And then there were four. It’s semi-final time at the World Cup and very much a South America vs Europe affair. We’ve said a sad farewell to Colombia, who received an amazing reception when they returned to Bogota. Also offski are Costa Rica, who played with so much heart and a stubborn defence throughout the tournament, while Belgium and France have also exited stage left.

Our first semi-final sees hosts Brazil take on the World Cup’s Herr Consistent, Germany. Since 1950, the Germans have failed to reach at least the quarter-final stage on just one occasion and will be looking to add to their three stars by going all the way. Brazil, of course, will have home support on their side – unfortunately for them they won’t have influential defender and captain Thiago Silva or their main attacking threat, Neymar, on their side – they are ruled out through suspension and injury respectively. But it’s ok, Germany have Mesut Ozil, which evens things up somewhat. The Germans were back to their robotic best in disposing of France, while Brazil produced their best display of the tournament, certainly in the first half as they fought, literally, past the plucky Colombians.

The second semi brings together Argentina and the Netherlands, both of whom have somewhat stuttered through so far. The Dutch needed penalties to find a way past Costa Rica, which will be an obvious concern for LVG as he attempts to plot a way past the Argentinian defence which has kept two clean sheets in a row. If recent form is anything to go, goals may be at a premium here, so it may just be a moment of magic from Lionel Messi, Arjen Robben, Gonzalo Higuain or RvP which settles the tie. Worth noting that Angel Di Maria has been ruled out with injury, but better news of Sergio Aguero, who is expected to have recovered from (his latest) injury in time for the showdown.

Yup, The B has definitely knocked me out. He’s got a 9 pt lead, and I’ll only get 10 CS pts. He’s surely got at least 1 defender/mid in this game. Congratulations on reaching the final B:

Ok, it’s all over now. Sad but true. Don’t like the tactics van Gaal used. In the first 4 matches he played counter football which is best for this team. Got to say big up to this team since it consists out of 6 Eredivisie players which many consider a mickey mouse league. laugh

Anyway, I’m sad. Just wanted the Dutch to hold the Worldcup 1 time. Figured that it was nothing going to happen again after the chances we missed in ’74, ’78 and ’10. Lost 3 times in the finals. Guess we’ll be losers for the rest of our life. Sighs.Whatever.

Yes unlucky Raz, you were my first thought when it went to pens to be honest. But you’ve had a great run and as Cookie says we’d have been delighted to have been involved longer than 2 group games never mind having the excitement you guys have had along the way. Be proud.

      • Raziel says:

Yeah, I like the guys in our team. That’s why it sucks. They’re not stuck up. They’re kids playing in the Dutch league. Never expected they’d come this far. I actually have little problem with losing. The fact we’ve been so close to the WC and lost it 3 times in the finals is the only damaging thing.

In the past never been a fan of Germany but this worldcup I have been. Hope they win their 4th or 5th? Saw a clip of the Argentinean players singing/dissing the Brazilians after the Switzerland game. Don’t like unsportsmanlike. Also, after the Brazilians lost yesterday the Argentinean version of Match of the Day called the Brazlians girls, crybaby’s, gay. Rivalry is one thing, this is taking it to another level. This will leave a hole in Brazil they can’t ever cope with for the next 25 years of Argentina do win the final.

        So GO GERMANY. laugh

Agreed Raz, I prefer losing with dignity (Potty may disagree on that after my CL strop, lol) but the way they have rubbed it in is distasteful. We are supoosed to dislike the Germans over here but to be honest they are a likeable bunch also and have been my favourite team in the comp so far along with Colombia so I hope they go on and finish the job. I think they will.
