One team have already played competitively this season and that is Hull City.
AS Trencin 0-0 Hull City

The HCT (Hull City Tigers anyone?) No . . . oh well, ‘Hull’ then, begun their first ever European campaign last night in Slovakia where they secured a 0-0 draw with Trencin. The second leg of this is Thursday 7th followed by a friendly in Stuttgart on the Sunday (10th). Thereafter if they qualify next week, they face the final play-off round for the Europa League on Thursday 21st and 28th August – just as the Premier League campaign is beginning to take off. Beware rotation in the Hull ranks.
[divider_1px]
So there you have it – up to date on all pre-season (and relevant European) matters so what have we learned?
HOT:
Stevan Jovetic
The Manchester City striker has had a great pre-season so far scoring four goals in his last two matches against Milan and Liverpool. Those Edin Dzeko supporters who were rubbing their hands excitedly after Alvaro Negredo’s injury will now be wringing their hands nervously at the form of the Montenegrin. The likliehood is that rotation will occur to partner Sergio Aguero in attack for Manuel Pellegrini’s charges. It really is so difficult to second guess the Chilean. Interestingly though Dzeko and Jovetic were paired together in the Liverpool match but I don’t see Aguero NOT playing or City going for three strikers.
So, who will start in attack when the Sky Blues open up at Newcastle on the opening weekend? Ask me a question on geography!
Southampton
Amidst the frenzy of activity at Southampton this summer due to the mass exodus of playing staff, it sort of has gone unnoticed that they have now played five pre-season matches and until 15 minutes from the end of last night’s win at Brighton, they had not concede one single goal, winning all those matches.
It bodes well for the Saints defence going into the season and it may be the same for our fantasy teams. You can pick up Jose Fonte, Ryan Bertrand or Nathaniel Clyne as probable first choices for Ronald Koeman. More interestingly, providing they don’t sign further defensive reinforcements, there may be decent value in Maya Yoshida (4.5) or Jos Hoiveld (4.0).
My following of all of Southampton’s matches via club reporters and twitter have shown me that Nathaniel Clyne is being involved regularly in the offensive half of the field and with Chambers now off to the Emirates, he will be my investment in the Saints backline.
Additionally, for those investing in some of Southampton’s new attacking talent, both Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic have scored for their new clubs already and also laid on a few goals between them.
NOT
Vito Mannone
This may well all be part of Gus Poyet’s grand plan but Vito Mannone has played just 45 minutes of Sunderland’s first match (against Darlington) and then 60 minutes versus Carlisle United. Those were the club’s first two pre-season matches and in the preceding three, he has not seen a minute of action with Costel Pantillimon and the youth goalkeepers preferred. It has been revealed at the time of writing this article, that he is also not involved in tonight’s friendly against Vitoria Setubal, reportedly through illness. Therefore we only have two Sunderland pre-season matches to come so we’ll see if this changes but his current absence raises some issues for some fantasy managers.
The good news for prospective fantasy owners is that you can have his likely replacement, the huge Romanian Pantillimon, for exactly the same outlay of cash so this shouldn’t disrupt the rest of your fantasy team plans in any way.
Thanks GP, great stuff as ever, you’ve really made following pre-season an easy job for us all!
thanks for the efforts GP. really helpful
for now, my plan remains the same – definite starters over maybe’s so jovetic and dzeko both not an option for me.
my faith in sterling and sigurdsson has been reinstated by this article
although it does tempt me towards southampton’s defence…
Greetings everyone :bouncy-balls:
How is everyone ?
HL
:satansmoking:
HL! How you doing? Glad to see you stroll back in here. #abouttime
Hey Mito…
Feels good to be back on the boards !
Had to “do a NIN” for a while…disappear, clear my head and all that…
Now I ll probably need a few days to go through all the articles I’ve missed…
And yeah, pick a squad…and prepare for the new season…
Welcome back!!!!
Welcome back HL! Hope you are well mate.
Thanks, Init…
Good to be back 😉
It might take a few hrs for me to read all of the articles re: the new season…
As Kop said, it’s getting harder and harder to pick a strong squad which could fit into the 100 budget… :noshake:
I don’t know whether to take the gamble with Jovetic.
Life’s a risk and then you die. Cause you never know when you’re gonna go.
AZ?
I have the CD. 😉
Nas has AZ as nickname? Don’t think so. It’s a classic. 1994 album.
I do remember a rapper named AZ but he’s nowhere near the level of NAS.
And now for something completely different, caught your post in the NFL league and saw that were using a PPR rule in our scoring system, now if I go into the players tab and look at last years points tally’s will that be showing me what WR’s, RB’s and TE’s actually scored using the PPR rule or is that how they scored without it?
Might make a difference to how I set up my auto draft config settings.
Also while were talking Eggball, theirs still 4 spots left in Init’s Western division if anyone fancies it
My Western what?!
RAZ, Completely agree. I have one AZ cd, mostly for one song “Sugar Hill” and a bunch of NAS. Including my ringtone “Hip Hop is dead” but it has been a long time since I have broke them out. I might do it today. I was confusing AZ’s cover title ‘ Doe or Die ‘ with what you said. But I remember the Life’s a bitch song by Nas.

Western division, didn’t you join the league already?
I’ve had the e-mail to join etc from Mito along with another more threatening one too but I’ve not had a chance to do anything with it yet.
Get with it son, I say…I say get with it. Have you not seen Bryan already designing Logos for his team and has already done 33 mock drafts preparing. 😉
I’ve seen the logos on twitter they’re brilliant! I’ll have a look at getting my team into that league tonight.
Very nice GP! What with all this Dzeko/Jovetic nonsense, I will be looking to ignore my own advice in the Round Table article and just go for Giroud instead for the same money.
Told myself I wasn’t going to post my team. Things change. All teams are starting to look alike and mine is no different (plus I still make changes daily :P). So here you go kids, my first RMT (you however don’t have to rate it, since it looks just like yours :P)
Looking at it I don’t like it at all. Lol, loved my team a week ago. WTF has happened?
We share 8 players. Not too similar then 😉 like your overall balance including the ability to bench Janmaat in the first week. Courtois is risky. Oscar over Hazard.
Not touching Oscar. 😛
Hmmm anyway, think Courtois is not a risk. Mourinho said something yesterday. Courtois is the worlds best goalie but it’s good he has competition in Cech… I think Courtois needs to screw up a few times and maybe do Mou’s daughter before he benches him. I actually expect Cech to leave.
I was joking haha, yep I expect Courty is #1 but, until Cech leaves there’s always a risk. I remember when Wenger benched Sczcesny for Fabianski which denied Wojech the Golden Glove outright.
Yeah, if that happens DDG will get the spot. Want Chelsea coverage in the back though. Since they have so much quality there (like in midfield) it’s hard to predict who will start. Azpi, Luis, Cahill, Terry, Iva… Cahill is the only certainty?
Unsure if I want to keep Hazard. Like in the back Chelsea have a lot of quality in midfield, plus he’s not as fit as the rest of the squad. And knowing Mou, he must just go with 1 attacking midfield player. Costa should start all the games though.
Hedging my bets on Luis starting as they’ve just forked out big for him. But as you say, with Mou nothing’s a certainty, even Cahill could rotate with Terry…
I do strongly rate Hazard. He’ll probably be the top point scoring midfielder come May. All the time up til lunchtime today I’ve had him. With is World Cup exploits though you wonder if he’ll take his time to get going again…
If you took him out, who would you replace him with?
Naaah, Hazard is fine. With Luiz out he will take even more free kicks.
You’re probably right about Luis. Anyway, already made 5 changes to my team. Looks nothing like I what I posted earlier. 😛
Yoshida or Hooiveld have the cb jersey at the moment?
Can’t be sure about anything. Last game Hooiveld did not make an appaerance, the ones before he all started I think.
