Pre-season Friendly round up

The Pre-season Friendly Hub Part 2

Photo 27-07-2014 12 12 26Pre-season preparations are now well and truly underway. All Premier League teams have played and depending on where you are in the world and what your sports subscription is, you may have had the opportunity to view first hand, a number of them. Be aware though that most managers see the first two or three games as purely an exercise to blow away the cobwebs and to get the joints moving once again. This is the reason a lot of the time you will see 22 (or more) players playing in a game. In short, you shouldn’t concern yourself if one of your fantasy picks only played 45 minutes in a game. This is not a reliable indication of manager intent or a forewarning to the season. Usually. The US seems to be the market everyone is trying to crack this pre-season and we know a number of site members have been lucky enough to go to some of these games. Manchester City, Manchester Utd, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City are all in the world’s latest soccer (sic) market. Heck, even Arsenal nipped out for five minutes to face the Red Bulls last night. World Cup fever has caught stateside and the Premier League teams are dipping their bread in.
Newcastle and West Ham are in Oceania, with contrasting opening results and Chelsea are back-packing around Europe, whilst the rest seem to be preparing closer to home.
Today/Yesterday has been a massive day of action with no less than nine Premier League clubs continuing their preparations. Here is a rundown on the games involving Premier League teams from Wednesday to last night…

CONCLUSIONS
HOT:
Photo 27-07-2014 12 12 52Man Utd started the van Gaal era impressively with a 7-0 win against LA Galaxy. Granted this was only an MLS side but any 7-0 deserves some credit. It would have been pleasing for Wayne Rooney owners to see him scoring so early (four goals in two games including sticking away two penalties) and they’ll be hoping it continues to the start of the season, especially as Man Utd. have some really attractive opening fixtures, as is well documented.
Luke Shaw appears to be lined up for the wide left position of a five in midfield as Man Utd’s default 3-5-2 formation. This in essence, makes him prospectively, the first and biggest, Out Of Position (OOP) player this season.
Ander Herrera began his Man Utd. career by dictating the LA Galaxy match and assisted two goals for Ashley Young (no mean feat!) and he may be a more attractive player in fantasy terms then first anticipated. A midfield destroyer he isn’t and never was, he is a classy player who although may play in a deep role, can unpick defences and may continue his assist scoring into the season.
The question is will Robin van Persie be used sparingly at the beginning of the season due to the burden able to be shared between Rooney, Mata, Valencia, Shaw and Herrera?
Enjoy discussing . . .

NOT
Photo 27-07-2014 12 10 54West Ham Utd. have now lost both their games against ‘A’ league opposition, in the form of Wellington Phoenix and Sydney FC. OK, so it is pre-season, they have travelled a long way but you would have to be flag these two results as ‘warning signs’.
Andy Carroll has now been ruled out through injury (again). This time for a reported four months so their main striker being out and it has been one heck of a trip for Sam Allardyce and his men. Add to this the hullabaloo surrounding who he actually wants to sign / retain (Ravel Morrison) and can’t, and who he didn’t (Mauro Zarate) and did. This is all alleged of course but there usually is no smoke without fire.
Big Sam has already agreed with the owners that to appease them he will finish in the top half of the table minimum. Also, and to appease the Hammers’ support, he has promised a more attractive style of football. A return to the ‘West Ham Way’ (whatever that may be, like some, I have no idea).
The pressure is already on Big Sam and it could be argued that he now needs results (even though it is pre-season) against Schalke 04 and Malaga in Germany next weekend.
Hope you are enjoying these reviews and happy tinkering to all . . .

Hmmm, I have Terry, Hazard and Costa in my team. Is that overkill. Especially since I also have DDG, Mata and Rooney. 😛

Owww ffs. SHould be. Is that OVERKILL???????????????????????? Question mark!

For no RMTs this year, you sure are giving a lot away Raz 😉

      • Raziel says:

Lol Calvin. Not doing RMT”s though. But shite, you are right. HAHA. Aaah well.

You’re right, giving away too much. Will still make a lot of changes. Anyway, just afraid I’m going overkill on United/Chelsea and have almost no Pool/City/Arsenal coverage.

      The B says:

Nothing is overkill if you are playing by the fixtures.

      • Raziel says:

Yeah. But knowing Mourinho he might start really conservative with his team. Not giving away much. Then 27 million spend on Chelsea seems a bit much. Guess I have to wait and watch some more preseason games.

Hmmm, I hope van Ginkel will do better this season. I see he gets a lot of playing time in the preseason fixtures. What he needs after such a bad injury.

      • Raziel says:

Aaah yes, I remember last year I think everybody took a punt on Hazard. DGW and really easy fixtures. But it was only after 7 GW’s he started to score some serious points. Think that made me hate him for the rest of the season (because I had him the first 6 GW’s, HAHAHA).

Haven’t got a doubles partner yet any takers scored about 2500 last season so need someone around the same

Mannone, Speroni – assuming Mannone is first choice

    Terry, Davies,Caulker, Clyne, Colochini
    Sidwell, Ramsey, Gardner, Mata, Siggy
    Costa, Rooney, Dzeko

Playing the squad card. Not sure if go this approach. Thoughts?

      Raziel says:

Well, you can’t assume shit at the moment. I’d only pick Mannone if Panti was my second goalie. 😉

Defense looks decent. Instead of Coloch I have Janmaat, but he got to root for the Dutchies. 😛

Uncertain about Sidwell. Gardner? Like Ramsey, Mata, Siggy. Also like Costa and Rooney, Pellegrini today said Jovetic will get a much bigger role which drives me away fromt he City forwards.

      • TheDreamers says:

Hi Raz – had Janmaat, then thought might wait til he settles first.

You are questioning who is Gardner ( Craig) or questioning the pick?

        • Raziel says:

Well, I like Siggy. But als Gardner and Sidwell? Bit risky. Also, West Brom is shite and he plays central right? 5,5m is not cheap.

        • TheDreamers says:

Ya both Sidwell n Gardner play central. Both tend to get some goals though. That being said, both are also at new clubs.

        • Raziel says:

If that’s the case I really don’t like it mate. That’s just my opinion though. I would want a balanced team everywhere. Where did all that money go? Personally I’d prefer it if you pick one 4,5m midfielder and one 4m defender. You have 1 superb defender (Terry) and 4 non-risk defenders. Ack, mehehe. Sorry. Maybe someone else can help here? Don’t want to be to critical. sad

        • TheDreamers says:

Just playing with another option. I threw it up here to get feedback. If I didn’t want criticism I shudnt have thrown it up. Will prob end up with 3 premium mids but evaluating an alternative.

        • Raziel says:

Ok, going to have to take a closer look now at your team. Nobody else is helping ya out. Let’s see:
Mannone (risk) – Speroni (5m) That’s 9,5m spend on goalies (DDG-Myhill same price)
Terry (king) – Davies (good) – Caulker (again QPR?) – Clyne (Sot is risky atm) – Colo (Newcastle could do really well this season, in the back I don’t know yet)

Sidwell (I say no) – Ramsey (should do well) – Gardner (5,5m, HELL NO) – MATA (HELL YEAH) – Siggy (great option at very low price)

Costa (looks good to me but new so always risk, but one I’m willing to take)
Rooney (might do really well under van Gaal, maybe better than RvP)
          Dzeko (risky city)

So many question marks in your team. I really don’t see how you came up with this one, lol. Don’t want to hurt your feelings or anything. Nobody else is giving feedback so unsure if I’m crazy.

        • TheDreamers says:

Had the std. Terry at back, Silva, Mata n Ramsey in mid. Costa n Rooney up front. Ok fillers around them. Will still prob end up with most of them.

        • Raziel says:

You have an STD? Sorry mate. 😛

        • Raziel says:

Like I said, I would always want 11 strong core players. You can have that even with the players you want. However, you need 1 4,5m mid (which could do just as well if not better than Gardner) and one 4,0m defender. That would give you money to spend on a better fourth mid and also get a good defense.

You can do better with the fillers, that’s all I’m saying.

    • 105.2
      Calvin Clyne says:

      Sorry Dreamers, missed this earlier.

Monitor Mannone, like you have said. Do the same with Coloccini as Williamson may turn out to be a better option. I’m not convinced that Caulker is the best option – there are others for 5.0 like Davies and Ward that are likely to score higher, and if you fancy QPR then all the others are cheaper. And it pains me to say it haha, but I’d also hold off on Clyne until we see just what the state of So’ton is come mid-August.

Attackers are all good apart from Gardner – not sure he kicked a ball last season. Keep an eye out for a suitable replacement over the coming fortnight. Sidwell seems a bit punty, but by definition could therefore do well for you if he settles down quickly and gets decent game-time.
