FPL Ramblings
I don’t do intros if I can help it and that will not change today.
Here we go.
Team of the Week
David de Gea led all keepers this week in points with 7, a couple of great saves helped United to their first clean sheet of the season.
Varane made his first start and went out and had the highest score for any defender with 12. His assist, three bonus and clean sheet all helped him stand out this GW. Perhaps a little lucky though to get the six extra points. Think most of us would give Greenwood a lot of credit for the goal as he had a ton of work to do after receiving the pass from Rafa.
Seamus Coleman made the team after snagging a clean sheet accompanied by an assist for winning a penalty. The last one on this list
Sergio Reguilon was perhaps the most impressive one as he had no aid from attacking returns and still managed to grab the three bonus to help him make the team of the week.
In midfield we have City’s Ferran Torres with 18 points. That score easily made him the top scorer this week. His movement looked great and he got into some great positions to score, having said that, they won’t be playing Arsenal every week. At his price point though he certainly is intriguing if you are willing to play Pep roulette.
Gallagher from Palace also made the side. He scored a brace and grabbed the 3 bonus. At 5.5 he also seems very interesting for managers, but his fixtures say otherwise. Despite passing the eye test, I still want to see him put in another decent score or two before I contemplate ownership.
Buendia scored a goal and took home the top honours for bonus points. No consideration in buying here as Villa’s fixtures turn cruel and he is joining the Argentinian team so will have to quarantine when he gets back, which means he is definitely out GW4.
Son is the last of the mids. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. Make a cross and watch the keeper watch it go in. Earn yourself a goal and some bonus for a mistake, life is good. With Palace in his next fixture, Son does seem like a good player to own right now, perhaps a back to back appearance on the team of the week could be in his future.
Gabriel Jesus is once again in the team after scoring, picking up an assist and the 3 bonus. All that despite only playing 60 minutes which is impressive but also a problem as his minutes could get very irritating if you are an owner.
Jamie Vardy matched Jesus with 12 points collecting them in a similar manner in the Leicester 2-1 win over Norwich.
The last man on the team hasn’t left the best XI since the start of fpl. That is three straight weeks for Michail Antonio on here. Just incredible, something we will touch on a bit more later.
Quick Notes
– Adama Traore has become to this article what Giroud is to GABO. He must be mentioned!!
– Traore is top 10 in expected assists, expected goals, shots, expected fpl points and trucking defenders. Yet he is on six points. FFS!
– Last week I showed concern for Ings owners by mentioning he only had 3 shots in 2 games (1.5 spg), well he brought that average down, now he has 4 shots in 3 games (1.3 spg).
– Wolves are extremely unlucky to have zero points so far, Arsenal is extremely lucky they don’t allow teams to have negative points in the standings.
– Richarlison provides great drama.
– Last week I said “Let me repeat, DCL on pens, sign me up please.” assuming he is fit, I am still on this bus, have been since GW1.
– Antonio is leading fpl by 10 points, scoring double digits in all 3 fixtures so far with at least one goal and one assist each game.
– Michail also leads in shots and shots in the box, plus all that XGoals stuff, if you are still holding out, ufff.
– TAA is exactly what we thought he was. His fixtures, underlying stats and fpl points scream keep him at all costs. Figure out a different way to get Ronaldo.
– Gallagher is not just pretty hair, put him on your watch list.
– Last week I made fun of Norwich for only managing one shot vs City, well Arsenal did the same.
– Grealish attempted six assists, the most for GW3, second was TAA with five.
– Matip and Van Dijk both have 7 shots already.
– Laporte had 5 shots vs Arsenal, that was the most on the team.
– Salah is first and Mane is tied with Traore for second in shots taken for mids.
– Newcastle is shocking defensively.
– Leeds defends set-pieces like nothing depended on it.
– Leicester should have probably lost all three games so far, Norwich gifted their game to them.
– Champions League starts between GW4 and 5, keep that in mind.
– Antonio and DCL on their own currently have a higher expected goal rate than 7 teams.
– Defensively Spurs is best in the league with 0 goals allowed; however, I think they are catfishing us, they are not what they appear.
– If you activated your wildcard already, don’t forget to play the market and try and make a little bit of cash before the deadline hits.
Transfers in so far. (Top 10)
Transfers out so far. (Top 10)
It’s a Trap!!
Last week I picked out 2 guys who I didn’t like the trend they were headed in. One was Tsimikas being bought and the other was Luke Shaw being sold. Tsimikas came in for a four minute cameo and got himself a point and Shaw got a clean sheet and grabbed himself 6 points. So looks like I was right on both last week. Let us see if I have the same luck this time.
A possibly controversial one, Marcos Alonso being bought feels very iffy to me. Ben Chilwell is going to get minutes, Champions League is on the way and we don’t know who will start what, plus once Alonso gets torched by some winger he might lose the confidence of Tuchel. Short term (GW4) it might work, but fixtures in gameweek 5 and 6 are not great and midweek CL could mean some frustration for new owners, for me, IT’S A TRAP!
I have been in the non-Bruno camp this season as I have not owned him. Still, if I did own him, I absolutely would not be selling him before a game versus Newcastle at home. Toon have been terrible in conceding chances, just one right after the other. Long term I can see why people might try and sell, but surely it be a lot safer to wait a week at the very least. So if you selling Bruno this week, for me, IT”S A TRAP!
D’oh trophy
Once again there are many candidates/teams that could win this. Harvey Barnes sucking the life out of owners, Antonio deniers still about, the double down on Bruno for captain after watching him score one point in GW2, taking hits for Kane or Lukaku, we can go on and on.
But, my D’oh of the week has to be Arsenal. As mentioned before they only had one shot on City. They had less than 20% possession for the game and in the second half they had less than 10%. It got so bad that their own fans cheered a City goal. It came close to being the first time I have ever felt sorry for them.

Hello all.. I got trigger happy and activated my WC now the transfer window has closed and we (relatively) know where we are.. I’d appreciate any feedback on my WC draft below.. I’ve had to shift TAA on but brought in matip for pool defensive cover.. I’ve also brought in Rudiger and Tanganga (Tanganga can become Dier as I have 0.1 in the bank or Rudi can become Reece James) Kane/Ronnie can switch to Lukaku GW7 if required
Thanks in advance
I think it is good to go but hesitating in Torres due to Pep rotation
Also defending I suggest LB or RB for assists not CB
Thanks Khaled with 3 premiums all at 12.5 I can’t afford the full backs required.. my idea is to have cheap exposure to good defences hence the two CB choices
Yesss love it khaledhesham
I did wonder how you’d squeeze Kane over Lukaku and it’s through the TAA downgrade which makes sense.
Yeh.. I’m still thinking I’m going to regret the TAA decision but I’m going to go with my gut and see how I get on
Is Amartey going to hold his place? That’d be my concern as with Torres you are going to need your bench and that’s a fact.
Think Torres sees mins most games anyway it’s more the enough starts but they don’t have any strikers. Even Jesus don’t play there now
No I don’t think he will once Injured players are back.. but there’s no other options @ 4.0m Gilmore and Livramento should suffice I reckon.. Torres is the one playing on my mind as well.. I was waiting to see if city signed a striker before I bought him in as they didn’t I reckon pep will favour him most games (now I’ve said that he’ll prob play Nathan Ake as a striker lol)
Spurs have just signed a RB for 30 million so I’d switch to Dier. Rudiger is fine I like the team on the whole
Thanks smash.. much appreciated.. yeh Tanganga is now a risk so the Dier move is a shout
Personally, I’m not sure if Dier is nailed and if/when Romero comes in to the team, i think it would be really harsh if Sanchez is the one that drops out. He has been better than Dier this season, last season and the season before that. Romero likes to be on the front foot as well i would imagine you would want someone quick to cover when either one presses. Again to me Sanchez seems to be the logical choice for Nuno, not to mention both are south americans and might gel easily. Only one small caveat is I’m not sure if Romero / Sanchez is comfortable enough to play as the left sided centre back. You can also argue that Dier is Spur’s no.1 freekick taker although i dont think he has scored yet in a Spurs shirt. Anyway, Hojbjerg has also been on freekick duties this season. IMHO Reguilon is still the most nailed out of that backline although Nuno could also revert to a back 3. Only time will tell…
COYS i enjoy your Spurs insight from a fans perspective. Good info. cheers
Thanks mate!
Thanks COYS.. appreciated decent info.. you reckon sanchez is the better shout? The prices are all the same so yeh.. that’s given me food for thought.. cheers pal
Prob no need to wc here right? Could get to Ronaldo by selling Bruno and ings and maybe bring in Torres? Is it worth taking a bit or better to wait a week
The longer you wait the more you’ll know about how the bigger assets are settling in.
If you can get to Ronaldo (and want to) without major surgery then I’d say hold your wc.
Team looks pretty good to me. I’m not sure who you would bring if you used a wildcard
I’m currently on Mbeumo as my 4th midfielder in a 3-4-3 over the likes of Gray. Not seeing much of him in drafts, is he likely to continue as an oop partner for Toney?
He’s playing OOP so I think he’s a good shout. He’s been in and out of my WC. It’ll be between him and Smith Rowe at that price
I prefer Gray right now, but at least it shows there are a few options around that price point if one does not look great. Odegaard is another.
i think of the 5.5s gray the better option. plays for a better team, seems to be in form
Quick question, looking like Bruno is going to drop. I assume that as he’s going back to his original price, we don’t lose any value in him?
I.e. we don’t see the 0.1 drop and can only sell at 11.9?
No value lost. He drops back to 12.
Cheers bud
unless he falls twice, we can sell him at 12.0 with no loss
For anyone looking at Salah, Ron, Luka and TAA, this is the best I’ve come up with. Don’t think I’ll do it myself, not until GW7 at the earliest anyway!
That midfield is hard to look at, but I am sure it has a great personality.
Yeah I lost Shaw to Duffy and upgraded Smith Rowe but it’s as good as it’ll get with that front line + salah + taa.
It’d make all our lives easier if one of the 5.5m assets really take off – here’s looking at your Arsenal!
I’m sure your Arsenal looks good but I meant: here’s looking at you, Arsenal!
think its too much of sacrifice elsewhere.. doesnt look balanced..
Isn’t it mad that 4 players can take up almost have your team fund of 100m
Half*
Yeah, I’m 100% not rolling with this team. I’m thinking Jota is a good shout if Firmino is out
I’m starting to look at a WC, as my transfers for next week put me at -8, and I expect to take at least one more absence due to the IB. A cautious backline, for 4-4-2, and Son as my third potential captain (it worked in gw3). Thoughts?
It’s alright mate. I prefer Shaw or Maguire to Varane though
I agree. Both of those will be bigger attacking threats, that assist this past week wasn’t something that you would expect from him very often, he just passed it to Greenwood on the side and Mason really did all the work. Varane is not the threat Maguire is in the box on set pieces or does he play out wide and get into attacking positions like Shaw.
I am a Madrid fan and have watched Varane since he started. He is a classy CB, tidy enough on the ball at the back, he looks like he is not trying that hard but always seems to make it everywhere on time. I always enjoyed watching him, it looked effortless.
He is prone to the occasional mistake on the ball, but he is usually reliable. He wins the defensive headers he has to win, but on the attacking end he has never been very dominating as one would think. He scores a goal or maybe two during the season, maybe an assist, but that’s about it. I am not sure he is aggressive enough defensively to pile up bps to get bonus points.
Also a Madridista – can confirm this description of Varane is spot on.
@Santa, in all my years on the site you are the first I have met.
If you click on my name, it has directed people to youtube for the Madrid himno for years. #HalaMadrid
Thanks, Gear. I’ll rethink Varane-I was probably too impressed by his resume.
i remember varane getting the odd goal for real madrid. dont think he is less of a threat than maguire
He is less of a threat and I said that without looking at the stats over their career, having just looked at them to make sure I wasn’t totally out of place, it was confirmed.
