Welcome to FPL Captain Picks GW30

It has been a painfully slow period for us fantasy managers. Not only have we all had to deal with a blank weekend due to the International Break, but we now have to also deal with a blank weekend due to the FA Cup quarter finals – although some DGW’s will now be announced in due course (see our fixture tracker below).

As for the armband this week, it could be a tricky one, especially with Haaland coming off injured ahead of Leicester at home. Here are Jamie Mc and Matt to advise us further.

Jamie Mc – Man City vs Leicester (H)
Moving onto the business end of the season and in particular this midweek game week then who should you be considering for the captain’s armband? With a home fixture against relegation bound Leicester City, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (£14.8m & 31.1% ownership) would in any other season be an automatic captain choice. Just to recap, Haaland is the fifth highest points scorer and second place for all forwards in the game with 171 points. Haaland has still scored twenty-one goals making him the second top goal scorer in the game. With the threat of missing out on Champions League qualification then City have a more than decent run of fixtures until the end of the season with no team higher than eighth place in the current Premier League table. If Haaland doesn’t recover or you simply cannot afford him or want to risk him, then you may want to consider his team-mate Omar Marmoush (£7.3m & 13.7% ownership). Marmoush has settled well into the City team and has started all but one of his seven league appearance scoring four goals (granted three goals in one game) and one assist during this period.

Jamie Mc – Salah vs Everton (H)
With nothing else to play for, Liverpool will be looking to win the Premier League to give Arne Slot a title win in his first season as Liverpool manager and perhaps Mo Salah’s (£13.7m & 69.6% ownership) a title win in his last season as a Liverpool player. There is nothing more that can be said about Salah that has not already been said. With a best ever 306 points, twenty-seven goals and seventeen assists then Salah is the obvious captain choice for this game week. Granted Liverpool have a slightly more difficult fixture than City with the Merseyside Derby at home to Everton.

Jamie Mc – Isak vs Brentford (H)

Move over “Super Mac,” Kevin and Al… Newcastle United has a new hero to rejoice. I think it is fair to say that Alexander Isak (£9.3m & 53.2% ownership) will never have to buy a drink in Newcastle ever again. With European football secured for next season via Europa Conference League, Newcastle United should be looking to improve the feel-good factor by securing a top four league finish and qualify for the Champions League for next season. With a decent run of fixtures until game week thirty six, a double in game week thirty two and three home fixtures over the four league games then not only is Isak a possible captain pick with a home fixture against Brentford but very much an incoming transfer if you removed him because of the blank game week twenty nine. Isak is the sixth highest points scorer and third place for all forwards in the game with 169 points. Isak has scored nineteen goals making him the third top goal scorer in the game. Isak has also created five assists this season. For those younger readers then the Newcastle United goal scoring legends are of course Malcolm “Super Mac” MacDonald, Kevin Keegan, and Alan Shearer. Afterthought, I wonder if our very own Rosco has sobered up yet; well done mate in finally seeing your beloved Toon win a trophy.

Matt – Mateta vs Southampton (A)

The Nearly Headless Horseman is back! Jean Phillipe Mateta almost got his head knocked off a few weeks ago against Millwall and missed a few weeks but he is back in training and wearing a mask. He has been a superhero for me in the darkness of a poor season. For many people, Mateta has saved a lot of red arrows and scored plenty goals yet he is still only owned by 5.6% of managers. His ownership has always remained low. This is possibly due to the fact the likes of Wissa, Haaland, Isak, Watkins, Wood and Cunha have all been ticking away with the goals. They are maybe in sexier teams or also they have more penalty duties where as Mateta sometimes shares with Eze.

He is pretty much a nailed 90-minute man. Maybe he will come off a bit earlier sometimes but I wouldn’t fear that. The only game he has missed since GW19 is the match against Ipswich before the break. Since GW19 and the turn of the year, the Frenchman has been on absolute fire! He has only blanked once in the games he has played with a blank in GW19 and a blank in GW23. Outside of that he has 8 goals and 1 assist since January 1st. This is a brilliant return of points. Coming up against Saints this week should be a lovely chance for him to make up for missing the Ipswich game as Saints are probably the worst PL team I’ve ever seen! What also makes Mateta a great pick not just for the armband but to have him in your team is the fact he could have FIVE games in the next three gameweeks with a possible double double in 32 and 33! They might not be the nicest fixtures but you are getting a talismanic striker who is in fine form! If you’re into the xG and xA, then you’ll be happy to know that Mateta is bang on with his stats 12 goals with an xG of 11.4 and 2 assists with an xA of 2.1. I have owned him for weeks and he won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

The confessional…

This is where we keep forgetting to ask our entire writing team to tell us who they think they will pick this week… We will update this by 10pm on Monday!

I see a lot still with Palmer. Do you all think he’s ‘due’ and will get some points or is it not too late for a switch to Bruno or maybe Eze?
