A selection of undervalued players in FPL 2023
Everyone has Erling Haaland in their team, while it’s easy to predict a fruitful campaign for players like Bruno Fernandes and Mohamed Salah. As well as assessing the fixtures and acquiring some of the aforementioned entirely obvious picks to your squad, you can gain an advantage by adding a few undervalued players to your line-up. Not only will they add some much-needed points on a weekly basis, but they can also increase in value and enable you to go big in other areas.
Undervalued players have always been in demand anyway, although it’s subjective in terms of deciding who is actually undervalued. While these players perhaps don’t dominate the discussions on YouTube and Twitter or are backed for topping the Premier League scoring charts in sports betting, they’re capable of bringing in some much-needed points as you aim to leapfrog any overly confident friends and fierce rivals in mini-leagues. In fact, undervalued acquisitions can make a huge difference to the shape of your squad moving forward and, potentially, your overall ranking come the end of the season.
Despite the new Premier League season being in its relative infancy, there are some undervalued players that are already emerging. So, if you’re looking to add a few gems to your starting line-up, then below is a look at just some of them.
Aaron Hickey – Brentford
During the club’s time in the Premier League so far, Brentford have managed to gain a reputation for having a resolute defence. Priced at just £4.5 million, full-back Aaron Hickey is the perfect way into the Bees’ solid backline, particularly given Rico Henry’s season-ending injury. The Scottish international can play on either side, he is known to record the occasional assist, and he has huge potential, given the fact that he’s only 21 years old.
James Ward-Prowse – West Ham United
After joining the club from Southampton in the summer, an FPL favourite for many in the shape of James Ward-Prowse became an instant pick for a lot of managers. His start to life in London showcased his immense FPL potential, although some bosses aren’t too keen on his £6.2 million price tag. On the other hand, other managers disagree and see huge potential in a player who provides perfect set-pieces and appears to have been given more of a license to roam and create under David Moyes. While he is one of the more expensive unvalued players on the list, James Ward-Prowse has the potential to grow in value as the season progresses.
Robert Sanchez – Chelsea
After signing for Chelsea due to the loss of his place to Jason Steele at Brighton last season following the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi, Robert Sanchez is a goalkeeper well worth looking at. Despite the Blues’ fairly lacklustre start to life under Mauricio Pochettino, clean sheets are likely to be on the horizon and the Spanish stopper’s place isn’t under threat at Stamford Bridge. Over the years, Pochettino’s sides have had fairly resolute defences. When it does eventually click, Robert Sanchez could be an absolute bargain after starting at £4.5 million, although he is now valued at £4.6 million given the numerous clean sheets he has already recorded.
Jeremy Doku – Manchester City
At £6.5 million, there is a strong argument to suggest that Jeremy Doku isn’t actually undervalued, but given his ceiling and his relatively low ownership compared to other attackers in the Manchester City squad, he could well turn out to be. The 21-year-old has already started a number of games for Pep Guardiola’s side, with his dribbling ability and trickery already catching the eye. Doku has a lot to learn, but he possesses the pace and direct running that could make him a real handful for Premier League defenders this season. One to certainly keep tabs on, Jeremy Doku has a bright future.
Evan Ferguson – Brighton
Evan Ferguson’s price tag continues to rise in the virtual world of fantasy football, but also in the real world as the likes of Manchester City continue to be linked with his signature. The Irish striker’s value of £6 million at the time of writing makes him a fantastic pick, particularly given Brighton’s goal threat, while he also provides a route into the Seagulls’ attack if the likes of Kaoru Mitoma aren’t tickling your fancy. After his breakthrough campaign last season, Ferguson has the potential to bag even more goals in the coming months, with his stock expected to rise even further and his FPL value likely to increase.
Other undervalued players to consider include David Raya (Arsenal), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), Abdoulaye Doucouré (Everton), Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City), Ethan Pinnock (Brentford), Pau Torres (Aston Villa), Joachim Andersen (Crystal Palace), and Sven Botman (Newcastle United).
