Captain Picks Fantasy Football Game-week 7 – Fantasy Premier League 2015/16

After an upsetting start to the season, most experienced fantasy managers had expected things to return to normal by now, but that hope got quickly thrown out the window when West Ham ended City’s winning streak last round. In other news, Mahrez and Wilson are the top scorers of the Premier League with 5 goals each so far, while Aguero and Hazard have only scored once, with Sanchez not scoring at all. Frustrated fantasy managers continue to have low ranks while noobs and newbies ride on the top, hence some of you might be thinking about captaining some of these upstarts rather than relying on big names. Good luck then that I have several captain picks for you, covering both big names as well as some upstarts.

Sergio Aguero & Kevin De Bruyne – away vs Spurs

[/three_fourth]While many have probably been burned by captaining Aguero already this season – some of you have even done it multiple times – then his failure to deliver points in the way we have grown used to have certainly been disappointing. This round, however, Aguero kicks off the weekend against a Spurs defence that he loves scoring against. City have scored 16 goals in the last 4 Premier League matches against Tottenham with Aguero having scored 8 of them. What better time to reignite his form and start performing the way we are used to than against his favorite team to play against?
Meanwhile, Kevin de Bruyne has impressed by slotting right into the team and looking like he’s played there for several seasons already. He managed a goal in his starting debut against West Ham, and also scored 1 and assisted 1 in the Capital Cup against Sunderland. If you feel more comfortable taking a gamble after the big names have failed to deliver so far this season, then you have a good option right here.

Anthony Martial – home vs Sunderland

[/three_fourth]While Martial has had pressure on his shoulders from the beginning by being the only striker brought in to satisfy the United fans’ desire for new blood up top, no one expected him to score 1 goal coming off the bench and 2 more against Southampton. United face Sunderland who are bottom in the Premier League with only 2 points. This should be a definite win for the Red Devils as they look to build on a strong showing against Liverpool last round, and Martial certainly looks like he belongs amongst the goals. With Rooney continuing to struggle to find form in front of goal, much of the responsibility for finding the back of the net has fallen on the French teenager’s shoulders – and with Memphis slowly starting to find his way in the Premier League and United having the strongest midfield they’ve had in years, young Martial will be a popular bandwagon pick this week – especially after the Black Cats were again humbled at home, this time in midweek by United’s noisy neighbours.

Pedro – away vs Newcastle

[/three_fourth]The Chelsea fans finally got a result they wanted last round when Chelsea beat Arsenal at the Bridge. While Pedro was not amongst the goals then, he most certainly has looked sharp and involved in the attack, making me choose him over Hazard as a captain pick. He has scored 1 goal and assisted 2 goals so far, which means that he has either scored or assisted almost half of Chelsea’s goals in the Premier League. Against a Newcastle that are stuck just above Sunderland, Chelsea should earn another victory – that is unless Newcastle turn up the kind of appearance that has seen them beat Chelsea in 5 of the last 8 matches these teams have met, but that does not seem likely at this point. With Diego Costa missing the game through suspension, a lot will depend on Pedro, Hazard and either Radamel Falcao or ex-Toon Loic Remy – however, the win over Arsenal will have injected some much needed confidence into the Champions who are now playing catch up big time, while Newcastle who lost last week at home to Watford look like they’ll still be stuck firmly at the bottom with the Black Cats come the end of the weekend. Bleak times in the North East for sure – time for Pedro and pals to make hay.

Riyad Mahrez – home vs Arsenal

[/three_fourth]Leicester are certainly high-flying at the moment, sitting 4th in the table, and central to their performance has been Mahrez, who has an astonishing 5 goals and 3 assists in 6 matches. While Leicester meet their most difficult opponent so far this round, they would want to continue their fine performance and free-flowing football which has seen the goals come one after another. Against an Arsenal side that has yet to find their best form, they might just do that, but will probably have to put up their best performance of the season. Mahrez did at least get a small rest in midweek, as he only started on the bench in the Capital One Cup win over the Hammers and even when the Algerian came on he continued to spark the Foxes into life, creating chances and getting himself in threatening positions. Mahrez drives the team and as you can see from the stats, most of what Leicester produce goes through him -while Leicester have a habit of conceding and indeed presenting their opponents with a lead, they also have the all-important habit of bouncing back. It’s Mahrez time!

Alexis Sanchez – away vs Leicester

[/three_fourth]On the other hand, Arsenal will want to bounce right back with a win after their loss against Chelsea last weekend, and they could do just that coming up against a Leicester defence that has conceded 9 goals so far. While the Foxes look a constant threat going forward, they look vulnerable at the back – in the last two gameweeks they have given their opponents a two-goal start and while they were able to recover to beat Villa and draw with Stoke, giving the Gooners a two goal lead may be a bridge too far for them. This could quickly be a high-scoring match, in which case Sanchez is likely to be seen among the goals. While he has not delivered so far, it looks like bad luck more than anything as he has been getting plenty of chances, finding himself in superb positions in front of goal and taking several shots. If you are willing to give the big names another chance before abandoning ship for the upstarts, give Sanchez some consideration.

Dimitri Payet – home vs Norwich

[/three_fourth]Had I told you before the season started that West Ham would win their three away games against Arsenal, Liverpool, and City and score 11 goals and concede only 1 in the process, would you have believed me? Probably not? Of course, you wouldn’t. Well that is certainly how it’s gone and Payet has been central for West Ham with 3 goals and 2 assists. The Irons have been scoring freely with 13 goals in 6 matches and against a Norwich defence that has yet to keep a clean sheet, their goalscoring should continue, and Payet is certainly likely to be involved. With Diafra Sakho finding his touch again in front of goal at City and Victor Moses showing impressive speed, creation and energy alongside Payet, the Hammers are now a real attacking threat with manager Bilic looking like he is organising his troops into an outfit that can realistically challenge for a top-6 spot. If they do, then Payet will be his go-to man – he hasn’t let him down so far and his stats from France suggest his returns are here to stay.

Triple Captain Chip
Just a quick word on the new feature this season. It pretty much does what it says on the tin and trebles your points for your captain on whichever game-week you choose to deploy it. We shall touch on this as and when we feel the opportunity presents itself to use it effectively (not last week Potty! He was away to Pardew after all you fool 😉 ) but this in all likelihood is one to save for when we encounter double game-weeks later on in the season.
