Trends From The Top Game-week 12
Welcome to this week’s edition of Trends From the Top. For this week’s publication, I join your from the lovely city of Sofia, Bulgaria where games air 7 hours later than my standard NYC match times! (Well it’s actually the same time although I am in a different time zone). It was certainly an interesting weekend as Chelsea took on its 7th loss of the season and chatter continues to focus on topics such as potential relegation, firings and signings. It is important to see how this has effected or impacted the league leaders if at all and to see what insights and trends these fantasy football gurus have in regards to such happenings. Let’s dive in a bit to take a closer look at our top 10.
Who was the most captained player by the top ten for Game-week 12?
This week, 40% of the top ten managers selected Vardy as captain (18 points), 30% Bony (2 points), 20% Ozil (16 points) and 10% Sanchez (10%). What is interesting here is the fact that 3 of the top 10 selected Bony, yet he is only owned by 6% of fantasy managers.

Who were the most popular players chosen by the top ten for Game-week 12?
Goalkeepers:
For this past gameweek 40% of the top managers selected Hart while 30% had Cech, 20% had Butland and 10% played de Gea.
Defenders:
This week we saw 16 defenders make the cut for top managers. Interestingly enough, Kolarov (50%) was the only defender with an ownership rate of 50% or higher. Smalling came in at 40% while Kompany, Clyne and Koscielny were the next most popular picks with 20% ownership followed by Moreno, van Dijk, Stones, Creswell, Azpilicueta, Dawson, Dann, Sagna, Zouma, Bertrand, and Monreal each with 10%.
Midfielders:
When you look at midfielders, the top 10 managers had 13 different picks with several getting only 10% of the vote such as Tadic, Mata and Couthino. Mahrez was the most popular pick with 100% ownership followed by Ozil at 60%, Sanchez at 50%, Payet at 40%, Yaya Toure, De Bruyne and Ayew each with 30%, and finally Mane, Wijnaldum and Barkley each with 20%.
Forwards:
This week, the front line consisted of 8 picks among the top managers which again seems to indicate that such spots are not yet solidified and/or ever evolving or changing as needed. Vardy came in with 90% while Lukaku was the next popular pick as he received 60%. Martial was selected by 40% of the top managers with Bony and Pelle receiving 30%, Kane and Ighalo receiving 20% and Gomis coming in at 10%.
In summation, the Must-Haves for top managers for game-week 12 were not many. They were Kolarov, Mahrez, Vardy, Sanchez, Lukaku and Ozil as they all had an ownership rate of 50% or higher.

What are some other interesting findings regarding our top leaders?
– 4 of the top players are new to the top 10.
– Our leader received only 40 points for GW 12 (5 points below the average) and has deployed ALL chips including his wildcard.
– Our leader started this season in 55,554th place and has held the top spot for the past 3 game-weeks.
– Our current leader finished 706,351 for the 2014/2015 season.
– Struthious D, currently in second place, has held one of the top 2 positions for the past 5 game-weeks and has a better opportunity to maintain such lead when compared to our #1 leader as he has only utilized his bench boost chip.
– Our 2nd top leader has played fantasy football for the past 9 seasons and his best finish was 74,308.
– Our 2nd top leader achieved only 36 game points for game-week 12 which was 9 points below the average of 45.

Other interesting facts:
– The average score for game-week 12 among the top 10 was 57.7 points which is a meager 12.7 points above average for the week.
– England maintains the lead for having the most players in the top 10 but barely. This week 30% of our leaders were from England followed by Australia at 20%, Ireland at 20%, and Scotland, South Africa and Canada each coming in with 10%.
– The average team value was £104m with £107.5m being the highest team value and £103.1m being the lowest value.
– 24 points separates 1st place from 10th.
Best of luck in Gameweek 13!

Is absolutely no one here considering Hazard as a Payet replacement? Look at the fixtures, two home games against Bournemouth and Norwich, and both of these teams concede happily. And after that, Leicester, Watford and Sunderland!
If Chelsea is gonna pick some points, and if Hazard has to regain his form, then this will be the best time.
But feckin Aguero is returning and he wont let me take a punt!
take the punt B you know you wanna
I definitely want to mate. Have a very strong feeling.
Stoke was a decent fixture and look what happened there.Chelsea look piss poor at the moment and I wouldn’t call any fixture “easy”for them right now.
Its either Hazard or Bolasie for me.
Agreed. Only Villa and B’mouth are below Chelsea in the form table. Until that changes i wouldn’t spend any FT’s on Chelsea players, even with a soft schedule.
Can anyone explain if Payet’s price will freeze? Thought it was automatic after a red flag? Guess I’ve got it wrong, who can sort it out for me.
It’s when a red flag is removed, not when it’s added.
A ha. So full on free-fall until it’s removed?
Correct
I dont know man. I have been playing FPL for more than 2 years and I still dont understand that rule.
0.3 per week until the flags eventually removed. He may drop 0.6 in the next 2 but that’ll be about it as his sales max out. Once he returns he’s price frozen for 8 days.
Cheers Innit. Knew the chicken would deliver. 😉
Evening guys, I wasn’t even going to look at my team this week but I’m thinking with Payet,Bony and Gomez on my injury list I’m thinking I’ll have to have a look should I play my WC now or just take a hit and do Payet out and Bony out
My team
If this was my team, I would definitely WC.
So many great players have already emerged such as Ozil and Lukaku, and you can even take a punt on Hazard/Willian.
You can simply field a strong squad for this GW and have enough cash in bank to afford Aguero the next GW.
Definite WC. Now or Never.
Evening Matt. Just had a look at your squad, and yeah, i would WC it during this break. You’ve got seven or eight issues there that could be sorted.
Cheers lads. That’s what I was thinking, how does this WC look??
Myself I d change
Ruddy,cedric,Nyom
to
Hennesey,Dijk,Ake
but tis marginal
Matt – Have a look at GW’s 14-16. You really going without Sanchez for them games? He’s a pure flat track bully so those are weeks i’d be looking at him as a capo shout. Kolarov and Nyom are the only defenders i’d keep (surely a United defender is preferable) and Ruddy out for Hennessey saves money and gets a better player. I wouldn’t have Coutinho either. Too early for Aguero too, for me.
Cheers NIN, them fixtures have just changed my mind on Sanchez but it leaves me a headache for KDB plus with Aguero I want to bring him in so I can make sure I have the funds for him.
NIN what do you think of this WC team with 1.2 left over.
Still a good few issues there, Matt, for me.
1. Double Stoke defence. Is it necessary?
2. Leicester defence. Not WC worthy by a long shot.
3. 4th mid is woeful.
4. Too early for Aguero.
I’d be looking at Bolasie in for Ali for a start. Drop Kolarov for a 5m ish defender and upgrade the other shit defenders. The Aguero pick is your call but, again, it’s not a move i would make this week.
Cheers NIN.
Do you think Lanzini could step up now that Payet is out. I could bring him in for Alli and save a bit of money.
With Payet out for so long, i’m not sure any WHU players look promising. Fixtures look a bit rough too.
Right Bolaise it is and that means I’ll rethink bringing in Bellerin to raise funds instead.
Simpson in for Huth (cheaper)
Koscielny in Kolarov out (rotation risk and not as tight at the back as they were)
Elliot in for Hennesey (Speroni on the way back to compete with Hen)
Surman in for Wanyama (both crap but you may find yourself wanting 3 good saints at some points)
Ward in for Woldscheid (risky this one, Ward didn’t start the last game)
Cabaye in for Alli (not convinced on Alli, Cabaye has good fixtures and is on set pieces)
+1. Don’t you have to use the first WC by the end of the year anyway. Prolly a good time to do it then to sort out Payet, Bonehead, Cedric, Gomez, and possibly Dawson (terrible fixtures). Players to look at: Lukaku/Kane/Ighalo, Ozil/Deulofue, Bertrand/Van Dijk/Rojo/Koscelny, etc.
Thanks Sanchez, didn’t think about Cedric out but will see what I can do now. Dawson is one that I will be getting rid off.
NIN,
I think I understand the rule. A naive followup. I’ve looked, and don’t see any immediate drop in Payet’s value. Is this something which will accelerate as we come to the end of the break week? If Aguero money is there, but would be threatened by a substantial drop, does one move now? (And the flip side-how many folks are sitting in the weeds, and how far back up can Aguero’s price go?) Maybe unanswerable questions, but I’d appreciate your advice.
Personally, I really hate these two-week sweat outs.
Hi Ki, Aguero won’t go dropping much now. Anyone who had him shipped him out 2 weeks ago. Anyone that’s somehow still got him won’t now be selling.
Payet will be dropping tonight and will reach the max GW drop of -0.3 by next week as people gradually log back in and sell him.
He’ll drop tonight, which doesn’t matter if you bought him on even BP. Some hit the button straight away, as soon as they limp off actually; others prefer to wait through price drops until day before the next game to calmly decide on the replacement allowing for injuries in various squads. (avoiding how Bellerin early buyers got burnt last week.)
Aguero is expensive and still sat on a healthy ownership, so his price will likely go slow.
Tends to get 20 or 30 minutes first game back too.
Thanks, Init and TT. Really helpful comments, both ways.
Payet will drop tonight for sure. Once Aguero makes an appearance of some kind i’d expect his price to rise. If he scores early then it will go through the roof very quickly.
Who are people thinking of bringing in for Payet? I have about 8.8m to spend
Mata, Ozil, Bolaise or Tadic. All good options for the coming weeks.
+1 + Deulofeu (maybe even add Willian)
Oh, i forgot about Deulofeu. Yeah him too. Wouldn’t go anywhere near Willian though.
Granted, more a decent (enough) differential (3.7% ownership) than ‘must have’ player, but has form, fixtures, and price (£6.8) on his side. 6 (crucial) goals and 3 assists in all competitions and gets into scoring positions pretty regularly. Sadly, the only in-form Chelski player at the mou, tho.
A player who gets the odd 7 or 8 point week is pretty much an awful differential. There’s no explosiveness from him, no consistency and no capo possibility. 5 of those 6 goals have been free kicks too – No chance he keeps that level of production up. Nobody can.
Wow I coudn’t wait and have already done my transfers lol, and that is -8 LOL ! Hoping KDB and Sanchez come through IB without any injury and Aguero plays against Pool
You couldn’t have played it any riskier if you tried! Madness
Haha I had 2 FT and was trying all the combinations since the GW ended, wasting my time on that and finally thought fuck this shit lemme do it now or I will go mad till IB 😉
Again, madness
