Stats, Stats and Some More Stats
As some of you know, I moved to the US last year from the UK. As an FPL enthusiast of many a year, one of the first things I noticed was just how huge the fantasy sports industry is over here. There are several fantasy sports programs on TV and there are regular sports programs (on the main sports channels) with sections dedicated solely to the fantasy side of the game. Imagine Gary Lineker taking 15 minutes out of Match of the day to talk about the players you should bring into your fantasy teams for the following week.
Another thing that grabbed my attention was just how into statistics Americans are when it comes to their sports, and fantasy sports in particular. American Football, Baseball, Basketball, it doesn’t matter.
Two of my favourite things in life are ‘Sports’ and ‘Spreadsheets filled with sports data’. I was in heaven, and I needed to be part of things. I signed up into a friend’s American fantasy football league, despite the fact I had no idea what I was doing. I relied on researching the data from the previous season to guide my team selection. One of the first articles I came across was a piece titled “100 Fantasy Facts”, written by one of the most recognized of fantasy experts over here, ESPN’s Matthew Berry. It did exactly what it said on the tin. It was a long list of factual snippets, to help readers decide who to recruit for their fantasy teams. I loved the format and always thought it would make an interesting option for a FPL article.
And so here we are. My tribute to a much more established and knowledgeable fantasy writer than I will ever be. And my attempt to bring you, the FF247 community, some of those trends and quirks within FPL stats that might have passed you by. I wondered if I could get to 247 facts, but that was too ambitious. 100 facts seemed to boring. So the only logical conclusion was to stop at 133. Well, why not?
My disclaimer: Facts can be found to support almost any argument. I haven’t gone into this to talk up (or talk down) any particular player. Instead, I’ve cut the data from last season (and in some cases the last few seasons) many different ways and made observations along the way. Ignore what you want. Use what you want. Just remember, you can’t argue with the facts. You just can’t. That’s why they’re called ‘Facts’.
I hope you enjoy it.

Would it be a fatal error in not having a Chelsea defender to begin with?
It would be mean dropping Milner for Aarons if I were to have one (not sure on Aarons’ game time though, despite how good he is and the fixtures aren’t great)
Could alternatively get Ibe..
AT, it wouldn’t bother me not having a Chelsea defender for the first few weeks. Plenty will disagree but I think City will score against them and they always struggle at West Brom.
Cheers Cookie, struggling to make my team even without one! haha
Think Bellerin is nailed on? Can’t really stretch to Kos..
AT, I assume given yesterday’s line up that Bellerin is no.1, but I would think Debouchy gets game time also. Get Cech!
Cookie, prefer two rotating keepers and keepers for worse teams get more save points so I was trying to avoid that but it may have to happen!
AT, that’s fair enough mate – but is it better than a defender who gives you worries every time the line ups are announced?
Very true! I’ll have another look at my team aha
Morning people,
Anyone pick the bones out of this lot? Ideally would like Hazard over Cesc but can’t quite squeeze an extra 0.5m from anywhere. 2m ITB.
Caulker to Cedric
Fab to Hazard
Done 😉
please RMT guys
Adrian Hamer
Ivanovic Mertesacker Clyne Francis Baker
Sterling Fabregas Henderson Ritchie Wanyama
Rooney Pelle Giroud
2.5mn in the bank for Aguero
looks good
Looks good on the whole to me too Nishant.
If I may point out a couple of things – Hamer has left Leicester so you’ll have to play Adrian each week – as per the chat with Migs above, lovely looking home matches are surrounded by tough away trips. And given their poor defensive record in the Europa, I wouldn’t be that confident on clean sheets.
Up front I’d lose Giroud to a cheaper bod and upgrade Ritchie to an Arsenal mid – Caz or Ramsey or even Walcott if affordable.
cheers cookie
am planning to keep a One man GK for d season, d second being a non playin GK
just believe in d long run Adrian will make d difference
coming to mids, Caz it is for Ritchie
Giroud to?
help mate. not sure
whom do i get in? has to be worth 6.5 or somethin
Nishant,
Well Wilson of Bournemouth gives you decent early fixtures and rotates with Wanyama….not sure if that’s a good thing or not!!
Lambert and Sakho would be the more proven names that immediately spring to mind.
sakho might be good.
not sure on d Fab situation.
wanna go wid two city mids, i.e. Sterling n Yaya
saves me 0.5
d tuffest job in FPL really is to pick d GW1 team
urgh
Opinions on Kane? Certainly has the fixtures early on..
Anyone you prefer who is cheaper?
Awesome effort Chins.
In all honesty, I’m more confused about my team now, then I was a few weeks ago. Don’t know shit, doubting everyone.
Lol Raz I feel the exact same way!
……..
Ok boys and girls, this is what I have thus far.
One playing keeper, but I’m happy with Pants, the fixtures are ok and he tends to make a few saves so there!
Defence – Cedric & Mert speak for themselves. Targett is in to take advantage of a playing 4mln defender until Bertrand returns. By then hopefully another 4mln playing defender will have shown his face. Huth & Mings rotate ok.
Midfield – sacrilege, no Hazard!! May regret it but the 2.5mln elsewhere is useful to begin with and I’m banking on Cesc continuing his usual early season form playing in the no.10 role. May regret it, I’ll live with it.
Theo and Mane are self-explanatory. Milner I believe to be exceptional value at 7mln.
Van Ginkel is a punt who rotates really well with Sakho and the pair give me fixtures of: LIV, LEI, BOU, WBA, NEW, LEI, BOU, Villa/Stoke over 8 GWS.
Strikers – Sakho I have covered. Kane speaks for himself. And Kun is Kun. If not for for GW1 I’ll likely get Rooney until Kun is fit.
Van Ginkel is a decent player, not too certain about him being interesting FPL wise. Wally was subbed after 60 minutes yesterday, which is a bit of a turn off for me. Rest looking decent though I personally prefer Schmeichel/Schwarzer combo. Cedric and Targett a bit of a risk. Remember Targett starting the first few games the last season but was gone after GW2. I don’t see the last one paying off, Koeman also said Bertrand will be back soonish (plus you already have Cedric).
Aslo, love Wally and sometimes him playing as a striker works (especially from FPL perspective) but I think Arsenal really need the presence of a big man upfront. Wally was on my radar all the time, till yesterday actually. Santi might be a safer option.
Yesterday hasn’t put me off Wally, Raz. Playing arguably the best defence in the league – every other game will be much easier for the Gooners. But I take your point, Caz is safer in terms of 90minute appearances and penalties. But Theo has that “FPL X-factor” – can be explosive and wouldn’t have signed his new contract without the guarantee of decent minutes – until he joins Wilshire in the treatment room.
Giroud actually looked sharper and a bigger presence than Wally. But yeah. Just afraid what Wenger will do. What suck monkeyballs if Wally didn’t start. As for Kun, you reckon he will start? Last City game they were garbage and you don’t want to lose points at the start of the season, so I reckon he could start.
The decision on Kun can wait until after Friday’s presser – as I said above, Rooney can come in until Kun defo starts.
I know a lot of people are stepping away from Depay but I feel dude can explode once he does find his way in the middle. Prefer him from the left flank or in a free role so he can use his runs, speed, body. Now he has to play a different type of game he’s used to. If he gets settled he’ll def. go up to 10.5m.
Wouldn’t disagree Raz, but I’d want some evidence that he can perform (and is allowed to perform in his favoured position) before jumping on him.
Sounds like you already rated your team. 😉
Cookie- for a Hazardless team I like it. Well thought out all over the place and the rotation between Sakho and Van Ginkel is sound. The only worry is no Hazard but we know your reasoning and its the risks you take that could pay off.
Migs, thanks.
As Raz said maybe Schmeichel and Schwarzer is better – saves me 0.5mln and means I can turn Van Ginkel into Walters (urgh) or Adam, thus keeping the Stoke/Hammers rotation – or go for this Ritchie chap from Bournemouth who everyone is raving about – the rotation with Hammers is also good…..thoughts?
Lens already scored some goals for Sunderland and has been looking like their brightest most interesting player. Which could be awesome since they have superb fixtures ahead.
O ya then I would do that rather, not much difference between Leicester and Sunderland defence anyway. If you go Stoke then I would rather Adam then Walters. Bmouth fixtures are good but they are an unknown quantity so might be better to wait and see. Altough their fixtures are also decent.
But it’s Sunderland…….
The Sunderland comment was to Raz re Lens!
Dick Advocaat is a decent coach and he will set them up right. We’ll see. I think Lens will come good. I’m also eying Chadli whom is just 0.5m more expensive. Will Chadli start every game though?
Raz, I would assume Chadli starts most games yes.
Do you think it’s worth paying up for PVA then ?
Cookie, a very very sound team. I had Ginkel in for a long time but I’ve convinced myself to go with Joselu as Stoke coverage, Ginkel as box-to-box might not bag the points we’d want. Could swap him for a Hammers mid to keep rotation? I really like the idea of targett as short term 4m option, I had to downgrade Butland to Rudd this morning to bring in Lukaku as a week1 punt. Might do Targett instead.
Cheers Webstar, interesting idea – to be honest the only West Ham mid i would look at is Payet and that combo is not affordable.
Reece Oxford is another possible at 4mln – he’s played a lot pre-season, though it remains to be seen if he will get enough game time in the league. Very highly thought of though and can play in midfield.
