Fantasy football Trends From The Top – GW25

Screen Shot 2016-02-08 at 09.18.08Welcome to this week’s edition of Trends From the Top. For this week’s publication, I sit at my computer reviewing and reflecting upon EPL results while my family and the rest of America is engrossed in the 4th quarter of the Superbowl. I know some folks may think I’m odd but personally, I am indeed more curious to understand Firmino’s rise to success rather than the outcome of Manning’s quarterback performance. Blasphemous to many I know! Having now, perhaps shared too much information, let’s take a look at the top trends for gameweek 25.

Who was the most captained player by the top ten for Gameweek 25?

This week, 50% of the top ten managers selected Aguero as captain (12 points), 30% Firmino (26 points), and 20% Kane (4 points). What is interesting here is the fact that Firmino has virtually been off the top ten radar until this week.

What’s the deal with Firmino and how is it that he’s finally appearing on the radar of the Top Ten?

As you will see below, Firmino was selected by only 4 of the top managers and prior to this week, there has been no talk of him in Trends from the Top. What is interesting about this is that Firmino is actually owned by 14.3% of managers and has had some really great gameweeks since Klopp decided to make him Liverpool’s main striker. Firmino played his first full 90 minutes on December 26th where he earned an assist and brought his owners/managers 8 points. In GW 21, Firmino scored 2 goals (13 points) against Arsenal and in GW 23 scored another 2 (18 points) against Norwich. His form is insane as it is currently at 9.6. And while Liverpool is not playing in Gameweek 27, GW 26 against Aston Villa as well as an upcoming double gameweek, make Firmino a very attractive addition to one’s squad. I only wish I had made him my captain as opposed to my vice captain!

Who were the most popular players chosen by the top ten for Gameweek 25?

Goalkeepers: For this past gameweek 70% of the top managers selected Cech while de Gea, Butland and Hennessey were each owned by 10%.

Defenders: This week we saw 15 defenders make the cut for top managers. Interestingly enough, Alderweireld (70%) was the only defender with an ownership rate of 50% or higher. Dann, Koscielny and Azpilicueta all came in at 30% while Johnson, Cresswell and Bellerin were the next most popular picks with 20% ownership followed by Fonte, Ward, Dawson, Kolarov, Jammaat, Cedric, Francis and Dier each with 10%.

Midfielders: When you look at midfielders, the top 10 managers had 11 different picks with several getting only 10% of the vote such as Sanchez, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, and Arnautovic. Ozil was the most popular pick with 90% ownership followed by Alli and Mahrez at 70%, Barkley and Payet at 50%, Firmino at 40% and Willian with 20%.

Forwards: This week, the front line consisted of 7 picks among the top managers. Aguero came in with 90% while Kane was the next popular pick as he received 80%. Vardy was selected by 30% of the top managers with Lukaku and Ighalo receiving 20%. Valencia and Giroud each received 10%.

In summation, the Must-Haves for top managers for Gameweek 25 were Cech, Mahrez, Alderweireld, Alli, Barkley, Payet, Ozil, Aguero and Kane as they all had an ownership rate of 50% or higher.

What are some other interesting findings regarding our top leaders?

2 of the top players are new to the top 10.

-The most impressive top ten player for this current season is Ryan Grzegowski’s team the Wombats.
-The Wombats are currently in 9th place and have been in the top ten for 14 weeks.
-Chris Rigden’s, I’m Glad All Over team is currently in 5th place and Chris has pretty good stats…the best of the leaders. Chris finished 31,905 for the 2011/2012 season and 15,153 for the 2012/2013 season. He has only used his first wildcard and has yet to deploy any chips. He is certainly one to watch.
-Our current leader finished 373,975 for the 2014/2015 season.

Other interesting facts:
-The average score for Gameweek 25 among the top 10 was 73.7 points which is 18.7 points above average for the week.
-England maintains the lead for having the most players in the top ten. This week 40% of our leaders were from England followed by Australia, Ireland, Canada, Sweden, Scotland and Bosnia-Herzegovina each coming in with 10%.
-The average team value was £106.6 with £108.6 being the highest team value and £104.9 being the lowest value.
-29 points separates 1st place from 10th.

Best of luck in Gameweek 26!

    Evening all!!

How are we? So what’s everyone’s POA for this GW?

      NIN says:

Evening Mitro. I see you’ve been let back in. Jammy git. Anyway, your question. I binned the now useless Ward and got a brand new shiny Jose Fonte in to replace him. Made the move early for price reasons as my future plans, or the ideal one anyway, is tight on cash so the 0.2 difference this week will go a long way.

How about yourself buddy, what’s your thinkings?

      • Mitro says:

Thinking of deactivating my account and waiting until the new season starts tbh smile

It seems a decent move – the saints look solid at the moment! really haven’t got a clue on what to do with mine mate! Nothing seems to be working!

        • inittowinit says:

You shall do no such thing young man! Nobody quits around here. Just ask Mito. And NIN. smile

        • NIN says:

          laugh

It’s the chips mate, i’m sure of it. It’s proving very difficult to make up those extra points, especially after the woeful start 99% of us had this season. There’s a few non ideal spots there but even so i would consider saving the transfer. Either that or sell Bellerin and spread your cover a wee bit. Hard to see any team keeping Leicester out these days anyway.

        • Mitro says:

And benching either Mahrez or Alli when they get double digit scores!!

Im hoping my use of the chips towards the end of the season will make the difference!!

        • NIN says:

It will. With the DGW’s likely being late in the season the BB could still be quite lucrative even for those who have played the 2nd wildcard already. Obviously those with the wildcard will be seriously in business if their rank is decent – good at that time. Which it should be.

        • inittowinit says:

They’re distorting what we know and are used to NIN. I do wonder whether some percieved gaps are being looked into properly and taken into consideration. Even a 100 point gap may not be what it seems if the leader has burned the lot and the chaser has a full hand yet to play. What it may be doing is making some people panic and jump on differentials in an attempt to bridge what may be a false gap. That could be some peoples undoing actually and a huge lesson once we see how it all pans out over the course of a full season.

        • Mitro says:

Init – I agree – this BB Chip could get us a huge haul in the DGW!! We could be looking at 200 plus if everything goes our way!!

        • NIN says:

Yep, that will do it as well Mitro laugh

@init – This is very true. It’s all trial and error i suppose. I’m still glad i played my 2nd wildcard but the worry of others getting colossal hauls later in the season is very real. We shall see smile

        • KI says:

NIN and Init have it, wisdom as always. I did some careful examination of the folks ahead of me in my personal league, and the only one who has all his chips is only about 30 points ahead, with no Aguero (the median is two chips, including the second wc, with surprising use of BB).
The one I worry about is a former winner, 30 points behind, but making smart, measured moves. Now’s the time for caution.

        • inittowinit says:

Nice one Ki, sounds like you have the measure of them and also see what I’m preaching! Keep it nice and steady and hit them with your ammo when the time comes.

        • Thanks Ki, didn’t realize I was in your league.
