Our 2022/23 Overall Rank and Recent History
Now last season did not go entirely how we would have hoped. There were more postponements, double gameweeks and players with well over 11 million playing the game so we will put our rank down to those issues. Unfortunately we ended up with a rank of 297,085 which is our worst rank in the nine seasons this team has been running.
For that reason the big bosses have decided to bring me (MattX) in as they obviously need some help! Or more likely a scapegoat for whenever things go wrong.
Initial set up
To start things off we did a very basic add on the most obvious players of Haaland, Trent, Saka. Sprinkle in some more Arsenal in the forms of Jesus and Gabriel, toss in the template 6.5s M&Ms (Mitoma and Mbuemo) then fill in the gaps.
We didn’t do any tinkering with the draft over the preseason friendlies and instead took a back seat to focus on our own teams. That proved to be a solid idea as when we looked back at the inital draft there were a litany of problems; Jesus was injured, Mbuemo is flagged, Trent and co. can’t defend so we did a fire sale and changed up quite a few. The M&Ms got split, Jesus stays in his cave with no resurrection in sight and instead we’ve gone with not one, but two blonde Norwegians!
Here is the final product! (I didn’t quite work my differential magic just yet, need to lull them into a false sense of security. They need to think I actually know what I’m doing first!)
We have squeezed every last drop out of the transfer budget this year but we feel it is warrented as there are nice picks all over the pitch.
The Line-Up
We have gone for 2 cheap picks in Mubama and Bell who will largely keep our bench warm the majority of weeks. The one bench player we did go for is 4.5 defender Botman who offers brilliant value for money at that price hopefully Newcastle can stay as one of the best defences in the league. Everywhere else picks itself. Mbuemo may be flagged but it’s believed he will make GW1. Our biggest debate was the keeper Johnstone vs Pickford with Johnstone winning out
Captain – Haaland
Fairly straightforward. It’s Haaland. Enough said.
Saka will take over if for some reason Haaland doesn’t make an appearance.

Back for another year..
1st draft, what do we think?..
Should I downgrade Tripper to Botman & do Gvardiol (bit of a punt from being a City fan) to Stones/other defender?
Thanks as always!
yes i would. trips got a ? now they signed the young lad for 40mill
Read somewhere the new lad will play LB.
Very expensive for those first 5 fixtures so I’d downgrade
anyone in for salah this year?
I plan an early WC gw 5 maybe if I do I’ll take salah from thee. Early games to hit and miss.
Yes, see my team on post 23.
Is anyone else getting cold feet on Estu or just me? No Caicedo, Colwill or MacA
I know nothing about him. Purely a bandwagon decision for me.
The fixtures look good. Will be interesting to see if they’re as effective this season without Caicedo and Mac.
No Colwill either and De zerbi has said be will be rotating keepers until he decides on a number 1. Not inspiring comments
Damn it, now you’ve put me off him!!
Who can I replace him with?!
Trying to decide best mid / fwd combo for opening weeks
Haaland, Rashford and Saka are a lock. 4 spots left to fill…
Candidates to come from the following teams: Arsenal (double up with Saka), Villa (Watkins), Brentford (Mbumeo), Brighton (Mitoma or Pedro), Palace (Eze), Chelsea (Jackson),
Pick 4. Or do I dump Rashford and take 5 from the list?
Thanks all!
For me:
Odegaard
Watkins
Mbuemo
Jackson
Thanks Matt. I was nearly there. Liking Eze over Mbumeo, but those Brentford fixtures are tasty and they score a lot of goals.
I’ve gone Eze and Diaby as differences but I could be hurt by not going Mbuemo. Its a little risk I’m going to take
+1. I have Martinelli instead of Ode but otherwise the same. Chelsea is a bit of a gamble, mind you.
I think Martinelli is more at risk of losing minutes. Trossard pushing hard for that spot. And as much as I don’t agree with it, I think Arteta has a thing for squeezing Havertz in there too.
Odegaard feels safer, as Vieira is the only realistic challenger for mins there, and that’ll only be if the game is won / lost already. Or maybe if it’s a game immediately before a champs league game.
I’d love Ode, but the 0.5m is proving hard to find. Unless I bin Bruno for one of the numerous 6.5 m mids (which is fun and tempting in any case)
I don’t think Rashford can be dumped.
I think I agree. Thanks.
Hi everyone, great to have football and fpl back. I’ve been a bit absent the last few seasons but this year will be making a better effort. Site team looks good, although extremely template. But then, it’s template for a reason. I have decided to move away from the template slightly this year and have squeezed in Salah. Pretty much locked in on the team, although keep switching between Diaz and Stones. Chukwuemeka is a complete punt. Went with Osula instead of Mubama as I’m worried he’ll drop in price fairly quickly.
Would love any feedback. Good luck to everyone. May the green arrows flow.
Diaz has supposedly not travelled so go Stones. Chuk could be a cheeky punt and I looked at him briefly but I prefer the 5 mids I have right now. Osula seems to be green lit for the first game anyway. Archer could be an option if be gets a move. UiJo at Forest seems to be popping up in teams too
Hi MattX, thanks for the article. Yea, heard he didnt travel so moved back to Stones. I totally get the 5 mids, but gotta make allowances to get Salah in. I basically decided I wanted pool attk coverage very early and with questions around whos starting, it’s gotta be the Egyptian King. With only around 25% ownership he’s almost a differential. Good luck for the season ahead.
Yeah I have a Salah draft but think I’m going without. Hopefully it doesn’t hurt me too bad but I’m sure it will
Dias of City or Diaz of Liverpool has not travelled ? getting confused here, not hard
Sorry autocorrect Dias of City.
Cheers Matt, had a bit of a sweat on there, i’m having a little gamble on Diaz, no Salah.
I really like Diaz and was tempted by him but that Liverpool attack is very hard to judge. I actually think Gakpo might be most nailed as he has dropped back into midfield on some occasions in preseason
If Pedro plays, that’s a great team.
With about four and a half hours until lift off this is what I have. I’m pretty locked in. My major debates are Etsu or Chillwell and Eze or Mbeumo. What do you all think? Something else missing?
Chilwel & Eze for me.
Haven’t seen many teams with 3 forwards. Overall, I like it. Good luck.
Great team. I’m on Eze right now but I’m seriously tempted by those Mbeumo fixtures
Chilly and Mbuemo
Yeah I like it too. My present draft is a 3-4-3, though I’ve not gone Salah, rather double Arsenal.
Mbuemo is tempting me, in for Bruno, spread the funds a little, cover more teams. Also Diaby, but as someone said earlier double Villa attack feels rash haha.
Cheers y’all and good luck! glad this all back in full swing.
