Grab, Avoid or Bore Off! – Fantasy Premier League 2016-17

FPL is finally open and ready for business and so are we with a new edition of Bore Off. This will only be one of the many articles we will try and bring you over the coming weeks, all leading to GW1 and the beginning of another season. For any new members we welcome you to the site and we hope you enjoy this article. For the veterans, you know the drill. Cookie (United fan) hates Liverpool, Init (Everton fan) hates Liverpool and Kop (Liverpool fan) hates Liverpool. Think that is a fair assessment of all three. Well ok, having seen the prices and some of the options I have called back The Three Amigos from their summer vacation to get some early observations from them for questions that many of us are wondering about.
Who should we turn to at City? Is Cesc worth considering? And Giroud…of course, don’t matter what the question is about, it’s Giroud. So without further ado, let us get to our question and answer segment quickly so we can let Cookie go back to watching Love Island and complaining about Theo being out.

Thoughts on Alonso I had him in my first draft but I just cant keep him in I’ve tried but without weakening my MF I just cant do it are others having him ??????

I think one of Chelsea’s wing backs would be very nice. I’m still waiting to see if Azpi will be pushed out there (on the right), and if so I think he’s better value.

@Silvers, I think there are good options for a lot cheaper, but that doesn’t mean that he should be ignored. To some degree it comes down to how repeatable you think what he did is. He probably would have scored over 200 points last season if he would have started from the off. If you think that is where he will end up, then we will all have him at some point, since that would put him in top 5 mid status and he only be worth 7 million. If however he scores well. but not crazy, then you can start making a case for 5.5 guys and saving 1.5 million to invest elsewhere. There is also the idea that you could play him as the 4th defender and pretend he is your 4th midfielder. There will probably be a player or two who is his price or lower that will outscore him, but until that person shows themselves going with Alonso as a placeholder is not the worst idea.

All that is based on the idea that you are really dreading losing him and would prefer to keep him, so just throwing some options out there.

      • Silvers says:

Thanks Mito that interests me playing four at back 3 in MF , when you consider 7m options in MF , he could do a lot better I could , swap say Tadic to Romeu save 2m & in all honesty weren’t far of same points this might be an option 😉

If Chelsea sign Kun are we suddenly in a position where Kun, Jesus & Lukaku are mandatory?

Most of it looks good. Firmino’s new position rules him out for me now.

        • Snookie Bear says:

          Go with Defoe?

        • Snookie Bear says:

Also I think he will still be good and maybe even score more with Salah and Mane on wings and Coutinho behind him. Though he needs to be more selfish and score more

        • Smash10 says:

Can’t argue against Defoe is always scores goals

        • Smash10 says:

You could be right. However he will have to score a lot more goals now he’s a forward instead of a midfielder.

        • Snookie Bear says:

He’s too unselfish for a striker but with that pace in attack I would want one of them though can’t afford Mane or Salah About Defoe he will be in better team now and more attacking team so let’s see

        • straygoat says:

I agree. Firmino isn’t ruthless enough for a leading striker imo. He’ll get goals, but more than Defoe or even Benteke? I’m not sure.

        • Mitro says:

          Snookie!

I concur with smash! Firmino life in fantasy footie has come to an end……

Unless he starts banging in a brace most weeks.. 😉

A city striker would look awesome in your team

      • @Snookie, think that is a real solid side.

A thought I had in a chat yesterday on Firmino.

Firmino’s stats don’t tell the full story, people are stuck on his decrease in fpl points next season, but also forget that he played about 40% of the games out left or right. Sounds to me like LFC has now stopped doing experiments and will play him at 9 continuously. He can score and guessing that not being moved around as much could mean more consistency. He had a season in Germany where he scored 16, he can score. Plus I think LFC creates even more chances this season. Plus he is cheaper. Coutinho was my go to guy last season and he still could be, but I have to see how deep and how involved he is.

        • DMC says:

I do agree with this Mito, in the sense that he being now a forward does not necessarily diminish he’s points potential. During the vast majority of last season we all acknowledged that he was very good when playing up front and not that good when on the wing so what we need to know here is what are Klopp’s intentions.
Being an OOP mid helped, of course, but he’s 8.5 playing in an attacking side ran by Klopp.
If there are no signs of a proper striker being purchased and if we are sure he’s their main man up top he could prove a shrewd investment at 8.5. He’s in my auto-complete-ish draft and I would like him to stay there. It solves the ‘having some liverpool attack’ conundrum in the form of their less expensive one and it works on a general budget perspective.

        • DMC says:

Well, I also agree with that Cookie! Was writing while you posted that!

        • DMC says:

Speaking of slightly under-the-radar players I would like your views on Mkhitaryan. Does he look nailed from what you’ve seen so far and will the “mourinho-second-season” along with the “lukaku isn’t the star of the team and thus more responsibility for Miki” factors help his cause? Priced at 8£ this could be another shrewd investment.

        • Yeah, because if he was a 8.5 mid he be on every team and I get that, but like you say, people are committing the mistake of comparing him to him as a midfielder and not just evaluating him vs other forwards. Think he is better than any option at his price or lower, plus he probably outscores several of the six tagged at a higher price. He finished fourth in points last season, if he or is healthy, fourth is about where he might land. Think he scores about the same…180 or possibly more.

        • Smash10 says:

Thing in he’s still not guaranteed to play up front well every week anyway. They still have Sturridge and Origi about. He will get less points when he scores and assists as a striker. He will also be less likely to get bonus points now because of this. Not completely dismissing him because he’s playing in an attacking Liverpool team but their points are always spread between all their attacking players as it is

        • Smash10 says:

Yeah I had Miki originally. With the likely signing of Perisic in his position there is going to be even more competition and rotation there

        • DMC says:

Valid points there Smash. I would contra-contra-contra argument that when he played on the wings it was more a case of no other options for that than the need to sub him up top. Bottom line is I think Klopp prefers him up top ahead of Studge and or Origi any day and with Salah around one would imagine that bar injuries he won’t be needed on the wing.
As per the points situation, as Mito said, that’s an argument where you are comparing him to him as a mid and not vs other strikers. What we need to do regarding Firmino is reset what we make of him as a mid and simply look at the forwards list and try to figure out if 8.5 is good value for him. I think it is, unless we see him being played on the wing.
I didn’t get the assists comment though, as they count the same regardless of the player’s position on the field.

        • DMC says:

Perisic is a winger, Miki is not. But Perisic potential signing does make me wonder which will be Utd’s first XI, so I’ll add that to my query Cookie! smile

        • @Smash, he will lose points for goals scored and a clean sheet, but his possibility of bonus points goes up. That was one part of him playing oop that was not helping him. He now gets more bps for a goal and nothing in terms of bps is lowered by him being a striker. If anything he is more likely to get more bonus points. Now that won’t make up for the 22 points lost, but it starts to chip at it, all of sudden if he scores 15 instead of 11 which is possible if he is kept up top then you are still looking at 180 plus

        • Smash10 says:

True Perisic is an out and out winger but is still competition for Miki. My worry is that he won’t play every week Mourinho always seems to rotate them all

        • Smash10 says:

Totally agree with Cookie that he has the potential to be better value than Lukaku and he a bargain. Just worried he will be in and out all the time. I have had him in drafts

        • Smash10 says:

Not sure if Firmino will get enough goals for a forward though to rake the points in. Don’t forwards only get bonus points really when they score. I got the assists points thing wrong though

        • They get bps for everything that a mid would, but most don’t drop deep enough to help their bps tally by making recoveries and other stuff, so that’s why they are mostly goal dependent. He does do a lot of the other work, just look at his bps tally and bonus points in general. If he was classified as a forward he would have finished third among all forwards for bps, leap frogging Kun and Costa. He helps himself a great deal by providing key passes.

Smash, stop making me defend Firmino, I don’t appreciate it mate. 😉

There was me thinking you just loved his tattoos Mito
