Fantasy Premier League 2016-17 Pre-Season Round up
Hellllllooooooooo FPL’ers! We’re back. It is that time of the year again when we begin to look ahead to how our 20 Premier League teams are preparing for this the most potentially cash-laden, superstar-fuelled, world class manager-jewelled season in history.
FPL will again afford us the chance to back our favourite players (which is of course price-dependent – but that’s for another article) but we need to know that they will be playing in a position worth having them, that they are in form, and more exciting perhaps, where the next bargain of the ‘Alli, Mahrez, Payet, Vardy’ ilk are to be found.
And so to assist us along the way this article is intended as a pre-season scrap book where we intend to record all teams pre-season fixtures and will include where possible all salient information as to who is scoring, who is assisting and who is looking hot and who isn’t.
I will do my best to get all information posted as swiftly as possible but it will all eventually appear here. I would appeal to you to follow my example and in the format of previous seasons assist me by including team news with substitutions, team formation information, goal scoring and assisting records and any other information FPL-relevant.
The main new addition here is that this article is linked in with the HOT COMMENTS section that appears above the Latest Comments. Basically we have created a comment link for each team. Simply scroll to the Hot Comments for the team you require info on and it’ll take you to their section and we will have all their pre-season info in one place courtesy of our fantastic community members.
The purpose of this is so that –
1. There is a specific place to post relevant pre-season info for each team –
Please post any findings – line-ups, signings, team news, match reports, etc…
2. It’s easy to find all the info.
Need to know the pre-season line-ups for Arsenal? Easy, just click on their link in Hot Comments and you will come to their hub.

Hull City friendly vs Mansfield 1-0 win, goal Bowen
Hull started in a 4-4-2 with Snodgrass and Maloney out wide. Maloney got a free kick and hit the top of the wall. Dawson left the game with an injury in the first half. Snodgrass also got a free kick which he sailed wide. Jakupovic and Tymon came in for Kuciak and Huddlestone commencing the 2nd half. Both Robertson and Huddlestone played a bit of CB in this game. Odemwingie came on for Maloney. Snodgrass came off for Hernandez in the 75th minute.

Sorry formation is wrong there I believe it is a 4-4-2 with Davies a CB and Luer up top with Diomande but I could be wrong.
With the injuries in defensive areas for Hull, there surely must be a 4.0 defender with a chance to start some games at the start of the season.. Who is that defender? Lenihan?
Hi Panda
The question is, will it be worth taking anyone at Hull? OK if you only use him ever as an emergency sub but I wouldn’t like to rely on anyone from them.
A lot will depend on who is signed in the next few weeks, surely there’ll be some reinforcements?

Cheers for all these reports lads, really great stuff. That Mahrez goal v Celtic was a thing of beauty. What a player.
Looks like Gray played as a striker and had some set pieces while Fuchs was not in there. 5.0 could end up being a steal in fpl

Thanks GP. These are invaluable mate.
I hope this result isn’t a sign of things to come for Leicester in the CL.
Morning Kop,
No problems.
I worry that the criss-crossing of the Atlantic will catch up with them later in the season. Last pre-season they played six games which were all in Britain. They aren’t used to this and add in the CL then it’s easy to see why some might say they’ll tail off but these are no mugs and I think they’ll start well but ultimately they aren’t going to defend the PL I think it is safe to say.
Fantasy-wise I’m certainly not ruling any of them out, that would be naive.
I’m not ruling them out either however I’m unlikely to have any of them come GW1. If I start with Kun, Ibra & Hazard it’s difficult to fit the likes of Mahrez & Vardy in.
My hopes for Musa and good top-level coverage went with Gray’s hat-trick yesterday

MattX prepared the following for us on the above match.
Round of applause for Matt here. Well done mate, greatly appreciated.
First Half
“No goals to report as of yet but it’s been an attacking first half. Liverpool youngsters have looked very sharp and energetic for the first game back, probably down to the fact that most need to impress before the Euro boys return”.
Karius- Untested basically just stuck in there to look pretty
Flanagan- steady performance from him. Intelligent tackling and getting forward well.
Matip- going forward for setpieces but has been quiet for most of the game, when on the ball mostly calm but odd time can play a sloppy pass. Decent debut for a bystander
Lovren- going forward for setpieces as well. Has been making get tackles the odd time Tranmere do counter attack has been decent today.
Smith- Looked very sharp, bombing down the left and playing in a lot of crosses, possibly falling into the same thing Moreno does in that he gets forward but then leaves too much space in behind him for Tranmere to exploit.
Lucas- Been doing the business and showing his experience
Brannagan- Impressive, showing good vision and making some brilliant through balls for Mane, Kent to run onto.
Ejaria-Very impressed by this ex-Arsenal youngster, tall but fast and has some quick feet. He looked very comfortable on the ball and was looking to set up plays and involved in a lot of attacks. Draws a lot of fouls from opposition players.
Mane- Getting in behind the Tranmere backline and making nice passes and linking up well with Firmino
Kent- Linking up well with others and getting some shots off but himself and Smith on the left are attacking at the same time so the whole left side is empty so needs to work on that but he’s only young
Firmino- Off the boil in the first half, when he gets a chance tries to be too flashy and it doesnt help but he is linking up well with Mane.
Second Half
“Probably should have been more goals with Markovic missing two glorious chances one of them an open goal that he hit the post instead”.
Bogdan- Bystander!! I think he touched the ball once and that was when it was passed back to him.
Randall- Got forward really well, Was probably Liverpool’s most attacking player in the second half and was the main outlet for them.
Ilori-Quiet didn’t have much to do, if anything
Wisdom- Much the same as Ilori did show good strength to muscle lads of the ball though
Moreno- Seems to have grown a ponytail during the holidays so he must want to be the new Andy Carroll, had a decent night did what he does normally
Chirivella- Thought he was very quiet but not much to do in the 2nd half so maybe that’s why I didn’t notice him much.
Stewart- Made some tidy passes, really controlled the pace of the game I feel, showed some good vision when picking long diagonal balls to Randall.
Alexander-Arnold- Made some nice runs at players to push them back, seems like a confident lad and made a nice charging run which set up the goal just before he laid in a nice pass for Ings
Markovic-Sell him fast!! In my opinion he was poor and missed 2 great opportunities that won’t help his first team chances.
Woodburn- Looked decent on the left and didn’t have too many chances but was unlucky when he had a shot cleared off the line.
Ings- Captain for the 2nd half and was working hard throughout. Thoroughly deserved his goal unlucky not to have scored more.
Fleetwood Town 0-5 Liverpool FC
Scorers= Grujic, Woodburn, Lucas, Firmino, Firmino
First half XI
Karius
Flanagan, Matip, Lovren, Moreno
Stewart, Grujic
Markovic, Alexander-Arnold, Mane
Ings
Karius -> More involved today but it’s all passing out of the back and possession with him and the CBs
Flanagan -> Doing the job up and down the right but has left Fleetwood in once or twice and one of those times should have resulted in an equaliser for Fleetwood.
Matip -> Both CBs and GK passing ball around nicely and playing out of the back well, showed some nice feet to keep the ball at times
Lovren -> Getting the ball out of defence nicely not much to do though.
Moreno -> Assist after overlapping with Mane, Linking really well with him and Alexander, makes the odd rushed tackle but he hasn’t been made to pay for it. Very Impressive though.
Stewart -> Making nice tackles and passes but not too involved, he’s playing more defensive than offensive maybe to let Grujic to attack more.
Grujic -> Very Strong and Tall. Had some quick feet to win the penalty. Scored a nice goal from just inside the box after a cross from Moreno. Has been very involved in play could have had another goal or two as he hit the post as well.
Markovic -> Playing much better than last game, trying harder this time by making some nice runs and some good passes could maybe have took a shot for a goal but a poor touch forced him to pass it to Alexander instead.
Alexander -> Getting into space well, making nice runs and playing good passes. Has been linking well with Mane and Moreno the team of them making bits of the Fleetwood RB. His positional play has been excellent
Mane -> Playing well down the left and is attacking well, as I’ve said his link play with Moreno and Alexander has been great. Beating his man easily and could have had a few assists if his final ball was better.
Ings -> Missed a penalty, not looking very confident while taking it. Had a very quiet game was not very good tonight.
Second half XI
Bogdan
Randall, Wisdom, Ilori, Smith
Lucas, Brannagan
Kent, Ejaria, Woodburn
Firmino
Bogdan -> Made two saves but they were routine, comfortable ones.
Randall -> Got forward well and linked up well with Kent.
Wisdom -> Him and Ilori were leaving a big gap between them for a good bit of the 2nd half which was inviting the Fleetwood players onto them, but Wisdom was physical in tackles
Ilori -> Nearly invisible in the game and gave away a few balls
Smith -> Playing well with Woodburn but some of his passes were too heavy so they were going to no one a lot of the time.
Lucas -> Made important interventions at times and also HE BLOODY SCORED!!! A great assist by Kent and a nice finish for Lucas
Brannagan -> Nice vision, looks comfortable on the ball and was good in possession for the most part but as the half wore on he did lose it a few times. Closed down players quickly which will make Klopp happy.
Kent -> Made lovely runs and showed great pace throughout the half. He used that pace and quick feet to cut inside and take shots on numerous occasions. Made a great assist for Woodburn after a brilliant run and showed he’s not selfish as he could have shot himself. Another great run lead to the Lucas goal.
Ejaria -> Not as influential as the other night but still good. At the start of the half he was coming too deep and this isolated Firmino up top. By coming too deep to get the ball it often times meant he was late arriving to attack. A brilliant pass through to Woodburn led to a goal.
Woodburn -> Very good play tonight for a 16 year old. He held up play brilliantly. Finished nicely for his goal and was linking with Kent so well. Assisted Firmino’s second and Liverpool’s last after a great run down the left into space.
Firmino -> Making runs which was pulling defenders away and leaving space for Kent and Woodburn to run into. At times early in the half he wasn’t in the box/place at the right time so a lot of chances went begging but made up for it later on with 2 nice goals.
Some overall thoughts:
In the first half the pace was slower but Liverpool were an older side then but still showed some good attack especially the trio of Moreno, Alexander and Mane. The backline were playing a lot of the back and got out of some situations with smart passes. In the second half, the pace quickened as you could see that the young players were on and wanted to impress while they got the chance. The backline in the second half were poor for me I don’t think they were anywhere as good as the first 4 so Klopp won’t have too much of a headache with that four anyway. Lastly, Marko Grujic had a phenomenal debut game and could be a real FPL pick if he gets started.
Excellent Matt.
Thank you.
Brilliant work Matt, thank you. I just tweeted the link to the comment too.
And I retweeted it.
So, yeah.

First Half XI
Karius
Randall Matip Lovren Flanagan
Stewart Brannagan
Mane Ejaria Couthino
Firmino
Karius -> Calm, Collected and Commanding of his box but he got overconfident at one point and nearly let Wigan in to score.
Randall -> Getting forward well but wasn’t really decisive with the ball.
Matip -> Got up well at set pieces and was comfortable with the ball.
Lovren -> Did the job but was quiet overall
Flanagan -> Quiet game didn’t hear his name much but all attack was coming down the right.
Stewart -> Winning balls well and making good interceptions.
Brannagan -> Winning balls well and making good interceptions but was also very good at taking on men and winning fouls -> Decent deliveries on set pieces
Ejaria -> Position play and vision was superb again but wasn’t the best at shooting.
Couthino -> Hit the Post and the Crossbar in the half, was very lively and really unlucky not to score.
Mane -> Making nice runs to get onto the end of passes from Firmino and Couthino, had a quieter game as the half wore on.
Firmino -> Looked very good, showing nice skill and quick feet and linked up with Couthino as if they hadn’t stopped playing together.
Second half XI
Karius
Wisdom Matip Ilori Randall
Lucas Alexander-Arnold
Kent Markovic Woodburn
Ings
Karius -> Nothing to do
Wisdom -> Not really needed
Matip -> Made a great run out from the back which set up a brilliant chance at the other end
Ilori -> Not really needed
Randall -> Didn’t really do much in the 2nd half
Lucas -> Nearly scored again!! Made some great runs and nice passes
Alexander -> Confident and makes great runs, again not too good at shooting thought more of a playmaker.
Kent -> Good feet and unlucky not to score. Made brilliant runs throughout the match and played a great pass through to Woodburn for his goal.
Markovic -> Does nothing in the match really, just kind of wanders around but Wigan did lose the ball in their half which fell to him and he got the assist for Ings’ goal.
Woodburn -> Another great goal! Made a brilliant run and finished like a seasoned striker. Was very comfortable on the ball and in my mind is developing nicely.
Ings -> Quick feet and looked good in this game, got a nice goal with a good finish.
Thoughts: Better opposition in this game which meant Liverpool weren’t as dominant but they weren’t under pressure either. As the 1st half wore on the tempo dropped as Wigan seemed to settle into the game more and got more confident.
2nd half was better for Liverpool as either Wigan dropped in standard or Liverpool stepped it up a gear but I’m not 100% clear.
I think the 4 youngsters that have really impressed that should give Klopp some decent options for cup games would be Kent, Woodburn, Alexander and Ejaria. Woodburn maybe too young yet to throw in there but I think a loan move could be perfect for him.
*Matip went off in the 88 min with what looked like an injury but maybe it was cramp or tiredness don’t know yet.
Another quality review Matt. Thanks mate
No bother Kop. Have you heard anything on Matip yet? I haven’t seen anything about him going off yet.
Not really Matt. I know it’s his ankle that was giving him problems.
Yeah I just found an interview on the Liverpool site with Klopp saying he should be grand after a rest tomorrow.
Liverpool 2-0 Huddersfield
Goalscorers= Grujic (assisted by Firmino), Moreno penalty (won by Kent)
First half XI
Karius
Randall Lucas Lovren Moreno
Stewart Grujic
Mane Ejaria Couthino
Firmino
Karius -> Always looking for a short pass from kick outs which isn’t working out for him the way Huddersfield are playing. Made a great save and has been more involved in this match.
Randall -> Pressing well and making Huddersfield hurry their passes. Very attacking down the right and is linking well with Mane.
Lucas -> Breaking up plays and attacking from the back but you can tell he’s not a defender.
Lovren -> Not having the best game, with Lucas not being a natural defender maybe this is making Lovren a bit nervier but he has been making some sloppy passes.
Moreno -> Making good attacking runs but not really doing too much defending.
Stewart -> Working well with Grujic to break up plays. One wins the ball while the other takes it away from danger. Made a good few blocks to make up for when the defence let Huddersfield in.
Grujic -> Doing well with playing passes and is surprisingly good at DM!! Another great goal with a brilliant touch from a Firmino cross.
Mane -> Good interplay between front three, came close to scoring a few times. Goal not given as ref felt he has committed a foul but he didn’t. Won a penalty after a brilliant breakaway.
Ejaria -> Been doing all the work so the other three can make runs and get into space.
Coutinho -> Missed a penalty, been unlucky tonight but has been trying to be too flashy at times.
Firmino -> Putting Keeper under pressure by pressing high. Linked well with Mane for the first goal.
Second half XI
Karius
Alexander-Arnold Wisdom Lovren Moreno
Stewart Lucas
Woodburn Markovic Kent
Ings
Karius -> was good in the 2nd half did everything right.
Alexander -> Was a decent LB. He made really good runs and played in some nice crosses. He’s a very impressive young man.
Lovren -> Slipping all over the place
Wisdom -> Quiet game but made good tackles when needed.
Moreno -> Scored a penalty but everyone wanted George to take it!!
Stewart -> had a quieter 2nd half
Lucas -> Sadly got injured in the 61 min.
Woodburn -> Made runs but was effected by the Lucas injury so his impact wasn’t much.
Markovic -> Did nothing!!!
Kent -> Decent runs again and won a penalty at the end after another great run.
Ings -> Made runs but was not up top for the majority of the 2nd half so didn’t really get to do much.
Lucas pulled his hamstring in the 61st minute so Woodburn dropped deeper into midfield and then Liverpool’s backup GK George came on to play up top after wandering around for a minute.
George-> Star man for us!! His first touch played Ings through on goals but the ball just ran too long and into the goalies hands.
Thoughts= Liverpool pressed high up the pitch and are working at a higher tempo, seem to be moving up gears as games go on. Slick passes and one touch football is making it tough for Huddersfield. 2nd half was all Huddersfield. The injury to Lucas made it a frustrating half and a fairly poor one as well.
Great stuff Matt! Many thanks. I don’t care if nothing else happens now in pre-season, Liverpool playing their youth team keeper up front will be hard to forget or indeed surpass! #OOP
I loved when he came on and you could clearly see the lads asking him where he is playing and he didn’t have a clue!! Klopp was having a great laugh when he was subbing him on
That’s why we all love Klopp in a nutshell!
Haha yes it is!!
Thanks Matt. I think it’s time for Markovic to fck off!!
Exactly!! We’re basically paying him to run around like a headless chicken (no offence Init)
Also just to add to my analysis, our star man George managed to get passed the defence and actually lobbed the keeper but the linesman was a party pooper and called it back for offside (it was only a foot off!!)
None taken. We have you and GP to do that for us on the pre-season stuff :winktongue:
Haha too right mate!!

I wouldn’t read much into that Moreno assist, that was all Origi. Great finish by the lad.
I would read into that Firimino man-bun though, that was hideous.

Nice one Kop. I see Wigan are milking it and play Liverpool tomorrow as well! Some of the lads at footy were saying they are going to both. Odd thing was the same tickets on both days were £15 for today and just £10 tomorrow! £5 premium to see Jose’s first game I guess.
Probably more chance of the casual supporter going to a game on a Saturday afternoon as well. They got 7k mancs at it which ain’t bad.

Thanks for this Matt
I read in the report that it was played in sweltering heat. Mkhitaryan goal will please his owners.
No worries GP. I want to see Martial play as well to see which of the two is the better option.
Nice to see Bailly and Shaw getting the full 90, United still need a lot of work though, especially in central/defensive midfield and this result highights that quite wel
mata has been influential in these games . regular game time at 7.5, could be a great option.

Boro continued their winning start to pre-season with a 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium.
The away side took the lead early in the first half thanks to a deflected effort from Stewart Downing, while Alex Pattison doubled the advantage late on.
Viktor Fischer made his Boro bow in the second period, as Aitor Karanka once again changed his full 11 at the interval.

Negredo has scored in his debut!
Good good. Really need a cheap and cheerful but reliable 3rd striker to make this Kun/Ibra thing work! Really don’t fancy Gray although I gues Long is the same price.

Matt
Can’t find much but this from the official club feed.
I’m guessing right wing for Fischer.
De Roon came on for twenty minutes in central midfield but did this:
Ah right okay cheers GP. I’ll keep an eye on them 1 Mil is a big difference this year but if De Roon gets forward a good bit could be good at 4.5
