that you’ll have no problems smile

Welcome to the site gramps; you did provide proof that you are human which is not tecnhophobic at all.
And congrats on that climbing back. Maybe a top 50k for many here is not out of the question yet. Surely a strange and odd season though.

Nervous for these team sheets tonight! Biggest of the season and I just know there will be a few spanners in the works thrown at us all…

      DMC says:

rambo, I’m looking at 11 yet to play but if I’m honest I’ll be happy if at least 7 of them start. This has been a very odd dgw but sitting on 92 with 3 not playing and 2 not starting on the first take I can’t say it’s a bad one.
I will when several of these guys are being rested on 35 though…

      • OriginalRambo says:

I’m sitting around the same. Indeed, GW35 is going to be another headache, many have, and will be relying on 2/3 from LFC, and Klopp could leave teams of 8/9 playing if he chooses. Lesson learnt for next year though!

        • DMC says:

In deed. Nevermind city itself. I can easily see kun and kdb being rested for the CL midweek game. Ssssshhhhhh. The “good” part, is that this will affect many teams so hits are not required/needed. Perhaps.
