Fantasy Football Live Match Chat Gameweek 24

Welcome to Fantasy Football Live Match Chat Gameweek 24. Time to get the show on the road once again and we start down at the south coast for the lunchtime fare as Chelsea visit Brighton. Six 3pm matches follow as top-6 stragglers Arsenal host the slowly improving Crystal Palace, Man Utd take the short trip to Burnley, Everton welcome West Brom, Leicester entertain Watford, Stoke clash with Huddersfield and in what should be a more entertaining affair, Bournemouth go to West Ham.

The evening match sees Newcastle entering the lion’s den as they look to stop Kun, KdB et al at the Etihad. Sunday sees just one fixture and it’s another London team travelling south as Spurs go to Southampton.

Our game-week concludes on Monday with Swansea hosting free-scoring Liverpool.

As a little aside from the mocking Init, it’d be a neat feature on the website to get email notifications if your name is ‘@’ in conversations.

I’m certainly not a programming whiz, so not a clue how to do it, but I guess it could operate just like Twitter does where you get notifications.

        • That’s a fantastic idea, but IT doesn’t like fantastic ideas. smile

        • inittowinit says:

          Inertia. Unfortunately.

        • inittowinit says:

Seriously though, we had email notifications set on comments for years and very few people used them. I did for a bit as a trial to check it was working and in all honesty it just became annoying! Hence we no longer have them smile

        • I still like a rolling chat and a regular one like MLSfantasyboss. sad

        • inittowinit says:

Does their ‘regular chat’ aka this one, get used?

        • Not much on there, but a rolling chat by itself could still work if the reply button was used. The problem with rolling chats is that whatever you posted disappears quickly and sometimes never gets seen, but if people are using the reply button instead of just blurting out anything and talking to themselves it could work. Perhaps a rolling chat with a bigger delay, if you refresh it fine, but programming it to refresh once every minute or two could work. Well enough with wasting my time on this. Just can’t be done.

        • AT says:

I’ve seen the FFScout’s rolling pages and they are awful. Perhaps its their traffic but people’s comments seem to disappear within about a second.

I remember the old email notifications. The only reason I did not use them was because when I posted something, I knew I would be coming back on to see if I had received any responses, so I’m not sure it is necessary there. I was thinking it would be handy though if someone is dropped into a conversation they have not initiated or engaged in, e.g. if there is a question specific to a team then someone not currently on the site might be best placed to answer it (e.g. Newcastle and Rosco, Milburn etc.).

Perhaps it might not be a good idea though, as I can imagine people just ‘@ing’ Init for his thoughts on their teams hahaha

        • Yeah, rolling chats can be awful if there are too many users. There is a mls site that has both. Problem there is, that everyone uses the rolling chat and barely ever comments on articles. But I do feel that having both could be useful if we ever figured out how to have the rolling chat for small talk and the article chat for RMT or longer posts. That could be tricky though.

The comments bit is the only thing that ever really bugs me. Not bugs me as in that there’s anything wrong with it, but just whether we would be better with a different format. And I have thought about it a lot, and still can’t come to a conclusion.

The only real alternative is to switch to a rolling one but then you can’t have pictures and attachments. And given that the rolling one expires and needs refreshing after a bit anyway if you leave it then what’s the real difference? Rolling is only rolling if you are sat on there for hours. But if that’s the case then you probably need to get a life! Or a job.

Pressing refresh is a natural thing now anyway. The BBC website says it’s auto refreshed but you often have to do it manually regardless.

Be interested to see what people think / want?

Personally I think we have the balance about right.

        • I definitely prefer the pictures and I’ll take responsibility for refreshing content as I do, as you say, with various other sports websites I visit.

I look at Scout from time to time (not nearly as much anymore since a certain ‘someone’ was kicked off their boards and the place lost most of its comedic value) and although it could pertain to their volume of users, but I often look at the scrolling comments and they make little or no sense as there’s not a lot or context you can give to them.

Happy with what we have currently if you’re asking me.

        • DMC says:

I like it as is. Don’t like the rolling chat format.

        • AT says:

Yeah, I prefer the style the site currently has. I was only asking about notifications! haha

      • inittowinit says:

I’ll be honest Elle, I don’t get it. My 2 brother in laws are both also supposedly ‘fans’ of Liverpol but likewise never actually mention Liverpool. Instead they choose to obsess over rival teams. It’s a typical trait of most Liverpool fans that I know, come to think of it. It’s odd. Schadenfreude by association seems to be the MO. Why not just support your own team?
