The HCT (Hull City Tigers anyone?) No . . . oh well, ‘Hull’ then, begun their first ever European campaign last night in Slovakia where they secured a 0-0 draw with Trencin. The second leg of this is Thursday 7th followed by a friendly in Stuttgart on the Sunday (10th). Thereafter if they qualify next week, they face the final play-off round for the Europa League on Thursday 21st and 28th August – just as the Premier League campaign is beginning to take off. Beware rotation in the Hull ranks.
[divider_1px]
So there you have it – up to date on all pre-season (and relevant European) matters so what have we learned?
HOT:
Stevan Jovetic
The Manchester City striker has had a great pre-season so far scoring four goals in his last two matches against Milan and Liverpool. Those Edin Dzeko supporters who were rubbing their hands excitedly after Alvaro Negredo’s injury will now be wringing their hands nervously at the form of the Montenegrin. The likliehood is that rotation will occur to partner Sergio Aguero in attack for Manuel Pellegrini’s charges. It really is so difficult to second guess the Chilean. Interestingly though Dzeko and Jovetic were paired together in the Liverpool match but I don’t see Aguero NOT playing or City going for three strikers.
So, who will start in attack when the Sky Blues open up at Newcastle on the opening weekend? Ask me a question on geography!
Southampton
Amidst the frenzy of activity at Southampton this summer due to the mass exodus of playing staff, it sort of has gone unnoticed that they have now played five pre-season matches and until 15 minutes from the end of last night’s win at Brighton, they had not concede one single goal, winning all those matches.
It bodes well for the Saints defence going into the season and it may be the same for our fantasy teams. You can pick up Jose Fonte, Ryan Bertrand or Nathaniel Clyne as probable first choices for Ronald Koeman. More interestingly, providing they don’t sign further defensive reinforcements, there may be decent value in Maya Yoshida (4.5) or Jos Hoiveld (4.0).
My following of all of Southampton’s matches via club reporters and twitter have shown me that Nathaniel Clyne is being involved regularly in the offensive half of the field and with Chambers now off to the Emirates, he will be my investment in the Saints backline.
Additionally, for those investing in some of Southampton’s new attacking talent, both Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic have scored for their new clubs already and also laid on a few goals between them.
NOT
Vito Mannone
This may well all be part of Gus Poyet’s grand plan but Vito Mannone has played just 45 minutes of Sunderland’s first match (against Darlington) and then 60 minutes versus Carlisle United. Those were the club’s first two pre-season matches and in the preceding three, he has not seen a minute of action with Costel Pantillimon and the youth goalkeepers preferred. It has been revealed at the time of writing this article, that he is also not involved in tonight’s friendly against Vitoria Setubal, reportedly through illness. Therefore we only have two Sunderland pre-season matches to come so we’ll see if this changes but his current absence raises some issues for some fantasy managers.
The good news for prospective fantasy owners is that you can have his likely replacement, the huge Romanian Pantillimon, for exactly the same outlay of cash so this shouldn’t disrupt the rest of your fantasy team plans in any way.
I think this is the best team Iv come up with so far…,
Not enough United coverage if you ask me. 😉
Unsure about Barkley and Sterling.
On that note, changed my team on 7 places since this afternoon.
+1
Also beware Davies gametime, with Rose competing for his spot, and this Dier fellow just signed
I think no Rooney could be suicide.
Slow poison could be suicide. 😉
My God… this is a conspiracy 😉
sorry just going to leave this here, in case anyone missed it

bench – the sheer quantity of the post sounds good but….. bank hol weekend, few cans … (few = one sec and ill be back to you) and – is it play good and win and Bench will sort the rest?
do you mean 9 qualifiers for round 1 for Q leagues ? if so yes i will sort it !
question for those in Q Leagues , would you prefer a total random draw in Round 1 or 4 separate pots where you cant play someone from your league ?
Ransoms probably easier Bench. They don’t split the FA Cup up 😉
Random not ransom! Don’t be taking any hostages…. And I’ve definitely not had 12 pints
few = 12 and counting.
Ha is it bank holiday in Ireland ? 12 is standard for me a night lol, and need to be at least 5% vol , enjoy
early yet and we not benchish (thats it is it?).
sad thing is – Im at home
ha ha yes it is ( benchish ) was talking lots of that friday ,just ask cookie & innit was proper mullered , stupidly took a sleeping tablet and carried on drinking * kids don’t try this at home *

Innit cant remember e-mail you, was mashed luckly i didn’t take to facebook

Bench you e-mailed me, Cookie and Potty the same thing and I replied and you replied back and yes I saw Cookies response as it was on the same one! Oh dear….!
Oops Potty too ! ok which one of you 3 spiked my drink ? still not read it , only the the subject bar
Hi all. Thinking of playing around with my team a bit (see image). What do you think of replacing Sanchez & Arnautovic with Ramsey & Eriksen? Unsure over Spurs with the new boss, and I think too that getting rid of Sanchez if he doesn’t explode is way easier than getting him in if he does. Is this is a tinker too far?
Hi Pippin like this team only question mark would be Zamora but if you change him you need to change a couple of others
thanks Silverback- Zamora is a complete donkey, and I heartily wish I could do without him. However, with a 3-5-2 he’s the only way forward without making space for Mr Vaz Te…
Alternatively, I downgrade Siggy to some midfield non-entity worth 4.5m and get a 6m striker in. I like Siggy though, and the best 6m forwards are at Hull- who I’m waiting to be knocked out of Europe / at least settle on a weekly lineup before I go near them
Pippin, we have very similar teams. And we’ve gone through similar thought processes with Zamora and Siggy vs Jelavic etc
Glad to see someone’s on my wavelength! So yeah, nice team 😉
haha, thanks James- we should play doubles! There’d be no rows over selection it seems…
We’d make light work of it haha! Only arguments I can see would be Fabregas… *trembles slightly* but it was Wenger’s choice to decline I guess 😉
Pippin – I like the changes you are proposing. Any chance of a 4:4:2 with a third striker that plays?
Why 4-4-2? My defence is most likely to be Luis plus two rotating pairs.
Arnautovic > Sidwell or Siggy > S. Davis could fund Zamora > Bojan but those don’t seem good moves to me…
ok – leav me rephrase. I don’t like Zamora. At all.
haha, that’s pretty frank. Is there anyone you’d downgrade though? I don’t intend to play him and I’m confident that as my team value increases through the opening weeks (and I likely WC by 3-4 or so) I will get a squad without any worthless players. At this point I’m not sure what else I can do
Dreamers – what does it matter? He’s bench fodder.
James – if you could find a player you like for a little more, then it gives another option
It does, and I considered rotating Siggy with Bojan or having Jelavic, but I decided the cash was better spent at the back.
i dont like Arna ( its enough money) or Luis (until he is secure) so you could do something there if you wished
James – Bojan scored again. Think he playing high wing.
He only scored 4 in Dutch league last year though
Those are both interesting options Dreamers. Luis is uncertain, yes, and I’ve gone back and forward between him and Debuchy (nailed on, 0.5m less). However, Chelsea’s fixtures in the opening two weeks offer CS potential, and he also likes to get forward. I could still bottle it though, and get Debuchy in.
Arnautovic is something of a differential, and am attempt to capitalise on the great fixtures of the new and exciting Stoke we started to see last year. Puncheon would be an alternative in similar price range, and that would mean I could afford a 6.0m striker (or Tadic, Markovic, etc in for Siggy). I don’t think these are particularly amazing upgrades though: it feels a six of one, half a dozen of the other. Do you have another option in mind? Thanks for your thoughts so far
Pippin – Im on for a 3 up front so its a different approach so i can give an opinion if its 3 or 2 up front. Its only an opinion and doesnt mean its right. So …. 2 or 3 and ill give an option for you to consider.
All right lads, long since I did a RMT:
Will make a decision on Chelsea defender closer to the deadline, but Azpi is the FB who has played the most so far, no?
Also hearing that Simpson could lose his place to Isla. Might bring in another QPR defender instead.
Tekno, though I’ve slated them slightly above I might be tempted by a Hull midfielder (e.g. Snodgrass) in place of Punch or Siggy, at least for GW1 while they have tough fixtures. Henderson might be another worthy option. It’s not good having a transfer pre-lined-up though, so maybe that’s a dumb idea. I like both those players better than the Hulls guys overall for sure.
Still not getting the Shaw love- for me he’s expensive solely because of hype (which is weird in this game). He doesn’t have the stats to merit consideration as an attacking threat, and I think Jones is a better bet for CS points and bonus surely?
Well, I myself would rather have Rafael than Shaw as Rafael is far more proven offensively, but he’s more of a rotation threat. Until Young’s recent performances, most of us expected Shaw to be nailed on, but I might have to reconsider. Would free up some funds as well.
As for Hull, I expect them to struggle due to the Europa League, so I’m staying clear of them.
Tekno – Rafael? no no no
2 years ago yes – but not now
Remember Rafael’s goal vs QPR two seasons ago?
Phwoaaaaar
Yeah, I was a big fan of Rafael back then. Think he was the most improved player. Last season he was a nightmare though.
Innit and co. are telling us Shaw is being prepared by van Gaal. Which could’ve been the case were it not for an excellent Ashley Young. Against the easier opponents Young must be the first choice. Shaw wearing a semi-beard at his age even makes less sense. He must be depressed.
Raz -Shaw or Young for you? Wont pick either myself but reckon Shaw is no-brainer.
Again, Ashley Young really impressed. Shaw was…
LvG questioned his fitness level I think…
LvG is not and will never be afraid to bench an expensive player or even RvP/Rooney when he thinks he has every right to… so for him benching Shaw is a no brainer.
Anyway Tekno, because I really wanted someone from United in my defense I took DDG. No brainer for the first 7 weeks if he doesn’t injured himself.
so get off the fence.
I understand all the analysis.
GW1 – who will play in your opinion?
Mine – Shaw
btw – i dont have Shaw
Mehehe, don’t know who will play. So I am going with a certainty: DDG!
I would actually take a punt on Shaw if he was certain he’d play. Sighs. Same for Rafael. These players can really get assists/goals. Anyway, if he does start you’d have a big chance he’d be subbed after 70 minutes for a Young. Meaning more chance to get a CS. Less chance on getting BPS though.
Hi Tekno good team I wouldn’t have two strong GK & Shaw could rotate with young bit of a worry good MF lot of balance could be risky playing with just 2 FWD good team overall
First team I’ve seen with Azpi in it for Chelsea coverage, you fancying the same Chelsea back 4 who finished last season to start this one with Luis on the bench Tekno?
I’m probably leaning towards that way of thinking myself but I’m playing a little safer (I hope) and taking Terry.
In Chelsea’s friendly today, Azpi started at RB with Luis at LB. When Ivanovic came on, Luis was subbed out with Azpi going LB. I think the same happened in the last match. Chelsea have two more friendlies I think, so I’ll make a judgement after seeing the lineups in those two matches.
I’m still a little worried about how they’ll line up but it’s good that Azpi and Luis are the same price- makes a swap easy (I can’t afford the others)
You could switch De Gea to Cech and Luis to either Jones or Evans Pip
Andy-Cech didnt start again tonight?
Not a great start for Courtois losing 3-0 in his first preseason game though dreamers. I’d fancy Cech not to lose the starting spot just yet at Chelsea
Cech played the 2nd half didn’t he?
That’s a sideways move for me I think- the Chelsea GK uncertainty is similar to their defence uncertainty… Maybe just ManU and Arsenal to be safe…Will think some more and watch the remaining friendlies…
I’ll be watching like a hawk too. It’s Azpi or Luis for me.
Nice team tekno and spookily very similiar to my latest draft.I too have switched to 3-5-2.For now…………
is it me or does anyone else , want to give kylie their Commonwealth ? lol
Hahaha, unfortunately I stopped watching an hour ago Bench, it’s been awful!
Just thought if post this again for those that missed it.
I thought I’d write a little bit on 5 players I think are a must have. Enjoy!.
Raheem Sterling (Liverpool).
For me Sterling is the best route into Liverpools attacking options this season. Sturridge is very expensive this time around and not worth his price tag, especially with so many other cheaper options. Sterling on the other hand could find him self playing next to Sturridge or just behind, and with a price tag of 8.5m hes great value in your midfield.
Aaron Ramsey/ Mesut Ozil ( Arsenal)
This is a toss up for me. Alexis Sanchez is a very expensive option for a midfielder in my eyes, especially considering he’s new to the premier league. Ozil and Ramsey on the other hand are both great value at 9.0m and both I think will benefit from Sanchez anyway. Ramsey is my pick at the moment, well at-least till Ozil is back anyway.
Leighton Baines (Everton)
Now I know everyone hates putting big money in there defence, but I think Baines should be an exception. Baines has always been a big pointer, especially considering he takes penaltys and most free kicks. He gets forward and alway bags him self a couple of assist along the way. I always try to think of him as my 6th midfielder, and at 7.0m he’s actually great value.
Juan Mata (Man utd)
I have a big feeling this season will be Mata back at his best. With Man Utd playing there new formation, and Mata playing behind the strikers I can only see the assist king doing what he does best. I think at 9.0m he’s a must have, and a cheaper route into United’s attack. Ime expecting big things this season.
Diego Costa (Chelsea)
Chelsea have been screaming for a new striker and now they have it. Diego Costa had a fantastic season last year and fits into the way Chelsea play just right. Now with Hazard and Fabregas behind him ime expecting a lot of goals. Maybe even Costa getting top goal scorer would surprise me.
Thanks Ant, great post and nice grav finally 😉
Agonising over Baines given his price and poor fixtures but you are spot on about him basically replacing a mid as he scores at their rate plus clean sheets as and when. Hmmmm…….
Init i too thought about Baines and playing 4-4-2 formation to start with untill i had another look at Evertons early fixtures !!!
Ime gonna throw him straight in. Evertons fixtures may be tricky but there not an easy team to beat. At home they will give any team a hard run, plus Lukaku will prove a point against Chelsea so I could see Everton probably beating Chelsea.
Ant, those are some interesting comments. With you on the Mata and Costa choices. Baines is always an intriguing FPL player for many people. Many people (myself included) see his price tag as a big turnoff. He still gets the points every year though! Sterling is a good pick, but I’ll probably wait to see how LIverpool do in their first few games and when their fixtures get a little easier. Ramsey would be good, however it doesn’t seem likely that he will be as proficient as he was last year. And I think Sanchez will benefit from their play since he’s more likely to run behind the defense and get on the end of those through balls. Similar to Walcott. Ozil/Ramsey get the assists, Sanchez/Walcott will get the goals. Good analysis though!
