Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks Game-week 6

Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks Game-week 3Welcome to Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks Game-week 6. I sit penning this article on the morning of my birthday, and the football gods have given me a number on wonderful birthday presents. Jose Mourinho is surely unhappy after his team got whapped by Watford, and that makes me happy. Stoke were down two goals in the first fifteen minutes of their game and that makes me quite happy. Better yet, they look poised for relegation. This would make me infinitely happy.

I started thinking about the best birthday presents I ever received, and the ones that stick out the most are from my childhood. So that got me thinking: what would the best birthday present of all time look like for adult me? It would start with a lifetime contract for Jose Mourinho to manage Stoke and the team then being relegated to level 8 football. Tony Pulis would be magically transformed into a parrot that sits on Jose’s shoulder and the only thing it knows how to say is “Pep is the Special One”. The team would have to attend weekly philosophy lessons taught by new team captain Joey Barton. And Jose could not simply quit the team or get fired after alienating the entire dressing room. He could not leave his post until he held a presser to extol the talents of Arsene Wenger and Rafa Benitez. AND he had to let Ryan Shawcross marry into his family. If someone can arrange this it would be a boss birthday gift.

And with Stoke now down 3-0, I really should turn my attention back to this article before they go down 4-0 and I start dancing in the street.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at our options…

FIXTURES

Manchester United vs Leicester

Bournemouth vs Everton

Liverpool vs Hull

Middlesbrough vs Spurs

Stoke vs West Brom

Sunderland vs Crystal Palace

Swansea vs Manchester City

Arsenal vs Chelsea

West Ham vs Southampton

Burnley vs Watford

And it’s 4-0 to Crystal Palace!!!

The Obvious Choices: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (home vs Leicester) and Sergio Aguero (away vs Swansea)
The talents of these men are well known and are oft discussed on the site. Slapping the armband on either, especially given their foes this week, would be a wise bit of business and a decision you could make early in the week. But with Ibra scoreless in his last two, and Aguero coming back from a suspension, there may be reason to traverse a Road Less Travelled this week. So whilst either may be the safe play, Kun maybe more so, let’s take a look at our other options…

[divider_1px]

Raheem Sterling (away vs Swansea)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]
Following a messy divorce from Liverpool it seemed like Sterling never got comfortable in his first season with City. After a string of poor performances he eventually lost his spot in the starting XI and was dubbed by Yahoo Sport as the worst signing of the season. Whether by the departure of a lame duck manager, the arrival of the Real Special One or a young man who has finally grown up, it is clear the talented midfielder has found his game once again. Through five games he has scored half as many goals as he did in all of last year, and his three assists have already bested last season’s total of two. One could argue he is the hottest player in the league right now. If you don’t already own him, you should bring him in. Either way, he is one to be considered for captain this week against a Swansea team in the midst of a difficult run of fixtures and form.

Anyone from Liverpool! (home vs Hull)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]
Which one was the best out of The Beatles? It probably just came down to personal preference really as they were all very good and any one of them could shine at any given moment. You see where we are going with this… of course you do, there are a myriad of options in the Liverpool midfield and ask 4 people now which one of Coutinho, Mane, Firmino or even Lallana to buy into and you may well get 4 different answers. But hey, we are the Captains team here not the Tips one, so basically whichever of the remaining rascals you own then they are all viable options for the armband this week. Only Man City and Arsenal have scored more than Liverpool so far this season and there are definite signs that the Klopp influence is growing and they are taking on board his philosophies. Hull had been nobody’s fools up until Arsenal stuck four past them, which maybe showed their weakness in dealing with an incisive attack, and so a home game against perceived weaker opposition for a Klopp side built on incisiveness may not be the worst place to start when looking for a captain this week.

Michail Antonio (home vs Southampton)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]
Speaking of hot starts, how about five goals in five weeks? The 28 year-old journey-man who started his career at non-league Tooting & Mitcham United has made his mark on the young season and more than helped his club deal with the injury absence of £35 million talisman Andy Carroll. Unlike Capoue’s record, Antonio’s past suggest a scoring touch… albeit not at this pace. He was named Nottingham Forrest’s Player of the Year after notching a career-best 14 goals in club’s 2014-15 Championship campaign. As a moderately-priced midfielder he is easy to bring into your team and should be given honest consideration for the captain’s armband. Let’s be honest: if his last name was Aguero, and he cost twice as much, you would not think twice about it.

[divider_1px]

Romelu Lukaku (away vs Bournemouth)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]
Not everyone’s cup of tea due to his streaky nature is one Romelu Lukaku. With three and a half goals and an assist in his last two matches the talented Belgian belongs on this list, but his tendency to run hot/cold scares off many a fantasy manager. He appears to have rediscovered his touch following a busy summer, and last season’s career-high goal tally of 18 suggests bigger things could be on the horizon if he can be a bit more consistent. When hot, he can vault you up the standings. When cold, he will make you question your sanity. The true gambler’s dream is our final nod for captain this week. Just remember: you were warned.

PUNT TIME! – Etienne Capoue (away vs Burnley)
[three_fourth padding=”0 20px 0 0″]

[/three_fourth]
After four goals in five games it is time to think this might not just be a hot streak. It is rare for a player to discover a scoring touch at the age of 28 but perhaps he is the exception to that rule. Just how remarkable has his performance been? Well, in 33 appearances last season the Frenchman scored a grand total of… zero goals. In fact, entering this season he had just 14 career goals. He surely benefits from defences keying on forwards Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo, but scoring nine or more points in four out of five matches suggests this might not be a fluke. Can he keep it up? Probably not at this pace, but he has all the confidence in the world right now and will continue to fire away until the goals dry up. I do not recall anyone ever seriously recommending a player under £5.0 as captain, but his performance thus far means he should be considered. One for the brave!

Who’s a better fit – firmino or sterling? I already have Kun coverage. Thanks smile

Hi Guys! First time posting on here but I need some help.

Whats your thoughts on Gundogan? He seems to have been overlooked. Alongside De Bruyne he’s looked good, scoring 2 in 2, and for £5.4m seems a bargain for city midfield coverage. (I already have Sterling).

I’m aware the lad probably won’t start every game in a full strength city side, but with Nolito banned and Silva injured I’m very tempted to bring him in as I don’t currently have Aguero.

    Thanks!

Hi cake, I believe GP brought him in last week and very much enjoyed his goal! He’s so cheap because he’s supposed to be a DM but obviously Pep is using him further forward as one of the four behind the forward in a central position with Fernandinho sitting. I’d say that’s very much Silva’s spot so I think you’d get away with it for a bit until he’s back but there will always be rotation anyway as Silva obviously needs to be managed carefully.

        Thanks init!

The plan would be to have him in as I free up cash to bring Aguero back in for their next home fixture (I’ve already used my WC). My squad is pretty strong, and Im in a solid position overall points wise, and this would allow me to transition him back in without taking a points hit.

I agree. He’s looked great both games. Driving into the box on a number of occasions. I think he got an assist against Borrusia too! To be honest, you could choose any of those 4 that sit behind Aguero. Someone has to pass to the main man I guess!

Eating too much cake so you can’t answer?

Not being overlooked he just won’t be their keyplayer. If you want a cheap mid I’d rather have a keyplayer at a mid ranked team than a DM that might not start for City. So Capoue, Chadli or way more interesting.

      • eatcake says:

        Thanks Raziel!

Yeah completely agree he wouldnt be their key player. I’d only have him in until I bring back Aguero vs Everton at home. But I wouldnt be surprised if Pep actually favours him over Silva in the long run. It looks as though both will be out for at least the next couple of weeks. Both games he’s been played as an attacking midfielder alongside De Bruyne in one of the 4 behind Aguero, with only Fernandinho holding.

My logic is I need as many players who can pass to Aguero in my side until I bring Aguero back in haha. At the moment I have Sanchez, Sterling, Firmino and Antonio in midfield already, with Costa and Lukaku up top. So should do a job until that moment.

I just hate taking a hit with points, and I’ve already used my WC.

who is the best liverpool midfielder to replace ozil for a -4 hit??

      PunkDragon says:

for a 4 point hit this weekend, not so sure … but firminio kinda picks himself at this moment, although sturridge might play since he was left out the cup tournament. coutinho looks good and so does mane and lallana as well. tough one there

      • Neo says:

As a Liverpool fan without an unbiased view, I picked Mane as my replacement this week for Hazard (though I did take another hit to bring in Firmino).

Firmino is in superb form now but he usually scores FPL points when against the ‘big’ teams whilst Mane seems like the one that will explode against your opponents which is why I went with Mane.

Just not Coutinho though, as he is not guaranteed to start

    Neo says:

Since this is a captain’s article, I’ve one question that I’ve been struggling with for the past 2 seasons. I’ve been doing ok and my usual strategy is to play is safe and captain the obvious candidates although I noticed that those who do well tend to pick differentials for captains.

What’s the take on captain choices then? When is it a time to pick differentials and when is it time for Aguero?

For me this week it’s either Firmino/Mane or Aguero and so it would be good if I can understand your thought processes in deciding your captains. Cheers lads!

      inittowinit says:

I’d love to captain Firmino this week but I just think Kun is too dangerous right now. He usually is anyway but in this team he could be even more so.

      • Neo says:

My front 7 this week would be:

Sterling Mane (VC) Firmino Ozil Antonio
        LKK Aguero (C)

        Appreciate all the input lads

        • DMC says:

Neo – Difficult to look beyond Sergio with that front 7.
I see what you mean on the differential capo thing. If you look at the best player each week it probably wont be one of the big hitters.
The twist though is that you probably wont even have the best player for a given week let alone have him as capo.
More often than not Kun, Ibra, Alexis or the like will be the best performer In your team week In week Out, so, unless you want to buy and capo someone each week and get really lucky, that’s that.
I think it was Albertini that pointed out In a marvellous interview with Cookie two seasons Ago that you could chase a differential when the captain pols show a balance In terms that no one is highly chosen as capo. In such cases, the risk is lower given that you wont miss too much If someone like Kun explodes and at the same time you can benefit from your differential capo If he goes big.
Anyway this probably requires a more complete and consistent approach but Im on my mobile here and just trying to contribute with something regarding an issue that I see as one of the holly grails of fpl – choosing your skipper!
Thx for bringing this up and good luck with your capo Choice this week.
