Captains Picks Fantasy Football Gameweek 24 – Fantasy Premier League 2014/15

Captain picksOn any normal transfer deadline day nothing would have trumped Carlisle United’s procurement of Nathan Buddle from Blyth Spartans. But like a crossbar shuddering from a Geoff Hurst thunderbolt, the football world is still reverberating from the impact of Monday’s biggest story; Man Utd’s signing of defender Andy Kellet on loan from Bolton. When asked whether he’d still retain his 3-5-2 formation in light of this capture, Louis van Gaal mumbled, “But of course. We are in a bad moment like Queens Park Raisins. Kellet will make the youth team strong. This is football.”
If you went for Harry Kane as captain last week, one of Calvin Clyne’s tips, you’ll have been rewarded handsomely with a 26 point haul. Gambles on Cazorla and Walters would have been ever sweeter, shovelling 34 or 38 points respectively your way.
So to Gameweek 24. The fact that Andy Kellet hasn’t made it into today’s Captain Picks is testament to the quality of the quintet that has. Right, shall we?

[/three_fourth]5. Theo Walcott (away vs Spurs)
He’s back, and just like nearly every other comeback he’s made, it caught most of us off guard.
After a few rusty cameo appearances from the bench, Theo already looks ready to stake a claim on our hearts, minds and most importantly a return to our FPL squads. He bagged a goal in his first league start in over a year, showing glimpses of the explosive form that brought him 14 goals and 13 assists in 2012/13. Having clocked up over 140 minutes including his FA Cup stint versus Hull, it would seem that Arsenal’s road runner is finally ready for the end of season run-in.

4. Harry Kane (home vs Arsenal)
Spurs biggest signing of the transfer window was getting ‘one of their own’, and former Arsenal fan, Harry Kane to pen a new five-and-a-half year contract at The Lane, taking his tenure through to the end of the decade. Genuine 2020 vision. Of course, what will probably happen is he’ll be bought by Man City in 2 years and rebranded as Citizen Kane. Enough of the future hypotheticals. Right now, ‘Dirty Sanchez’ is in danger of being overshadowed by North London’s own sharpshooting Dirty Harry. A winning goal against the Gunners would surely embalm him eternally in Spurs folklore. Banking on a captain in the unique cauldron of a derby is a gamble. You’ve got to ask yourself, ‘Do I feel lucky?’. Well, do ya, punk?

[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]3. Eden Hazard (away vs Aston Villa)
How new recruit Cuadrado will affect Chelsea’s offensive dynamics remains to be seen, but one imagines very positively. Hazard’s productivity shows no sign of waning, with or without the addition of a pacy Colombian at Villa Park. Mourinho has often criticized, and been criticized for, teams that park the bus. Well, against a bottom of the form table Villa side that has failed to score in 10 hours and only netted 11 times all season, he can probably get away with parking a tricycle inconspicuously next to one of the fire exits. Another defeat in the manner of their 5-0 Emirates mauling, this time within the less forgiving walls of his home crowd, could see the much maligned manager finally doing the Lambert Walk. His main antagonist will be Hazard, who has recently proven with goals at Southampton and Spurs that Stamford Bridge is no longer the only Garden of Eden.

[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]2. David Silva (home vs Hull)
Following 3 straight defeats, fans of injury-ravaged Hull City will be hoping their players don’t show the same generosity that saw them contribute heavily to their own downfall against Newcastle. That’s if they can even get the ball off David Silva to begin with. Gran Canaria’s pocket-sized performer grabbed his 7th goal at Chelsea last Saturday, already equalling his career-best in the Premier League. An instinctive poke diverting a wayward Aguero shot back on course means we can now add poaching to his armoury of weapons. For the alliteration addicts at large, that makes him a poking, pocket-sized, poaching performer. For the FPL addicts at large, that makes him captaincy gold.

[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]1. Sergio Aguero (home vs Hull)
With the exception of Chelsea’s game at Villa Park, Man City’s fixture is quite arguably the only match of the weekend that looks predictable. What seems even more predictable is that Aguero will bag a nice wedge of FPL points. Yes, yes, he hasn’t scored since his return from his latest injury, but they’ve been against Chelsea and Arsenal. He’s played a modest 1,247 minutes in all so far this season, notching 14 goals with 4 assists. That’s a goal every 89 minutes! So there you have it. He is literally guaranteed to score against Steve Bruce’s timid Tigers who’ve conceded 11 without reply in the last 3 games. The only sane reason not to captain Sergio Aguero is if you don’t have him.

Evening lads. What should I do with this team? I have my Wildcard to play.
I want Ageuro in here and was thinking Austin to Ageuro but I also feel Sturridge is a good bet too but what do you think??

      Raziel says:

I think it’s decision time. Make up your f-ing mind. :p

      • MattX says:

Haha thanks Raz. I had a WC team but was told my defence is really lacking which I agreed with but can’t figure how to keep the defence relatively strong well still having everywhere else strong. Do you think my team is good enough to just leave as is with just Austin to Ageuro?

        • Raziel says:

I’m loving JwP. He’s the main cheap mid to have, 0.7m cheaper than Puncheon. You could also downgrade Merte to Bellerin, I don’t see Chambers coming back anytime soon (he was terrible as RB). Considering Bellerin myself but already got 3 Arsenal players. You should also downgrade Trippier to van Aanholt (they have great fixtures and he shows just as much if not more potential going forward than Trippier and at the moment he’s 0.6m cheaper).

Too many what ifs in your team with Fabs and Sanchez. I just have Sanchez at the moment and I’m seriously starting to consider replacing him if Wenger keeps the vague talk going. Either he plays or he doesn’t. Can’t imagine how big a nightmare it would be when both Fabs and Sanchez don’t play on a WC team.

        • Raziel says:

Sorry mate but I have to be honest. The team still doesn’t look balanced. Players I would probably like in my team are:
Guzan (though I prefer Pantsu for same price) – Krul
          Clyne – Terry – Wisdom
          Sanchez – Sterling
          Giroud – Kane

With the rest of the money I’d make other changes.

        • MattX says:

Ye I understand all that mate and it makes sense.the list of players there are players you think I should have??

        • gkw says:

Sorry Raz, loving JWP but loving his stats? 😉 One goal scored ever, which was 3 years ago in the cup at Coventry. For 0.2m less you could get Zouma, who’s the same age (20) and scored 6 goals including one recently in the cup (against the mighty Watford) – and he’s a defender so he also gets a handy 4pts for Chelsea CSs. Or for 0.4m more than JWP you could get midfielder Jonathan W, who’s a bit older at 31 but knows where the back of the net is and has notched 84 goals in his career including 7 this season.

        • Raziel says:

          @ GKW
This is the main reason why Watford are playing the fourth division.

Anyway. Zouma is a rotation risk. Bellerin on the other hand has been chosen 3 EPL matches in a row.

I don’t care about goals. I just know JwP is involved in pretty much everything and he’s taking almost all set pieces. It’s funny you’re talking about goals. You know FPL are not about goals right? JwP has 50 points while he just played 900 minutes. Let’s take a Downing, he is superman according to some, he got 5 goals and played 1972 minutes. His point tally is on 118 points. So the mediocre non-scoring JwP would be on 100 points in 1800 minutes add 180 minutes to that, let’s say 110 points. For 4.8m that’s a freaking cheap mid and a perfect 5th mid.

As for Walters. He had a freak accident in the last game which completely blurs how average he really is. Plus he’s a striker/winger whereas JwP usually plays central midfield. And still JwP doing very well and pretty soon will do much better than a Walters. If JwP got the same amount of minutes as Walters he’d be on 75 points, just 10 less than Walters (whom had a stunning 19 points in his last game with his hattrick).

STOP THE HATING. Are Watford and Soton enemies or whut? >.<

        • gkw says:

Raz, last time Watford were in the Premiership the Southampton fans sang at us “you’re sh!t and you’re going down” and we sang back “you’re sh!t and you’re staying up” but we like them really. It was a pity when they subsequently got relegated, twice as I recall, and tbh it’s been nice to see them go up and doing so well now.

I also like Southampton players in FPL. I still have Clyne. Pelle scored loads for me, but I upgraded him to Aguero. I only sold Tadic when he got injured. I also bought Bertrand on my WC this Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately had to sell him less than 4 hours later. If his price drops this GW I might just buy him back. Djuricic is also tempting. He and Tadic and Mane and Pelle have scored loads of goals in their careers. They’re all worth considering as FPL signings, as are all their defenders. So it’s very likely I’ll have 3 Southampton players again. But JWP won’t be one of them, as he’d be a waste of a Southampton berth and I’m not even convinced he’ll keep his place in the side.

          Anyway, time for sleep. ‘Night.

        • Raziel says:

          @ GKW
You know half of what I said was ”banter” right? Don’t take it so lightly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s serious SHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same here mate. Had a long freaking day. I’ll actually keep your information on JwP in the back of my mind. Now also off for bed. Oyasumi Nasai. Goodnight

      Eagle says:

Aguero for me and you captain him. Sturridge is a good bet but will need to build his fitness. How about Trippier to PVA and maybe King to Boyd/Ward Prowse?

      • MattX says:

That was the plan eagle. I was planning on bringing in Panty so should I double up in defence? And King is just a 5th mid who doesn’t get on my team so I don’t think I’ll bother upgrading him and use the money elsewhere.

    • 19.3

Matt, Rodgers has said that Studge will not be starting games for a couple of weeks, so wouldn’t worry to much about buying him just yet.

    • 19.4
      NIN says:

Not even a contest mate. To buy Sturridge ahead of Aguero would be bat-shit crazy, in my opinion.

      • MattX says:

No I was planning on them both mate that’s why my defence was weak.

        • NIN says:

I’m confused now. The original text suggests it’s a toss up between Aguero/Studge and the team in the image has a beast defence. Am i missing something? laugh

        • MattX says:

Sounds like it. I’ll explain smile the team in the pic is my current team. Do you think I should just leave it and change Austin to Ageuro and Trippier to PvA? Or is there something else I should do with my WC

        • NIN says:

Aha! Sill me. I would activate it for sure mate. Guazn, Krul, Trippier, King, Sterling and Austin are the ones i would drop. Alexis/Cesc situation is a waiting game so cant really comment on those until more info is released.

        • NIN says:

          *silly. Dagnabbit laugh

        • MattX says:

Haha well atleast your all caught up now. What do you think of this team?

        • NIN says:

Money is tight, eh? Hmm. I’d make a few of changes here. Oscar -> Cazorla. Maybe downgrade Eriksen to fund Sterling -> Hazard. Wilkinson is a dead rubber too so he’s a big no no for a WC team, for me, and it may take another downgrade somewhere to fix that one, depending on funds.

        • MattX says:

Money is very tight. Would you still have Sanchez if I bought Cazorla. That could raise some funds and I’m not sure about having no Liverpool coverage they are starting to hit form again and I don’t really want to miss out.

        • gkw says:

Matt, I wouldn’t be too bothered either way about Pool coverage. But I reckon Sanchez to Cazorla is a sound move and raises useful cash.

        • MattX says:

Cheers gkw. Sure ill have a look at that move and have a think about everything else.

An excellent article beautifully written by the pint-sized, perfectly-preened, pontificating pun-peddler. smile

Loved it Bryan, well done mate.

    I see Aguero is shading the poll by 77 votes to . . . . 7.
