Fantasy Premier League Set Piece Takers 2014-15

Tips Ok then so we saw quite a few requests for an updated ‘Set-Piece takers’ list on the comments recently and it jogged our memory that we hadn’t done one and as ever we took notice and decided to take action. We had a quick look around the offices of FF247 and found Eddy and Flingy slumped in the corner playing cards and a light bulb came on! So suddenly Eddy became our roving reporter and was whisked around the world to see all of the pre-season friendlies he could manage in order to bring you the latest set-piece table, while we locked Flingy in a darkened room, with Google as his only friend, to bring you the stats on last seasons set-piece specialists. Enjoy…

Please find below the FF247 Set Piece Takers List for 2014/15. This list is a guide that we hope will help you select players that have the potential to bring in goals and crucial assist points. The table is based on information gathered from last season’s games, Opta stats, pre-season friendlies and FF247 community input.

The article itself is archived under the tab at the top of the page entitled Tips/News and is linked under the drop down box ‘FPL SET-PIECE TAKERS 2014-15’ so you can refer back to it at any time, as are many of our other articles and helpful tools such as Fixture Tracker and Weekly Tips.

Please be aware that this list is subject to change due to player injuries, drop in form, suspensions, manager whims, etc. The list will be updated throughout the season and as ever we welcome anybody in our community to inform us if you are aware of any updated roles or indeed anything you think we have got wildly inaccurate! You’re not perfect and neither are we 😉

Players are listed in order of priority for each particular role –

So while Eddy was jet setting around the globe, Flingy was busy squirreling away to bring us the highlights of last season’s set-piece stats which are below for your perusal. The first deals with the players who had the ‘Most’ in each section. The second examines the teams themselves. We hope you find these both informative and helpful. There are obviously some players in there who are no longer with us (gone abroad, not died) and there are new players at some clubs who will take over some of these duties.

Hey NZ, last year I thought about this a lot, I even think I started the season with Baines as part of a back 4 and just used him as a midfielder. The Coleman situation messed that up and I was forced to move but, I’ll try and give a quick analysis of my reasoning.

If you find my team a few pages back, you’ll see my back 5 are:
Luis + Debuchy (Premiums), Mariappa, Collins, Yoshida (Rotation £4.5m). Totalling £25.5m.
In my midfield I have 2 rotation players, Snodgrass and Sigurdsson, totalling £12m.
The total for my defence and those two mids is £37.5m.

Now, if I were to play 4-3-3 instead of that, I’d upgrade Yoshida to Baines. That’s an extra £2.5m.
To counter that, and basically ignore the rotation mids and downgrade one of them to a £4.5m mid, £1.5m behind in budget than my original team.

If you can justify £1.5m for the fact Baines plays as a midfielder at times, takes set pieces (or some?), and has a high assist potential along with clean sheet points, that’s up to you. It still interests me now, especially that Manchester United seem to be playing 3-5-2 with Shaw as a wingback. Swap Shaw for Baines and you’ve cut the deficit to just £.5m more than the original team.

Beware, I seemed to get caught up in the fact I was playing 4-3-3, as did others rating my choices on this. Keep it in your mind that you’re effectively buying a semi-midfielder so you’re still in a 3-4-3 basically, with one less option for your midfield.

Flingy, thank you mate your in-depth comment has really helped. I couldn’t get past the idea that he scored more than most similarly priced midfielders, you have helped give a little perspective. I usually go for a defence like yours with two premium and rotating around that. ironically before getting Baines I had just Shaw as a premium, two at £5mil, one £4.5 and one £4. This season I’m trying to break my ‘always play 4-3-4’ rule (currently I’m on Baines AND 3-5-2 rotating 3-4-3, thats just wild for me!!) TBH I don’t think Baines will stay, I can understand why people do but your logic has swayed me. What is your logic on having two premium defenders who must stay? Why not one or, as Cookie has done above, none over £5mil? And how does your team fit into the formation you plan to play? Thanks again.

I personally think you can gain a lot from getting some premium defenders in early on. Once they rise, you’ve got no hope and you start to justify it by weakening your midfield, losing any other decent cheap options in the process and ending up with playing a cheap option as a starter.

Over a season I expect Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, and Crystal Palace to gather the most clean sheets, it’s a trend that has stuck for a number of years.

        Krul Pantilimon
        Luis Debuchy Collins Mariappa SHAW
        Ramsey Mirallas Sterling Sigurdsson ALBRIGHTON
        Jovetic Rooney Costa

Using this as an example I’d play Luis, Debuchy, Shaw every week. Collins / Mariappa would rotate on home fixtures. The midfield I’d play Ramsey, Sterling, and either Mirallas or Sigurdsson depending on fixture. The front three would remain unchanged.

Morning lads, cheers for the comments, great job on those stats Thingy, Caulker is making a few of the lads giddy with last years figures

Very good article gents! Really like it when two authors combine on a piece with different styles like this. Rarely does an article cause me to instantly do something; usually I read a whole bunch around the given subject and act after I’ve thought on it for a while. After this though, Ferdy –> Caulker happened straight away laugh

Flingy, don’t suppose you know if his attempts were significantly skewed towards home games or not? As 5.0 is still a lot for a rotation player.. might be an idea to just play him all the time?

Cheers CC, yeah it worked well, a bit like Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello.

So this is my 13254867th draft team. It’s either Panti or Mannone, whichever seems the most likely to start.

    Thoughts?
