The highest single-season fantasy Premier League players
Millions worldwide enjoy lining up their fantasy Premier League team at the start of the season. Some people take it more seriously than others and will put hours of meticulous research into their squad selection to try and maximise the points output. For world-class players who have been in the league for many years, they are often in the higher bracket of points totals as the Premier League draws to a conclusion.
With fantasy football, you want players who excel in areas generally not considered assets for their position. So, if you have a defender who scores a lot of goals, sets up a lot of goals or takes free kicks, you can gain more points. Players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, for example, will often score more points as defenders get more points for goals and assists than attacking players do.
Likewise, if you have a goalkeeper specializing in saving penalties, this is another area where you can accrue bonus points for your fantasy football team. Often, it is players who have that extra bit of magic or spark to them that can score you the highest points in their position; some players also have incredible one-off seasons, which is where we will begin today.
Son Heung-min – 2021/22
As the recipient of the Golden Boot in last year’s Premier League campaign, Son was considered a perfect collaboration partner with fellow fantasy football legend Harry Kane. Of course, it wouldn’t be right to suggest that this was a one-off season, but his form this season has taken a frightening dip and although he has impressed in previous campaigns, he didn’t hit anywhere near the same level of form as last year.
In addition, he would have been an expensive mistake for many people, as he entered this season as the most costly player in many squads and failed miserably to replicate his form. However, given that he was technically classed as a midfielder alongside Liverpool’s Mo Salah, they both stormed away with incredible points tallies last year.
Frank Lampard 2009/10
As arguably the most outstanding midfielder of the Premier League era, Lampard guided Chelsea to multiple domestic and European honours. Although his form as a manager isn’t anything to write home about, there’s no denying how good he was in his playing days. Lampard’s points tally in the 2009/10 season was the highest ever recorded for an out-and-out midfielder.
Lampard had the lot – he had the strike rate of a forward, could spot an incredible pass to split open defences and would often scoop up man of the match awards. As a midfielder, he got more points for his goal contributions and often took penalties and free kicks, which boosted his points tally even further.
Having pipped Manchester United on the final day to win the Premier League title, Lampard’s incredible campaign was the reason the West London club scooped up another title – and he is considered immortal and untouchable by many Chelsea fans.
Luis Suárez – 2013/14
There was a point in the 2013/14 season when Luis Suárez was rivalling Lionel Messi. This included a series of games where he scored back-to-back hat tricks. He seemed to be hosting his own personal goal-of-the-month competition.
The striker’s form was spectacular and despite all of the controversies that cloud his legacy, in terms of pure ability, this was the most incredible individual season in the history of the Premier League.
Suárez scored 31 goals in the league and assisted a further 12, with Liverpool coming within a whisker of winning the title. This feat was even more miraculous, given that he missed over a month of the season for biting an opponent. There were some fantastic set-piece goals, which are always something to look out for, but no penalties.
His form led to a massive money move to Barcelona later that summer. However, many Reds will never forget the role the precociously gifted Uruguayan played that season, ranking second in the all-time list.
Mo Salah – 2017/18
The Egyptian forward is one of the deadliest strikers in the world. Although he has yet to replicate a similar level of form this year as we have experienced in recent campaigns, his 303-point tally back in 2018 is the highest single-season tally in Premier League fantasy football history.
The forward, considered surplus to requirements at Chelsea, scored 32 goals and broke several records that had been held for a long time. Erling Haaland will likely enter this list, given he is just two goals behind Salah, with eight games left to play. However, for now, the Egyptian stands at the top of this particular podium for his incredible achievements that season.
