FPL Tips Gameweek 28
Welcome to FPL Tips Gameweek 28
It’s been another crazy GW, as Bruno Fernandes showed us on a weekend where he was sold by 300,000 managers, by scoring… again. I’m still a bit baffled why so many people decided to sell the best player in the game but hey some high profile FPL managers did just that! Harry Kane getting a massive 19 points, if only he did that last GW when a lot of us FPL managers triple captained him! Salah and Liverpool blanked again and will they even make the Champions League for next season now? Mane… remember what a great asset he used to be, only has one goal in his last 11 Liverpool games. Is it really time to give up on Liverpool and go without any of their players? Surely they will come good again soon as the players have too much ability…
Anyway I thought I would concentrate on the here and now, so players that play in GW29 as they are the players we will be more likely looking to bring in this week. Therefore there is no mention of City assets or Bruno Fernandes who are obviously all great options right through to the end of the season. I did however still mention Chelsea, as of course, I just could not resist. Whether you are free hitting in GW29 or just building your squad right through there should be something for everyone here.
Goalkeepers
Need a goalkeeper? Then Martinez (5.4) is still the obvious pick. He is the fifth highest points scorer in the game behind Kane, Bruno, Son and Salah which is quite remarkable for a GK who started at just 4.5. He plays Newcastle away next, he has a double GW coming up (sometime soon) and he plays in GW29.
Areola (4.5) is the next best bet for me. Fulham are on the back of another clean sheet at Anfield and he now has 5 clean sheets in his last 7 games.
Last up is Sanchez at Brighton (4.5). He faces a Saints side without Ings and probably has the best chance of a clean sheet in GW29 as he faces Newcastle at home. I swear I picked the same goalkeepers the last time out so not much has changed in that respect but then how often are we shopping for a new goalkeeper anyway!
Defenders
Top billing here is Aaron Cresswell (5.8), the top scoring defender in the game. He’s the guy who is probably in your casual work leagues, you think you can cover him with Coufal but you just can’t because the guy just keeps on getting points. Another assist against Leeds which makes it double figures for the season now. Only a handful of defenders have ever achieved this feat. Yes he even has more points than Dias at City. Cresswell has a tough game against United next but after they face teams who have been generally struggling for goals in Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester and Newcastle. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far then how about Craig Dawson (4.5). Now he’s cheap and amazingly enough has only blanked four times since coming into the team 12 game weeks ago. Dawson has the third-best points-per-match average (5.5) among Fantasy assets in his position this season. He has 3 goals this season which is only bettered by Dallas and Zouma who have five and four respectively.
In the last six game weeks only Chelsea have a better xGC (lower) than Brighton. For the same period only City have conceded less shots than Brighton which is just 52 compared to City’s 50. Why I like Brighton defenders is their fixtures when we might need them and they are cheap so we do not need to play them every week. This week they face Saints away, then in the blank GW they have Newcastle at home which might be the standout fixture for a potential clean sheet in GW29. Also looking ahead at GW33 when Spurs and City do not have a fixture we will likely need our bench fodder from Brighton to play Sheffield United. As for their options there is Dunk (4.9), White (4.4), Veltman (4.3) and Burn (4.2), who all look fairly safe for game time. For how nailed they are or which one is best you generally get what you pay for here.
As I mentioned earlier Aston Villa face Newcastle this week. They are without all three of their main attackers C. Wilson, Almiron and ASM, as well as being the fifth lowest scorers in the league. Villa also play in GW29 albeit against Spurs, they have an upcoming double GW soon because the Everton game needs rearranging (TBC), and in GW33 when Spurs, City, Saints and Fulham don’t play they have WBA at home. As to who I like from Aston Villa then that is Konsa (4.6) and he might even be my own transfer in this week. He could have had a couple of goals last time out as he came very close to scoring. Villa have been pretty solid this season and they have 14 clean sheets which is only bettered by Manchester City with 15 and they have only conceded 27 goals which makes them the third best defence behind Chelsea and City.
Another stand out option for GW29 is Stuart Dallas at Leeds (5.0). No defender has more goals than Dallas with five. With Klich really struggling for form Dallas could step back into midfield. Leeds have a tough game against Chelsea but face Fulham in GW29 which is followed by Sheffield United at home in GW30.
Talking about Chelsea… Cesar Azpilicueta (5.7) is the only Chelsea defender to have started every single game under Tuchel. They now have seven clean sheets in their last 9 matches. He looks like a great option going forward with Chelsea having the form defence. He faces Leeds this week but blanks in GW29 which is why I have not talked about him more but after that they play WBA, Palace and Brighton. I also like Rudiger (4.6), who was just rotated against Everton.
Lastly Joachim Andersen (4.5) has been superb this season. Fulham were written off by everyone earlier in the season but now face a real chance of staying up. Jamie Carragher said they were a certainty for relegation, oh how he must be eating his words. They have 5 clean sheets in their last 7 games which is as good as Manchester City. Their fixtures are mixed as they play City this week, play Leeds in GW29, Wolves, Villa, Arsenal and blank in GW33.
Midfielders
Yes, Gareth Bale (9.4) is back. He will certainly be a popular transfer in this week with Salah blanking again. Bale has had a slow start at Spurs but he’s currently on fire and showing us what a great player he still is. He has now scored four goals with two assists in his last four Premier League matches. After a brace and an assist against Burnley a couple of weeks ago, Bale scored another 2 goals against Palace in a 4-1 win last time out. He’s also been scoring in the Europa League. To further enhance his credentials he is playing for a contract at Spurs as Zidane has already stated he is not welcome back in Madrid. Just be wary though as his minutes are still being managed by Mourinho and is generally only playing 60-70 mins but the Welsh wizard is certainly “back”! Spurs face Arsenal, they play in GW29 against Villa and face Newcastle in GW30. With Bale being the differential Son is still the more popular pick with 55% current ownership. With good reason as the South Korean has the third most points in the game behind Bruno and Kane. Last four game weeks only KDB and Raphinha have created more than Son’s 14 chances and no player in the game has created more than Son’s 6 big chances. Bale has a higher xG than Son but the South Korean has a higher xA. Both look like great options going forward but I still prefer Son personally because he will stay on the pitch for longer.
Talking of players being back and for anyone looking for a differential it appears like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (11.4) is an option again. He’s playing out of position as a striker, he scored a hat-trick against Leeds in GW24, has had a recent rest and returned to the starting line up to score against Burnley last time out. Last four game weeks Aubameyang has the fifth highest xG in the game and he has not started all of them. Arsenal do have a nice run of fixtures to the end of the season now and Auba might be the differential or Salah replacement we might need. If you don’t want to spend 11.4 on an Arsenal midfielder (yeah it is a lot) how about his much cheaper team mate Bukayo Saka (5.4). Arsenal play every GW to the end of the season and having watched him and Arsenal recently he really should have more points returns. This won’t come up on any stats tables but he’s miss-controlled the ball at vital moments which could have resulted in easy chances to score. He’s also cheap enough to bench.
One of my favourite players to watch right now is Raphinha (5.5) at Leeds. He’s so skilful, works hard and if he was playing with a different striker this season really would have a lot more fantasy points. No player in the game has created more chances (21) than the Brazilian in the last six matches and no player has created more than 6 big chances by Raphinha. With 21 goal attempts, only Harry Kane has more, so he really is a threat every time he plays. At just 5.5 he’s also cheap enough to bench. Leeds play Chelsea at home next, travel to Fulham for GW29 and Sheffield United at home in the next three.
Fulham’s best attacking threat is Adama Lookman (5.0). He’s third for chances created in the last six game weeks with 19 and only Kane, Bamford, Raphinha and Lingard have had more shots in the same period. Similar to Saka he is cheap enough to bench, while still playing in GW29.
Lastly he’s not an option this week but I thought he was still worth a mention. No player has registered more attacking returns than Jesse Lingard (6.0) (six – four goals, two assists) in their last six matches. However Lingard is ineligible to face Man Utd in GW28 but is certainly a great option for the rest of the season.
Forwards
Harry Kane (11.3) is the stand out pick for a striker this season. He has 182 points so far on the back of another two goals and two assists against Palace. The next best is Bamford who has 38 less points with a lot more minutes to his name. Stats wise he is still performing as no player has had more goal attempts than Kane’s 26 in the last six game weeks. He plays in GW29 against Villa and will likely have another double GW before the season is finished as the Spurs v Saints game still needs to be rearranged.
For those free hitting in GW29 and looking for a striker this week Kelechi Iheanacho (5.6) might be your man as he faces Sheffield United at home this week. He does not play in GW29 but he has managed to score in his last two games. With Barnes and Maddison being currently injured we could see the Nigerian feature up front for a Champions League chasing team for the majority of the season now and Leicester have a great run of fixtures from now, with the exception of GW30, right through to GW36.
Trying to tip another striker here is difficult so I will just throw a few names out there. Firstly Ollie Watkins (6.6). Now he’s not scored for six game weeks and has struggled for chances since Jack Grealish has been missing through injury. However he plays Newcastle this week, plays Spurs in GW29 and will likely have a double GW very soon. Secondly Michael Antonio (6.6) who surprisingly blanked against Leeds as West Ham struggled to create chances but he does have the fifth highest xG for all positions in the last six game weeks. We know he is pretty much fixture proof and West Ham are really flying right now in fifth place. Lastly is Patrick Bamford (6.8) who has been struggling for goals in recent weeks, missed two great chances against West Ham but with 21 goal attempts in the last six game weeks only Harry Kane has more. If he could find his shooting boots the goals might just be around the corner.
Good luck for the rest of this GW and I wish you all well for the upcoming GW. Green arrows here we come!
