Fantasy Football World Cup 2022

Well, we never thought we’d be writing a World Cup article in November… never mind one about a World Cup in Qatar, but hey, money speaks, evidently. Whatever your feelings about this one it is here and it is happening so we may as well embrace it. After all… #footballscominghome

The good (?) people at FIFA, or to give them their new name FIFA+, have launched a fantasy game and as you’d expect we are all over it. The following is a run down of where to find it, how to play it, the fixtures, the deadlines and most importantly how you can join in the fun in the FF247 Regs League.

After that this article will act as a month long World Cup version of Live Match Chat. Much like the Champions League one does. In fact the whole game is very Champions League-like. If you have played that you will get the gist of this one pretty quickly, if not do not worry as we shall attempt to talk you through the basics below. Failing that just pop a comment in the chat below and we shall answer any query for you, regardless of how daft!

BTW… it’s coming home wink

The Game Itself
You can access the game here – https://play.fifa.com/fantasy-classic/

The FF247 Regs League
We are only running the one league and there is only one way to enter it…
Please email us on contact@fantasyfootball247.co.uk if you want the code for this one.

You must include your FF247 username and your FIFA+ Fantasy World Cup team name in the email, or we will simply ignore it.

The purpose of this one is that it is for folk who are on the FF247 forum regularly and taking part in the regular FF247 WC chat. Please don’t try to join if you aren’t. We will know, and we will boot you out.

The Regs Standings
This will be updated as we go along, as per the CL ones.

The Basics
You can access all of the rules themselves here but the main points are as follows…

Scoring
The scoring is similar to FPL only that keepers get 9 for scoring a goal (may as well be 25?!), defenders 7 and mids and fwds 5 each. Mids get 1 point extra for both 2 key passes and for every 3 tackles. Fwds get 1 point for every 2 shots on target.

Chips aka Boosters
Worth noting as there are a couple of odd ones…

‘Matchdays’
The stages are split into 7 different ‘matchdays’…

Players per team
As per CL this increases through the stages…

Amount of transfers
Likewise there are different stages to this…

Captain and Sub Rules
Those who are familiar with CL rules can skip this bit but for those who aren’t then this is super important. Basically you can keep changing your Captain Armband to another player who is yet to play, within each Matchday, until you land on one that you are happy with, as long as you do it before the next players game begins. Likewise with subs you can bring one in to replace a player who has played, but has perhaps not done as well as you would have liked. It’s basically rolling the dice until you are happy to stick.

MD5 Fixtures – QF’s (and possible SF’s)

How are you reading the rule on captain changes? In Euro we could have a different captain every day but here it seems you can change the captain unlimited times until he plays. But after he has played you’re allowed to change the captain “Once” again

It looks like gonna be as in FBL. Foe example, Round 1: You captain Kane who plays at 1 PM, if he fails, you can move the armband to a Dutch player who starts at 4 PM, if still not happy choose someone from Wales at 7 PM, of course providing that you have players from these games. The same applies for the rest of the matchdays.

      • inittowinit says:

That’s how I read it too and it’s usually the case with these tournament games that you can just keep going through them like a Rolodex.

        • inittowinit says:

They’ve reworded the rules on this now. You can change it just the once.

        • Chipster says:

That’s been the wording all along, I think. It’s poorly worded and very ambiguous, but I’m almost certain they are using “once more” here not in a literal sense, but more as a turn of phrase simply meaning “again”.

That makes more sense to me in light of the preceding paragraph in the rules that says “You can change your captain an unlimited amount of times, as long as the new selected captain is yet to play in the current matchday.” If you take the literal “once more” definition, then it’s false and redundant for the rules to include the sentence above about an unlimited amount of captain changes.

So I think you can keep changing captain as often as you like, provided that your newly selected captain hasn’t played yet in the matchday (gameweek). Anyway, that’s just my interpretation. I’m hoping I’m right unknw

        • Yes indeed, that’s how it should be worded.

        • inittowinit says:

Yes Chips, agree. Back to thinking you crack on as many times as you like. I just read it differently this morning. That said it was 7am!

        • Chipster says:

Glad you agree, Init. I’ve seen a lot of other content where the creators are taking the “once more” part very literally. Unless there is an official clarification/rewording of the rule, I genuinely think a lot of fantasy players will play with only two shots at their captain. Needless to say, I’m not bothering to try and correct the misapprehension elsewhere, but I’d hate for anybody from this site to miss out on unlimited captain changes cool.

        • inittowinit says:

I wanted to check as I’ve seen that too but more over I have the Ecuadorian keeper on day 1 and didn’t want to give him one of my only two shots!

        • Kop Warrior says:

There’s an article in the athletic which suggests you’ve only got two goes at the capo.

        • inittowinit says:

Well Chips says otherwise and I like his idea better so let’s go with that… rofl

        • OK, I will let you know on Monday night.
Going to create a B team containing players from the three games. Will start captain Kane, then move the armband to Depay and finish with Bale. Let’s see if it works laugh

        • inittowinit says:

Not like you to have a B team Ivan… oh, hang on… laugh

        • Init, it’s just an experiment rofl

        • The Padster says:

i’m going on this part of the rules..You can change your captain an unlimited amount of times, as long as the new selected captain is yet to play in the current matchday.

    *** Possible cheat alert ***
Because transfers can take place immediately within the week in play, I wonder if you could :
    I) Make your two transfers for your GW2 squad
ii) Once GW2 starts use your 2 GW3 transfers to change your GW2 squad again
I’m intending to WC for GW3 anyway

This is my first very quick draft.
It shows that if you want a strong field players you have to settle to a crap bench.
Surely there is a way for a more balanced team for which will find out eventually.

      OddDane says:

Oof. Cornelius I think is injured, at least he’s barely played, Mathias Jensen just returning back from injury I think, only two keepers and Olsen also recovering from injury.
Yep. This’ll be fine, nothing to see here, move along chaps.

      • Chipster says:

Do you think Maehle is a good pick, OD? I remember having him in the Euros and he was great. He’s a good price too, so is in my first draft team.

I also have Eriksen. What do you reckon on him?

        • OddDane says:

There’s still five players to be announced I think, but I’d think Maehle is a preferred option.
He’s not a safe starter with Atalanta but has started recently and seems to be doing ok, for the National team it feels like he has another gear though.

        • OddDane says:

Eriksen has had a more attacking/ playmaker role for the national team (than currently with ManU) and may be on some penalties too. I seem to recall he was a bit expensive though, so may backfire in that sense.

        • Chipster says:

Cheers for the info mate good

      • Dane, I think Maehle is a must at that price. 2 goals and an assist in Euro 2020 was memorable. A game vs Tunisia is a tasty fixture and apart from a CS we could get something extra from him wink

A trio of Dutchies like me ok. Could you fit a Frenchman in somehow? Looks good!

I wish they’d do the block capitals for all of the players (or as many as possible), I’m not great with first names!
