Defenders Capable of Fast Starts For 2021-22
As the Fantasy Premier League season draws closer, we take a look at defenders who could be set for electric starts to the campaign.
Looking at the early fixtures, there are a few standout players who could really hit the ground running and earn those valuable early points.
Robertson Set For Early Points Haul
With games against Norwich City and Burnley in their opening two games, Liverpool will be looking to rack up some early wins and clean sheets for the new Premier League campaign.
The Reds, who are 5/1 in the English Premier League Odds to win the title this term, are blessed with the talented Andrew Robertson at left-back. No defender earned more points in FPL last season, with the Scotland skipper racking up 161.
Liverpool sorely missed defensive duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries last season, but the pair are expected to start the new campaign. With a bit more steel in the heart of defence, Robertson can be expected to land a few more points for clean sheets this season. Robertson is not cheap at 7.0, but with his ability going forward, the Scot looks to be a great candidate for some significant early points.
Shaw to Build on Impressive Euros
England left-back Luke Shaw was one of the standout performers for the Three Lions on their way to the final of Euro 2020. Despite scoring in the first couple of minutes in the final against Italy, the Manchester United star was unable to get England to their first major title in 55 years.
Shaw will be attracting plenty of players for FPL this season, with the former Southampton star looking to be in the form of his life.
United have an intriguing opening game of the season against rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford, before travelling to Southampton and Wolves in their following August matches. The Red Devils had one of their performances of the 2020-21 season at home to Leeds in a 6-2 win, while they will fancy their chances of winning at St Mary’s and Molineux. Shaw could be set for some big early points, and at 5.0, looks to be a real bargain addition to any squad.
Matt a Targett For Many Teams
Matt Targett was Aston Villa’s highest-scoring defender in FPL last season, and the 25-year-old is another candidate for some early points. Villa also have a favourable start to the season, as they travel to newly promoted Watford in their opener, before hosting Newcastle United and new arrivals Brentford.
Villa boasted the keeper with the highest points tally last season in Emiliano MartÃnez, and they should be able to land some early clean sheets. Targett, who is priced at 5.0, likes to get forward too, and could well find himself amongst the assists in those early games against the Hornets, Magpies and Bees.
Robertson, Shaw and Targett all look capable of making impressive early starts and would form a back-three that many players will be considering ahead of the new campaign.
