And then there were four. It’s semi-final time at the World Cup and very much a South America vs Europe affair. We’ve said a sad farewell to Colombia, who received an amazing reception when they returned to Bogota. Also offski are Costa Rica, who played with so much heart and a stubborn defence throughout the tournament, while Belgium and France have also exited stage left.
Our first semi-final sees hosts Brazil take on the World Cup’s Herr Consistent, Germany. Since 1950, the Germans have failed to reach at least the quarter-final stage on just one occasion and will be looking to add to their three stars by going all the way. Brazil, of course, will have home support on their side – unfortunately for them they won’t have influential defender and captain Thiago Silva or their main attacking threat, Neymar, on their side – they are ruled out through suspension and injury respectively. But it’s ok, Germany have Mesut Ozil, which evens things up somewhat. The Germans were back to their robotic best in disposing of France, while Brazil produced their best display of the tournament, certainly in the first half as they fought, literally, past the plucky Colombians.
The second semi brings together Argentina and the Netherlands, both of whom have somewhat stuttered through so far. The Dutch needed penalties to find a way past Costa Rica, which will be an obvious concern for LVG as he attempts to plot a way past the Argentinian defence which has kept two clean sheets in a row. If recent form is anything to go, goals may be at a premium here, so it may just be a moment of magic from Lionel Messi, Arjen Robben, Gonzalo Higuain or RvP which settles the tie. Worth noting that Angel Di Maria has been ruled out with injury, but better news of Sergio Aguero, who is expected to have recovered from (his latest) injury in time for the showdown.

What a mental game that was. Ended up sticking the armband on Hummels, which was a disaster, but Boateng, Oscar, Khedira, Lahm and Mueller all got me a decent score. Have Cillessen, De Vrij, Rojo, Mascherano, Wijnaldum, Robben, Messi, and Depay to pick from tomorrow as well- so feeling more or less happy with where I am. At least I don’t have the tricky captaincy decision which some of you may face 😉

haha. I’m glad my risk on putting Schürrle in paid off! I’ll be on 73 after I take out Cesar, Hummels, and David Luiz out. I have 4 players to choose from so hopefully I get it right 😉

Hi Josh. Got 68 mate, but will take Maicon (2) out and probably Hummels (3) as well- he was my captain, annoyingly. Didn’t really ever get close to scoring cos the Germans always just scored instead of winning corners! And then he went off… I’ve not done super well since the group stage to be honest, but I have many options off the bench tonight and being able to pick Robben or Messi as captain is not a bad place to be in!

I take it a lot of you had a good score last except Cookie, bad luck mate.
I had Hummels, Boatang, Lahm, Kroos, Muller and a punt on Benard that didn’t quite work, it grabbed me 76
Still have Cillessen, Blind, de Vrij, Sneijder, Mascherano, Gago, Robben and Messi to go but haven’t got room for one so Gago will probably stay on the bench.
Muller was my capt with 26, anyone think it’s worth the gamble moving the armband to Robben or Messi?

Once it’s an actual contest then i’ll be happy. As crazy as last night’s game was, it was awful to see a World Cup semi-final being finished after 25 minutes. I’m all for big scores and serious hammerings but at this stage of this tournament, i’d prefer to see great games instead of walkovers.
Holland v Argentina will be a great match i think. I can see it going to extra-time. Argentina to nick it.

Hi Kop. I’m definitely glad the Germans went through but the way it went down was disappointing, for me. I thought it was shocking that a national team like Brazil could fall apart after just one goal. Whatever about Neymar, the lack of Silva was the real killer. No leadership in the team at all.

Well I got 53 last night which was really rubbish, will be 42 after subs tonight I think. That puts me and NiN neckaneck in our Semi. (unless he hasn’t made subs yet, please say you haven’t) All to play for tonight, Captain choice is really tough.
