FPL Deadline Day Transfers

Welcome to Fantasy Football Deadline Day Transfers. Deadline Day was a strange day to say the least. There we were fully expecting a domino effect of expensive deals with Alexis Sanchez, Philippe Coutinho, Riyad Mahrez and Virgil van Dijk all expecting to leave clubs, while the Diego Costa stand-off may be sorted and there was speculation aplenty with many other names expecting to be cashing a fat signing-on fee. In the end the day fell flat, none of the aforementioned players moved and will feel disappointed at the outcome, though it should be emphasised that the Spanish transfer window remains open until midnight tonight (Friday), so it’s possible that Coutinho, Mahrez and Costa could still technically move.

So, enough of the nearly men, what of the players who did engineer a move. Let’s have a brief look through at those most likely to influence our FPL thinking.

The biggest deal of the day saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain turn down a move to Chelsea in favour of Liverpool for £35mln. Quite where The Ox fits into Klopp’s plans remains to be seen – presumably he has moved with assurances that he will get game time and with the speculation that he doesn’t want to play wing back (the alleged reason he turned down Chelsea), the implication is that he will be fitted somewhere into Liverpool’s midfield – competing with the likes of Henderson, Can, Wijnaldum and Coutinho (assuming he stays!). Priced at 6mln in FPL, The Ox is cheaper than Wijnaldum and more expensive than Can and Henderson and may well prove a decent squad option for Liverpool but for FPL managers it is likely a wait and see as there will surely be plenty of rotation once the Champions League starts in a couple of weeks.

Having missed out on Chamberlain, Chelsea moved to buy Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater. Drinkwater arrives from Leicester and will be competing with Kante, Bakayoko and Fabregas for a spot in the middle of the park, but his FPL standing is limited and he’ll be ignored by most. Zappacosta is a right footed defender and will likely compete with Victor Moses for the right wing back role – the Italian is not dissimilar to Marcos Alonso in his attacking prowess and is thought to be a better crosser than Alonso and will also want to compete with Alonso for some free kicks. His price of 6mln sees him considerably cheaper than Alonso, Azpilicueta, Moses and Cahill and if he can make the RWB place his own he could be a smart way into the Blues defence.

Spurs beefed up their squad with the hires of Serge Aurier and Fernando Llorente. Aurier’s arrival will disappoint Trippier owners – at best Trippier will suffer rotation, at worst he will again play second fiddle on the right side of defence. Aurier is a controversial character, but a better defender than Tripper so one would assume the ex-PSG man will be Poch’s no.1 – his opening price of 6mln seems to suggest so anyway and while Danny Rose remains out, Ben Davies remains the preferred play for a Spurs defender, due to his price, lack of competition at present and impressive attacking stats. Llorente has been brought in to provide cover for Harry Kane and could impact on Kane’s minutes – thus far Pochettino has had little choice but to play Kane for the full 90mins but with Llorente now on board there is the chance that the August-hating striker could be removed early if Spurs are winning comfortably – which we expect them to do now we’re in September.

Llorente’s departure from Swansea was only confirmed once Wilfried Bony had signed to return to the Welshies. Having suffered a miserable time at Man City and Stoke, Bony talks excitedly about being back at the Liberty, where he scored 34 goals in 70 games for the Swans. Sadly for Wilf he will no longer have Siggy to create for him so we wouldn’t rush to buy him quite yet. However his price of 6mln is certainly attractive if he can rediscover his old form and the Swans fixtures are certainly good. Swans manager Paul Clement used his contacts at Bayern to secure the services of Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches on a season long loan. Sanches moved to Munich for 30mln last summer and was thought to be one of Europe’s hottest young properties after an impressive European Championship. However, he struggled to settle and game time proved minimal and Clement moved efficiently to persuade the player to come to Wales for the season. FPL have priced him at 5mln and he’s certainly one to watch – Bayern are keen for him to play, so game time should be no issue and Clement has worked with him before so the hope will be he will settle soon and get his game back on track. The initial concern for FPL managers is that Sanches could impact on Tom Carroll’s starting place – this will need to be monitored, but if Sanches settles quickly and starts well it may well be that finding the extra 0.5 to upgrade Carroll to Renato may well be a smart move.

Crystal Palace finally secured the signing of Mamadou Sakho from Liverpool and having started the season with three straight defeats, the defender will likely be plunged straight into the starting line up as soon as he is 100% fit. However, Palace defenders have proved little value for a while now and we’d certainly recommend a watching brief at best before buying any!
