Live Match Chat Gameweek 37 FPL News
Welcome to Live Match Chat Gameweek 37 FPL News: We have finally arrived, the big double. We are not sure on this, but this could be the first time we have ever seen a DGW with at least one game for seven straight days. It is going to be pure excitement and what better way to kick off the double, on a Friday no less, than with two teams who have nothing to play for? We know, pretty exciting. Everton who are locked into 7th hosts Watford who are safe from the drop so as long they don’t concede an insane amount of goals in their last two games, and even then, they are probably still safe. That joy of a fixture is closely followed by The Baggies vs the soon to be champions Chelsea. Pulis and the gang will hopefully make an appearance from the retreat they have been at since late February to see the CFC lads awkwardly hug and kiss Conte as they clinch the title.
Saturday brings us five fixtures. We start with a lunch time affair between City and Leicester. City will be looking to leap frog LFC and get away from the hard chasing Gunners who are making a late charge for their 4th place trophy. That is followed by three 3pm matches. WARNING!! Even your missus will know that these games are sh*te. So just take some time and do what she wants done in this time slot. The Cherries and Burnley square off in what is known in FPL circles as “That game King plays in”… Boro plays their last home game before heading back to where they belong when Southampton visits, and Sunderland unfortunately have to play their games out and take the pitch vs a Swansea team sitting just outside the relegation zone. The late game has The Stokies looking to do us (and probably them) a favour and end Arsenal’s dreams of Champions League qualification.
Sunday has 3 fixtures in store. Palace tangle with Hull at lunch time, The Tigers will be desperate to take something from this as they continue their battle with Swansea for the last safe spot. That is followed by West Ham facing off against a Liverpool side who can almost taste the Champions League, similar to when they could almost taste the title in 13/14. The last fixture sees Spurs vs United, two teams who if results go as expected in the previous games really won’t have much to play for here.
Monday only carries one game. Chelsea and who knows what XI if they are already champions welcome in Watford as both teams complete their DGW.
Tuesday brings us two fixtures and the second game in the GW for all four teams also. Arsenal and hero Arsene Wenger host United legend David Moyes and the soon to be disappearing Black Cats. No worries though, Sunderland fans can rest easy knowing they will have a local team to still support in the Premier League as Newcastle make their way back. In the second fixture of the day City get West Brom, who if you were following earlier, you will already know are well and truly on vacation.
Wednesday also has one fixture. Saints tangle with Man United. The team sheet for this will be interesting to say the least. That is followed by the end of the game-week on Thursday when Spurs travel to Leicester.

67 points with a possible 14 players to play depending on rotations, i am expecting a better return this round of fixtures simply due to my defence not scoring anything besides Davies.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :big-lol:
Going through last night’s comments has certainly cheered me up on this dull Monday morning. Init Sir, I tip my hat to, you deserve a knighthood! Truly astonishing detective work. Such a shame as that rank could have been improved significantly with the help from the team here…. Init remind me never to get in your bad books! ha
Swirly – I just nearly spat my water out at that comparison!
Ronaldo – that’s very honourable of you and congrats, that’s great news on your baby girl!
Moving swiftly on, yesterday was a bad day at the ML office – Now 3 points above 2nd and 18 above 3rd so it is indeed twitchy bum time. Praying Alonso plays tonight and Hazard doesn’t.
Can’t believe you weren’t around last night man! I was just thinking Milburn is gonna love this shit when he reads through it all!!
I know, gutted I missed all the excitement haha! Certainly made for good reading this morning, was actually LOL’ing.
What do you reckon of the apparent new kit Milburn? Like the shirt itself, would have liked the sponsor to look better as it looks a bit cheap, even a different colour say orange or something…
https://www.reddit.com/r/NUFC/comments/6b8vsr/apparent_new_kit_leak/
It’s the first Puma one I’ve liked to be honest Rosco. I think a lot of the others have looked cheap but the special 125 year badge they’ve done helps this to be a bit more retro.
And with regards to the sponsor, anything is better than Wonga. I just hope this Chinese company pays as much for sponsorship as they do for players these days!
Morning all,
Has this weekend shed any light on whether it’s better to keep the WC until later on in the season or use it early? And I guess the second part of that question is 15DGWs the right way forward? Evidence, on this season suggests not with many issues sorted or virtually sorted going into the GW as well as SGW players who we knew had decent fixtures performing well (Jags, King, Llorente, Benteke, Zaha, Coutinho).
Easy to speak after the event of course and the game-week still has many games to play…..but interested to hear if your DGW experience has led to different plans to next season??
Morning Cookie,
I still think ideally it is best to postpone the use of the WC until these latter stages of the season but it also comes down to how an individual’s season is going. For instance I was having an appalling first half of the season and had a handful of injuries, suspensions and uncertainties over game time to deal with. By using it early it’s enabled me to turn my season around to some extent.
Regarding the 15 DGWs I think it depends on whether or not the fixtures are attractive or not, often as FPL managers we can be seduced just because it’s a DGW as opposed to someone with a SGW and more chance of scoring points. You obviously don’t want to tear your team apart for the following fixtures either.
So yes, I still think it is the most logical strategy; fixtures permitting.
Morning Milburn,
as you say though, with a wildcard the temptation is so huge to chuck in 15DGWs and I completely get that. And also I spose there is no definitve answer as each season is different: ie next season, the top 3 could all still be fighting for the title, releagtion may not be sorted, top 4 etc etc etc meaning less rotation…..
Cookie
I don’t know.
Hope that helps. 😉
Morning Cookie,
I’ll echo what Milburn said in that if your team is a mess then theres little point in sitting on a WC when you could change things around and have a considerably better team over a longer period of time. I think this comes with a caveat in that you do then need to plan for the DGW’s as you won’t have the luxury that others have who retain their WC. I think Pancho is a good example of how to do this as looking at his team this week its pretty much as good as most of us who have WC in 35/36.
I think the above is imperative, my main rival in my ML used his WC early and he started to chop down my lead and went from being around 150 points behind down to 30 points…however he didn’t plan and his team in the last 2 weeks has really suffered and that 30 point lead has jumped to an almost 180+ lead which will only get higher this week i’d imagine.
I have always had the opinion that 15 DGW’s isn’t imperative but its a lottery to pick SGW players who will perform. Someone like Josh king is a no-brainer as his price is so good but had you kept someone like Coutinho his price is at a restrictive point where you would have to sacrifice a big hitter like Alli or Erik with a DGW. Then it just comes down to playing the odds that one player with 2 games will outscore a player with 1 game. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t but I still feel its the right way to play it.
I’m not convinced that its imperative to play the BB in a DGW but again it comes down to spreading your chances so whilst you may hit lucky playing it in a normal week there is more chance it will pay off when your players have 2 games. That said at present my BB would have been much for beneficial had I played it last week!!
Rosco, thanks for the shoutout I agree that saving the WC is helpful, but playing it “early” (GW 27) I was able to fix about 6 issues I had in my team. I feel I had done it over time with extra transfers that’s 24 pts in hits and way fewer points from the players I had doing the transfers slowly. I figure somewhere around a 50 point swing from using it then, which is likely the difference between being being where I currently am at 10,400 and bein somewhere around 75-100k.
All this to say, I think there comes a time when dealing with issues in your team is more imperative.
On BB, I think it can work in the huge DGW when the DGW players are from good teams and they have something to play for. Without both of those things lining up it can be … well … you can end up with a lot of 0,1, 2 player scores like many of us this week.
Morning Cookie, for what it’s worth, my take on it is this –
This seasons has been hampered somewhat due to the teams involved and the uncertainty over line-ups, because of both injuries (Arsenal) / rotation (Spurs / Man Utd) and just the general oddness of stuff like the whole landscape changing in the middle of the DGW itself (Chelsea / Spurs situation).
The team mix dictates what squad you can afford to put together. Most benches have ended up being weak and full of punts. Throw in a Palace as a DGW team, for example, and it all looks very different as you have some cheaper viable options to enable a better spread.
It’s difficult to judge because we only get so much warning. Had you shown me my squad, as it is now with a BB, at say Christmas, and asked is that worth waiting on I’d probably say no. But we had no way of knowing that.
All that said I’d still wait it out next season for sure. This seasons has been a strange one due to a lot of odd circumstances all coming together at once. That’s unlikely to happen again. So whilst last seasons was probably the best example of why you wait for it, this seasons probably wasn’t. Looking at the others in my ML – they pretty much all went early with theirs, but I’m not seeing any to whom that has ultimately been a big advantage.
Morning to you Cookie!
Some wise words from the other guys already.
Perhaps it is still to early to make a definitive call on the WC timing for this season. It will be easier by Thursday. We have already seen some players missing out from Soton, tonight could be the turn of Chelsea (okay, I am hoping it is the turn of Alonso I would also like Rose to come back quickly!!)
That said, I think a lot depends on the week in which the major DGW falls. I think, but may be wrong, that in some previous seasons this happened earlier and therefore, before there was certainty about relegation and titles etc. This reduced the risk of rotation and meant that there were some very big DGW scores in some of those past seasons.
The other important point that has already been made is the state of one’s team at any given moment from New Year onwards. If it is a mess in early January then sometimes the best solution is to use the WC. There really is little point staring at 6-7 players that you don’t want and then only losing them over 3 GWs. There are a lot of GWs to make points and you can still prepare for the DGWs with transfers. I think you went early this time didn’t you? Maybe you have a better perspective on that approach.
Bottom line – no two seasons are the same and the teams involved in DGWs are often a bit of a mixed bag. I think there is no “absolute” right strategy, at least not before we all have the benefit of 20-20 hindsight
Great question Cookie. All the others above made very valid arguments so I won’t paraphrase!
I remember a couple of years back I hit the 200 point score in a DGW – this year it won’t happen. Every year is so different and using past history to try to predict next year is like chasing that magic pot of gold under the rainbow me thinks!
All in all – FPL is one hell of a big gamble and luck is such a huge part of it. With that luck you need to plan a bit and you have a recipe for success. People who don’t plan and have some luck don’t go too far. In my ML I have 2 or 3 guys that have been so lucky until January with their choices and were above me – but thanks to a bit of planning I am back to top spot and sitting on an OR of 23 080 and I kinda saved a poor looking season at first. So all in all: use and abuse of that FPL luck we sometimes get! 😉
Afertoon Cookie – I love these queries you make to make us talk!
I’m a strong supporter of the late WC+BB combo. The idea of being able to create a fresh set of the best XI players you can get to play twice in that crucial stage of the season (especially ML wise) is all I need to go through any rough patches during the January-May period. Sure, a few hits may be required (especially if you deployed your first one early) but only a team in real shambles (I mean real real shambles) would make me go away from that strategy.
As for the SGW players as opposed to a XV squad of dgwers I must say I’m a sucker for having 30 players bringing in the points (Ok, maybe 28 + Anichebe). Last year and this one, to some extent, have proven there’s value in sgw players but it has also highlighted that said sgwers are expensive players (Alli, Kane, last year, Coutinho, this one) which means that had you gone for them nobody knows how weakened your WC+BB would’ve been. You can also get easily sucked into keeping a sgw player with a promising fixture and get Lukakued… Also, we must bear in mind that this strategy may or may not enhance your pts for the week before the dgw which depends very much of its fixtures which makes the seasons incomparable in that respect. This year, for example, gw36 was good for dgw teams in 37, but I think I remember well if I say last year’s weren’t. Being able to afford that flexibility is key imo.
All in all there may be no correct answer to your questions but if it’s a simple one of “play early vs keep it for the dgws” and “keeping sgwers vs XV squad” I’d lean for the later in both cases!
Hi All,
Just wanted to say Thank You all for welcoming me in the FPL247 forum. This is the 1st time I have played with such attention. I love reading the articles and banter on this site. Will be sad as we approach the final game week. Managed to pick up 70 points so far with potentially 9 to play, currently ranked in at 1223 overall which I am delighted with. I wish you all a strong end to the season and look forward to the next!
Big Love
Neilos
Thanks Neilos, and the same to you my friend. That’s a great ranking, hopefully you can push into the 3 digits by the end of the season.
I wouldn’t be too sad, there’ll still be plenty of people on here over the summer discussing transfers and promoted teams etc
Anything that can pass the time as we anxiously await the price list for players next season being released. Oh and then there’ll be about 10,00,000 rate my teams, half of which will be Mitros 😉
Milburn,
I think you are underestimating Mitro’s share
+1 😉
Great rank man well played!
Looking like top 1k is a realistic target buddy which is epic!!
Reckon you need a gravitar going on now that you’re part of the gang!
Milburn, Rosco and Cookie – Thanks Guys for the kind words – i’ll be on over the summer too lol – Mrs thinks i’m bonkers but can’t help it.
Great to be part of this family! We should set up nights out over beers and discuss FPL strategies !
#FPLFamily
I can sympathise on the Mrs front!! I spend so much time and energy on it, she even knows when I’ve had a bad FPL GW as in her words ‘I’m no pleasure to be around’… haha to be fair I used to be like that when Newcastle lost but I’ve became a lot more tolerant of that and seem to pour my emotions more into FPL now as thats actually something I have control over!!
Neilos,
It’s been great seeing you appear on the boards this season. Congrats on your brilliant rank, that’s superb my friend. As Milburn has said, we’ll still be around and open over the summer for some aimless chat, some fantasy MLS and fantasy cricket. And before we know, it’ll be July, the pre-season friendlies will start and we’ll be searching for next season’s secret weapons!
Great rank Neilos. Well done.
That’s a brutal rank you got going there Nelios. Even more impressive if this your 1st ‘serious’ season. Well done mate.
ARSENAL team news for tomorrow: Alexis Sanches to have a fitness test with Wenger saying, ‘y’day it didn’t look too good, but with him, he is so desperate to play.’ Kos has a ‘small problem’, Gibbs is available but Ox remains out.
Holding should play?
Yeah of course
Mitro, apologies – Gibbs is available, though I suspect Holding still plays with Kos being a doubt – not sure why they would risk Kos. But who knows?!
I have edited my post above, for those that read it later.
Cheers mate
Is Spurs’ extension still to be called White Hart Lane?
They’re only moving it a couple of hundred yards so I’d like to think that they will for that ‘istoric value. It’ll be weird going to Wembley for the league games.
Yeah they don’t have a great record at Wembley do they?
Ahaha sarcasm at its best
😉 fully deserved after that ridiculous ceremony after the game yesterday. They’re basically having their old council house knocked down to build a mansion with grounds, outhouses and a stable for the donkey. And they get upset saying goodbye to the council house.
Goodness me, I thought West Ham was bad enough.
I don’t remember Arsenal going through this ridiculous romaticism when they left Highbury, but I could be wrong.
