Fantasy football Trends From The Top – GW23

fantasy footballWelcome to this week’s edition of Trends From the Top. Just in case you were interested, this article was started in Shanghai, edited in Detroit and completed in NYC. What a day and what a game week especially if you had key players such as Aguero, Alli (who was sitting on my bench) and Ighalo! Let’s take a deeper look to see what our fantasy leaders are doing in order for us to better assess and plan any possible next moves.

Who was the most captained player by the top ten for Gameweek 23?

This week you might be surprised to know that only 40% of the top ten managers selected Aguero (24 points), especially since 80% of our top managers own him. An additional manager also chose wisely in selecting Ighalo (24 points), while another 40% selected Lukaku (4 points) with the last remaining manager selecting Kane (10 points).

What recent trend have most of the top managers been deploying?

In researching this week’s leaders, it was interesting to see that once again, most managers have already deployed their 2nd wildcard. These leaders certainly thought it would be beneficial to take such a chance early on. What we are seeing is that the wildcard is pretty essential if you need/want to bring Aguero in due to his hefty price tag and that is what the leaders are essentially doing. 40% of the top leaders have used all their chips which is inclusive of 2 wildcards, the all-out-attack, bench boost and triple captain.

What are some other interesting findings regarding our top leaders?

Four of the top 10 for this week have been in the top 10 for over 10 weeks!

-Our 8th ranked leader, Struthious D, a player we have discussed a few times in this piece has held the first place position for an impressive 7 weeks and the second place position for 5 weeks. Struthious D, took a small dive this week as he only brought in 37 points.

-Wombats, our number two has finally returned to the top ten after being MIA for a few weeks. Wombat held the top position for Gameweeks 10, 11 and 12.

-None of our leaders have ever finished in the top 1%.

-2 of our leaders are new to the top ten.

Who were the most popular players chosen by the top ten for Gameweek 23?

Goalkeepers: For this past gameweek 60% of the top managers selected Cech while 30% had Butland and 10% de Gea.

Defenders: This week we saw 17 defenders make the cut for top managers. Interestingly enough, Alderweireld (70%) was the only defender with an ownership rate of over 50%. Sagna and Bellerin came in at 40% while Koscielny was the next most popular pick with 30% ownership followed by Johnson and Dann with 20%, and Morgan, Shawcross, Fonte, Nyom, Smalling, Francis, Huth, Azpilicueta, McAuley, Dier and Simpson each with 10%.

Midfielders: When you look at midfielders, the top 10 managers had 12 different picks with several getting only 10% of the vote such as Wijnaldum, Cabaye, Yaya Toure, and Barkley. Mahrez was the most popular pick with 80% ownership followed by Ozil at 60%, Payet and Alli at 50%, De Bruyne at 30% and Ayew, Willian and Deulofeu at 20%.

Forwards: This week, the front line consisted of only 6 picks among the top managers. Aguero came in with 80% (and I am sure this will rise to 100%) while Kane, Lukaku and Ighalo each had 60% ownership. Vardy was selected by 30% of the top managers with Giroud on 10%.

In summation, the Must-Haves for top managers for Gameweek 23 were Cech, Alderweireld, Mahrez, Alli, Payet, Ozil, Kane, Lukaku, Ighalo and Aguero as they all had an ownership rate of 50% or higher.

Other interesting facts:

-The average score for Gameweek 23 among the top 10 was 59.2 points which is meager 16.2 points above average for the week. (Statistically it has been much higher in past game weeks).

-England maintained control of most of the leader board as 40% of the top 10 were from England. The remaining countries were Australia, Scotland, Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sweden, and Denmark.

-24 points separates 1st place from 10th.

Best of luck in Gameweek 24!

Thanks for this excellent piece. Always great to know how the leaders got on. Personally can’t understand being in the top 10, having Aguero but NOT captaining him. Especially after him sounding the week before with two goals.

Thanks for your efforts once more.

Right to bench Ozil? Planning to save FT and get Sanchez for Kdb and Firmino for Mahrez together with 2FT’s. Thoughts?

Morning all, very stuck on what to do!
Ighalo’s fixtures are tough now and the plan since around GW21 was to go Ighalo to Lukaku for this next run of games. Do you think this is an astute move?

2FT and nothing in the bank.

Thinking that to raise the cash I should drop KDB, thoughts? Thinking Firmino or Alli at the moment (although would need Lukaku to drop at least a day before others raise in (or KDB drops) in order to grab Firmino.

Really not sure, thanks in advance.

Bit stuck at the moment, here is my struggling team. Two vaguely green arrows the last couple of weeks, although sat just outside the top 500k…

2 free transfers, 1mill in the bank.

Any suggestions? I’m fairly happy with my team this week, maybe look to getting rid of Ighalo for a few weeks – lukaku?
