Previous season in Premier League:
2009-10 season – 18th (relegated)

Burnley returned to the Premier League following their runners up spot in the Championship gaining an impressive 93 points. The Clarets last stay in the Premier League was in 2009/10 season when they famously beat Manchester United at Turf Moor, sadly soon after manager Owen Coyle moved to Bolton midway through the campaign and despite a gallant survival effort they were relegated. The Clarets outfit that returns to the Premiership may be the bookies favourites for the drop but in manager Sean Dyche you can be certain that they will not go down without a fight. Let’s take a look at their prospects from a fantasy point of view…

The Manager – Sean Dyche
Dyche, who is known as the “Ginger Mourinho” has previously managed Watford and spent some time on the England U21 backroom staff, will keep his players feet firmly on the ground in an effort to re-create what Crystal Palace did last season and remain in the Premiership. A straight talking and no nonsense type of manager, Dyche favours a 4-4-2 system, in last season’s Championship the Clarets used this formation in 40 of their 46 league games. In his 85 matches in charge of the Clarets he has a win ratio of 47%. Dyche has been actively involved in the transfer market this summer and has brought in some seasoned veterans to strengthen his squad. Fantasy Managers should note that Dyche is not one to tinker with his sides, in last season’s Promotion winning team ten players started 38 games or more, Goalkeeper Tom Heaton, along with Jason Shackell and David Jones started all 46 matches.

The Players

Let’s take a look at some of the players from last season and then some new arrivals-

GOALKEEPER –
Tom Heaton-4.5mln. The former Man United youngster was Dyche’s first signing for the club after arriving from Bristol City last summer. He should be nailed-on to feature in a significant number of games barring injury. Heaton played every one of his side’s league matches and was instrumental in Burnley’s impressive defence. He will offer fantasy managers a good option as a back-up keeper.

[divider_1px]

DEFENDERS-
article-2441475-1871A54400000578-694_634x366Kieran Trippier-5mln. This highly-rated right-back is likely to be a popular option as a cheapish defender. His set-piece ability and delivery helped him return an impressive 12 assists last season. (top assisting defender in the FPL last season had 8) He could be a consideration in some managers squads.

Michael Duff-4mln. This veteran centre-half played the vast majority of Burnley’s season, though remains to be seen whether Dyche will allow him as much game time in the Premiership.

Jason Shackell-4.5mln. Ever-present at the heart of the Clarets defence, Shackell was snapped up from Derby back in 2012 and has established himself as a key figure in Dyche’s strong backline.

Ben Mee-4.5mln. Mee is the first-choice left-back under Dyche and his three assists last season were overshadowed by Trippier’s tally. He will most likely remain an integral part of the starting 11 but is unlikely to offer fantasy managers the best return in points.

[divider_1px]

MIDFIELDERS-
Michael Kightly-5mln. He produced 5 goals and 6 assists during his loan spell before he completed his move from Stoke in the off season. Classed as a midfielder but operates as a winger which could boost his appeal to fantasy managers.

Dean Marney-4.5mln. Marney was snapped up from Hull back in May 2010 – the central midfielder impressed with his several assists last season but let himself down though as he has a habit for picking up silly bookings and was suspended twice last season.

David Jones-4.5mln. The former Wigan midfielder arrived on a free transfer summer and immediately nailed down a regular starting role. Jones also takes a fair share corners to boost his appeal though probably not enough to make fantasy managers select him.

Scott Arfield-5mln. He was brought in on a free transfer from Huddersfield and was used initially as a sub for the first three matches before cementing his place in the starting 11, starting 42 of the following 43 league games. Possible differential potential.

[divider_1px]

ATTACKERS-
Sam Vokes – 5.5mln. The former Wolves frontman was a crucial part of the Clarets campaign last year until injury curtailed his season. Having already suffered from a long-term cruciate ligament injury in 2012/13 he had started last season in fine form, with penalty duties helping him find the net 20 times. Unfortunately Vokes sustained another serious knee ligament injury in March and is set to miss the start of the upcoming campaign, rumours suggest a December return. If and when he returns to action and depending on fitness he could make good differential.

41534Danny Ings – 6mln. The standout player for the Clarets last season he was duly voted Championship Player of the Year. Ings made his debut for England U21s in October last year and with Vokes sidelined through injury, looks set to be the Burnley forward of choice and at only 6m he could make a few managers sit up and notice. Rumours are abound that Ings is wanted by Southampton as a replacement for Rickie Lambert so watch the transfer news.

Ashley Barnes – 4.5mln. Barnes arrived from Brighton during the winter transfer window and his first 10 appearances for the Clarets came from of the bench. When Vokes was sidelined Barnes took his chance appearing in each of the final 11 Championship fixtures.

New Arrivals-
Dyche has strengthened his squad with six new arrivals this summer Michael Kightly, Matt Gilks, Marvin Sordell, Matthew Taylor, Steven Reid and striker Lukas Jutkiewicz have all completed their moves to Turf Moor. Journeymen pro’s like Taylor and Reid are already known to fantasy managers whilst Jutkiewicz will offer competition up front.

Fixtures
Burnley face a baptism of fire on opening day with a home fixture against Chelsea, the real Mourinho will be in town with his stars hoping to get their Premiership challenge off to a good start. Next up is Swansea away before Man Utd and LVG visit Turf Moor. If the Clarets get a point from these three fixtures they will be doing well.

Summary
Will Burnley stay up? Im not sure. Could they provide some scares to the opposition? Probably. Whatever happens and with Dyche in charge you can be sure that it will not be because of a lack of effort.

      NIN says:

GunnerLuf – Odd GK picks, iffy fixtures and even iffier teams. Defence looks very light to me, as does the midfield. Strikers are the business but probably overspent on. I’d pick two of your 10m+ players to downgrade, a lot, and use the extra £ to improve the defence and midfield.

      • Calvin Clyne says:

NIN to be fair he has a Chelsea, Arsenal, and three cheap rotating defenders. That’s not light, that’s pretty standard.

        • NIN says:

I think it’s light. Luis isn’t nailed on for a start yet. Southampton have been gutted and besides, Hooiveld showed last season that he wasn’t able for the league (a couple of shitty pre-season goals changes nothing) and isn’t first team anyway. Wisdom isn’t nailed either and the jury is still out on West Brom defence. Add to that two iffy GK picks…. it’s well light, for me.

I see Southampton players still have pretty low ownership. They have a great run of fixtures after the first game against Liverpool, so some easy money could be made if your willing to stack up on them. I’m looking at Clyne, Boruc, and Tadic right now, no room for Pelle. Thoughts?

      PvR

Be wary with Boruc – Southampton are bidding for Celtic’s Fraser Forster. Think they will be back in with another bid after the first one was rejected.

I agree though – I think they have a fantastic run and I am having Chambers and Davis I reckon.

      • PvR says:

Righto, I’ll keep an eye on things with Boruc, thanks mate.
I guess many don’t think they will be able to play as well as they did last year after losing so much talent. We’ll have to see.

      NIN says:

Everything that made them a good side is either gone, or will be gone soon. Shaw, Lallana and Lambert have moved on and Lovren will move soon too i reckon. Add to that Pochettino jumping ship and the arrival of Koeman (who wont last the season) and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. I think they’re in big trouble this season and am avoiding their players completely. And then there’s Rodriguez, probably their best player now, who’s badly injured and wont be right for a couple of months yet, maybe more.

      • PvR says:

Yeah NIN, I completely see what your saying, and your probably right unfortunately. But you know me… always like to take a risk 😉

      • inittowinit says:

Howdy NIN, I’m pretty certain I’m going to get Tadic regardless. He looks quality and he’s on set pieces. Totally get what you are saying but I think they’ll be ok in all honesty. Koemans no mug.

        • NIN says:

Hi init. I don’t fancy them at all this season. At 7.5m i think you could do better than Tadic. De Jong is 0.5m cheaper and Newcastle have some tasty fixtures post gwk1 too. 0.5m more gets you Eriksen. 1.5m less gets you Siggy/Puncheon. I’d prefer any of those to Tadic.

Watch him score a hat-trick vs Liverpool now. You know how it goes. Haha.

    RedVT says:

For people trying to get some Chelsea defensive cover, who do you guys think are safe options and most likely nailed to start? I’m guessing Terry and Ivanovic are safe bets to play most meatches, but what about Cahill and Azpi? Where will Filipe Luis fit in and who do you think will make way for him if he were to get a run in the side?

    • 88.1

      RedVT

I think the preferred four would line up as:

      Ivanovic Cahill Terry Luis.

Chelsea usually stick with the same back four and I think Azpilicueta could be used from the bench at the start of the season.

I’m between Luis and Cahill just now and thinking of Cahill as he is a threat at set plays.

      • RedVT says:

Thanks GP. I currently have Cahill in my first draft but wanted to be sure he was likely to keep his place. Do you like JT at all for the same money? I’ve always rated Ivanovic but I really need that .5 million to spend elsewhere.

    • 88.2
      NIN says:

JT is probably the only one who’s worth the money. Maybe Courtois actually.

      • Calvin Clyne says:

NIN that is actually a thought, I could go DDG and Luis to Courtois and Shaw and just save myself the headache. One to ponder.

        • NIN says:

Chelsea coverage is driving me up the wall. Which players to pick? How many to pick? Best positions/spread to go with? It’s all too much.

      • RedVT says:

Thanks NIN. He actually seems a halfway decent value at 6.5 if he performs like he did last season. I’m just not sure if he’s got the legs to play as much as he did and I don’t wanna spend that kind of money on anyone who isn’t a lock to play. But at the same price as Cahill he’s definitely tempting.

        • NIN says:

I don’t see JT missing too many games, Red. He only sat out two last season and they were both because of slight knocks, if i remember correctly.

      Calvin Clyne says:

This has been bothering me all day Red. If I had to bet, I would say Luis, Cahill, Terry, Ivanovic would be the starting line-up, but don’t forget that Azpil is actually a RB although he played LB last season. People have disregarded this, saying it’s not a problem as he is not likely to displace Ivan, which is true, but I can also quite feasibly see Ivan moving to the centre as there would now be a competent RB. I think Ivan is a far stronger player than Cahill, and can quite easily picture the latter sitting out a few games. Also Terry is not getting any younger, so could also be rested from time to time, with Cahill and Ivan playing in the centre.

A lot of this has just come from my over-thinking it probably, but in my mind no-one is safe! Can’t wait to definitively hear otherwise so I can put that dead-cert in my team..

      • RedVT says:

Yeah, I agree Calvin. I’m definitely going to build my defense around one of them, it’s just a matter of picking the right one! If they were all priced the same I’d go with Ivan, but I’ll probably need to go with Cahill or JT to save the .5 million.

        • makeya says:

I’d go JT (am going JT). Azpil and Ivan are going to battle it out for the spot off the bench at the start of the season. JT is looking strong in the friendlies and has been attacking strong.
