Stats, Stats and Some More Stats
As some of you know, I moved to the US last year from the UK. As an FPL enthusiast of many a year, one of the first things I noticed was just how huge the fantasy sports industry is over here. There are several fantasy sports programs on TV and there are regular sports programs (on the main sports channels) with sections dedicated solely to the fantasy side of the game. Imagine Gary Lineker taking 15 minutes out of Match of the day to talk about the players you should bring into your fantasy teams for the following week.
Another thing that grabbed my attention was just how into statistics Americans are when it comes to their sports, and fantasy sports in particular. American Football, Baseball, Basketball, it doesn’t matter.
Two of my favourite things in life are ‘Sports’ and ‘Spreadsheets filled with sports data’. I was in heaven, and I needed to be part of things. I signed up into a friend’s American fantasy football league, despite the fact I had no idea what I was doing. I relied on researching the data from the previous season to guide my team selection. One of the first articles I came across was a piece titled “100 Fantasy Facts”, written by one of the most recognized of fantasy experts over here, ESPN’s Matthew Berry. It did exactly what it said on the tin. It was a long list of factual snippets, to help readers decide who to recruit for their fantasy teams. I loved the format and always thought it would make an interesting option for a FPL article.
And so here we are. My tribute to a much more established and knowledgeable fantasy writer than I will ever be. And my attempt to bring you, the FF247 community, some of those trends and quirks within FPL stats that might have passed you by. I wondered if I could get to 247 facts, but that was too ambitious. 100 facts seemed to boring. So the only logical conclusion was to stop at 133. Well, why not?
My disclaimer: Facts can be found to support almost any argument. I haven’t gone into this to talk up (or talk down) any particular player. Instead, I’ve cut the data from last season (and in some cases the last few seasons) many different ways and made observations along the way. Ignore what you want. Use what you want. Just remember, you can’t argue with the facts. You just can’t. That’s why they’re called ‘Facts’.
I hope you enjoy it.

I’ve just had a statgasm !!!! Brilliant article, made me adjust a few things
Rip, how are you mate – good summer?
Hiya Cook, yeah its been nice and busy, been getting involved in wildlife conservation working for the wildlife trusts in my region and its going really well, I start a degree in September and get to keep my job in the meantime so busy times ahead. How about yourself mate ?????
Sounds great Rip, I do enjoy your twitter pics of plants and spiders. Good on ya mate.
All good this end my friend – the heatwave continues and it’s way too hot mate. It’s been a chilled summer, enjoying the cricket and having some great family time.
Did you go and see Big Dunc yesterday?
I did bud yeah, was great to see Rooney, Ferguson & Barkley all up top together, just a shame it only lasted 5 minutes and we were beaten 2-1 :goombah: I’m glad the majority of our fans gave Roo a good reception, hes still not forgiven by many hardcore Blues for kissing the Utd badge that day, but I think I wud have done the same if 40,000 ppl were calling me a TW@T
Glad your havin a good summer mate. How’s your squad shaping up ???
Oh and Cook are there any leagues set up again this year I can join with all the FFC guys all in the same place, I enjoyed keeping tabs on everyone last season. If so mate send me the code on twitter
Rip, I’ve sent you the FF247 League and also the Manager of the Month – they are available under the Comps tab above here also, but don’t worry I’dd do all the work for ya 😉
Also, Elle has been banging on about his “Regulars” league – no doubt he’ll be on at some point soon but you need to email him for the code. Give him a shout when he appears. He’ll be running a FF247 Cup also.
My squad isn’t shaping up at all. I’m trying this morning without Hazard and seeing where it gets me!
How is yours? Gis a look !!
After the very impressive Trippier stat…does anyone think he will hold down a regular starting spot?
Spurs defence is so attractive yet so mysterious, Ive got at least 4 players on my watchlist but none will be in my team until I see some gametime with my own eyes
Indeed! I rate Trippier highly and he seems to have had a solid preseason but Walker will always pose a first team threat – annoying!
I remember Dier last season for them, complete unknown right back who became the most transferred in GW2 player because of his GW1 heroics vs West Ham, soon fizzled out … Trippier has the potential to be very good I agree if he can secure RB
Absolutely top draw Chins great effort & a very interesting read.
A couple of decisions to make still Ozil or Caz cant stretch to Wally leaning towards Ozil.
Go Caz mate, Ozil will, only frustrate you – Caz muh more consistent. Well thats my view anyway.
Thoughts on Ramsey Cookie? I feel Caz will play a deeper role this year so may not get so many points.
You may be right Burnsy – I didn’t see the game yesterday and to be honest I wouldn’t read too much into a pre-season match vs Chelsea. Caz i feel will still be influential and will be a fairly consistent deliverer of points – as will Walcott, Ramsey etc. Ozil will do ok vs the smaller teams but disappears vs the better teams.
Caz on penalties swings it probably but I would consider Ramsey for sure – they’ll prob score similar.
Out of them all I’d still take Walcott – his pace stands him apart from the others and even if he doesn’t start every single game, he will start most and is still clinical vs a tired defence if he is used as a sub.
Great article thks, perfect for breakfast 😉
Morning all, finally got around to reading this thanks Chins, it shows that you put in a lot of hard work Have many people had a good look at West Ham? I know they have played quite a few matches already and many are saying they will not be that great this season but I take a look at their first six games and like the look of them. Currently have Sakho in my team
Morning Migs,
Yeah i’m looking at Sakho and Payet, won’t have both but could have one. If I can find someone to rotate as those first six matches are either feast or famine – lovely home matches vs trips to Arsenal, Liverpool and City.
Hello Cookie, yeah see what you mean but I just look at home games against Leicester, Bournemouth Newcastle and Norwich and think there is value there. I know it is different manager but last year at home they weren’t too shabby. Not a fan of rotation as it caused me countless headaches last year. I’ll just chuck him in there and hope for the best. You sorted with your squad?
Fair enough Miggler – but those first away games are nasty.
Nah not sorted at all – don’t know if I will be to be honest as I can’t decide which midfielders NOT to go with…..there’s soem crackign choices this season, which should I guess mean a lot of variety in manager’s teams.
Absolutely it should! But already starting to see template teams haha. So many mid choices I have even been considering a 4.5m forward just to fill up the midfield. Don’t think that is the best choice tho.
