Long (Jelavic 86)
The HCT (Hull City Tigers anyone?) No . . . oh well, ‘Hull’ then, begun their first ever European campaign last night in Slovakia where they secured a 0-0 draw with Trencin. The second leg of this is Thursday 7th followed by a friendly in Stuttgart on the Sunday (10th). Thereafter if they qualify next week, they face the final play-off round for the Europa League on Thursday 21st and 28th August – just as the Premier League campaign is beginning to take off. Beware rotation in the Hull ranks.
[divider_1px]
So there you have it – up to date on all pre-season (and relevant European) matters so what have we learned?
HOT:
Stevan Jovetic
The Manchester City striker has had a great pre-season so far scoring four goals in his last two matches against Milan and Liverpool. Those Edin Dzeko supporters who were rubbing their hands excitedly after Alvaro Negredo’s injury will now be wringing their hands nervously at the form of the Montenegrin. The likliehood is that rotation will occur to partner Sergio Aguero in attack for Manuel Pellegrini’s charges. It really is so difficult to second guess the Chilean. Interestingly though Dzeko and Jovetic were paired together in the Liverpool match but I don’t see Aguero NOT playing or City going for three strikers.
So, who will start in attack when the Sky Blues open up at Newcastle on the opening weekend? Ask me a question on geography!
Southampton
Amidst the frenzy of activity at Southampton this summer due to the mass exodus of playing staff, it sort of has gone unnoticed that they have now played five pre-season matches and until 15 minutes from the end of last night’s win at Brighton, they had not concede one single goal, winning all those matches.
It bodes well for the Saints defence going into the season and it may be the same for our fantasy teams. You can pick up Jose Fonte, Ryan Bertrand or Nathaniel Clyne as probable first choices for Ronald Koeman. More interestingly, providing they don’t sign further defensive reinforcements, there may be decent value in Maya Yoshida (4.5) or Jos Hoiveld (4.0).
My following of all of Southampton’s matches via club reporters and twitter have shown me that Nathaniel Clyne is being involved regularly in the offensive half of the field and with Chambers now off to the Emirates, he will be my investment in the Saints backline.
Additionally, for those investing in some of Southampton’s new attacking talent, both Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic have scored for their new clubs already and also laid on a few goals between them.
NOT
Vito Mannone
This may well all be part of Gus Poyet’s grand plan but Vito Mannone has played just 45 minutes of Sunderland’s first match (against Darlington) and then 60 minutes versus Carlisle United. Those were the club’s first two pre-season matches and in the preceding three, he has not seen a minute of action with Costel Pantillimon and the youth goalkeepers preferred. It has been revealed at the time of writing this article, that he is also not involved in tonight’s friendly against Vitoria Setubal, reportedly through illness. Therefore we only have two Sunderland pre-season matches to come so we’ll see if this changes but his current absence raises some issues for some fantasy managers.
The good news for prospective fantasy owners is that you can have his likely replacement, the huge Romanian Pantillimon, for exactly the same outlay of cash so this shouldn’t disrupt the rest of your fantasy team plans in any way.

Brilliant – thanks GP, really appreciate all these. You’re gonna be shattered with all this travelling 😉
Init,
No problems whatsoever mate. I’ll have that message over to you tomorrow after the Community Shield. That and my expenses. I’ve left out my hotel room expenses for no particular reason *cough*
Think thats bad? Wait til he puts in his expenses!
He’ll have a job. FF247 conveniently moved house while he was away 😉
Cheers TGP!
Lots to ponder…
Hutton playing most of the game
Yoshida playing 90
Taider playing further forward
No Mirallas or lukaku still
Loads of subs being made. Hard to predict next weekend.
Hmmmm. Ponder ponder ponder.
Chins I believe Martinez has said neither Mirallas or Lukaku will be ready for next weekend after the WC etc. You know cos they spent the summer boozing and getting fat. Oh no hang on they spent it playing and keeping fit. Don’t get it.
I know, all this rest BS is doing my head in. Don’t remember another seaon like it.
Mirallas out then. Who to bring in i wonder….
What’s the rest of your mid like? Or team. Or squad?!
Here it is in all its glory…
Mirallas out and risk on defence….
Also thinking i may play the fixtures more and double up on utd and/or chelski…
Chins you got a decent drawing board? 😉
Only messing mate, looks good. Getting word from a Palace fan today that Mariappa may not play and in fact they are expecting a replacement to be brought in this week so keep an eye on that. I’m doubling up on both Utd and Chelski but then I intend to WC early so you may want to consider the implications of doing so if you’re not but the fixtures suggest it’s not the worst idea.
Cheers init.
Good call on palace.
I think i need a rethink given the fixtures as i’m planning on an international break WC too.
Init,
Me either. How long have they been back now? So it can’t be jet-lag!
chins,
Absolutely mate. Reading through the reports more thoroughly now to see if there is anything else to be gleaned from today’s teams, formation etc.
Got the Community Shield tomorrow and friendlies for Liverpool, Newcastle, Sunderland and Hull before Chelsea and Man Utd round theirs off on Tuesday so by tomorrow night we should have 99% of the pre-season info!
Thanks GP.
Andy,
You’re welcome – hope you can find something amongst it that will help you out.
I’m not touching nothing now till after the final Chelski game on the 12th, plenty of time to take stock and read other peoples opinions before pretending to come up with my own now. Looking forward to next weeks articles on here.
Andy,
Well said. Think of all these poor souls who have been changing their team and fretting every hour of the day for around three weeks now!
Cheers TGP
Clean sheet for Soton and Palace. Another defeat for Everton.
Apparently Allbrighton is injured
Horse,
Evening mate. Yeah – an interesting day. Albrighton was taken off injured yeah. Wait for news on that but he has not been near any of my draft teams for a while.
Southampton lost 1-0 today but it was an unfortunate OG by Pelle. Palace did secure a clean sheet with Jerome Williams again playing at left back (figured a lot in pre-season) – he is a 19 year old who isn’t even listed in FPL yet.
TGP – there is a Williams listed in mid. That not him?
Hi Dreamers,
No that’s Jonathan Williams, a Welsh midfielder. The guy is called Jerome and plays left back.
Sorry misread Soton result.
Jerome Williams sounds interesting.
I havent heard anything about Tadic lately. He seems out of favour for RMTs now.
You heard anything recently about him?
Draw at St. James’ Park for Pompey today. (That’ll be Exeter not Le Toon)
Horse,
He has been playing and notched an assist and scored etc. The club feed said today he was the right prong of the front attacking three (they said 4-3-3) – read from that what you will.
Yeah followed that result. Bookies favourites – you reckon they are made of the right stuff to go up this year. I certainly hope so.
TGP,
Pompey fans have just had a whip round to build Pompey academy and have raised 250k in 58 days. Impressive stuff!
I really hope we can do it this season. Including the league cup we have 3 home games on the bounce.
We should have a decent idea of how things stand and that.
I heard that Celtic are 1/66 to win the SPL.
I guess the big target must be the Champions League.
Their season was almost over before July was out! LOL
How do you see Rangers doing this season?
Horse,
Amazing support and you should be proud. Hope the players can do the business on the field and take the first step back.
Celtic are really poor just now – their board has stood still I think and Scots clubs can never do that as they are faced with three qualifiers to get through.
We start at home to Hearts tomorrow which will be tough. Not sure how this season will go to be honest – big step up.
good stuff TGP
GP, thanks. Very much for keeping us updated on all these preseason friendlies mate, it really is a life saver. Well, more of a time saver, but you know what I mean. Great stuff pal, cheers
