Sunday Review Gameweek 21 – FPL Fantasy Premier League

Newcastle 0-2 Man City

Photo 12-01-2014 21 08 34In the early Sunday game sponsored by “Specsavers” Newcastle will feel rightly aggrieved after losing this engrossing encounter that saw City move to the top of the Premier League. Edin Dzeko gave the away side the lead in the 8th minute when the brilliant Aleksander Kolarov broke down the left and sent in a fine cross that was met by the Bosnian striker who tucked the ball into the net beyond Tim Krul. But the main talking point, and yet another diabolical refereeing decision, occurred in the 33rd minute when Cheick Tiote scored what should have been a thumping 30 yard goal, Yoan Gouffran was contentiously ruled to be off-side when the ball was struck but clearly he did not touch the ball. The officials deemed him to have been in Joe Harts’s line of sight but, as Alan Pardew argued at length later, the keeper would have had no chance anyway such was the ferocity of the strike. The resulting melee saw Cabaye and Sissoko booked for dissent and it was clear that the Newcastle players were affected by the decision. Having had 80% of the possession after City’s first goal the home side were right to be annoyed. The half time whistle couldn’t come soon enough for both managers as yellow cards were issued to players from both  sides for needless misdemeanours. The second half could have gone either way, Cabaye threatening from distance for Newcastle and Negredo and Nasri coming close for City. Loic Remy was the villain this time for the Toon as he wasted the hosts’ best chance, firing straight into Hart’s legs as the City defence were caught napping. The match had eight minutes of injury time mainly due to a cynical foul by Yanga-Mbiwa who brought down Samir Nasri and he was forced to leave the game on a stretcher close to tears. Initial reports are that it could be a serious knee injury. City now started to push forward in an attempt to kill the game off and after Fernandinho had hit the bar with a header and Steven Taylor had cleared off the line, Negredo finished the game off by rolling the ball in after a rebound from Tim Krul in the final seconds. The City juggernaut keeps rolling on and if they can win ugly away from home consistently they will be very difficult to stop in the march towards another Premier Title.

Bonus Points: Kolarov (3), Dzeko (2), Demichelis & Silva (1)

Stoke 3-5 Liverpool

s and sSundays other match was a torrid and boring affair and not worthy of a mention!! Good grief, we were treated to a fantastic spectacle that had everything you could want on a Sunday afternoon. Liverpool emerged the winners after a quite remarkable game and looked to be walking it having raced into a two goal lead within 32 minutes following a Ryan Shawcross own goal and a Luis Suarez strike. But the Britannia Stadium is a difficult place to get a result and having only lost one of their last ten at home Stoke were not going to roll over and lie down. Mark Hughes has instilled some fight in this team and two ex-Liverpool players did their damndest to get Stoke back into the game, first Peter Crouch’s header pulled one back before Charlie Adam thumped in the second from the edge of the area to pull Stoke level.
Steven Gerrard on his 650th Liverpool appearance, restored Liverpool’s lead on 51 minutes with a penalty after Raheem Sterling drew Marc Wilson into a foul and then Suarez fired in an angled shot to make it 4-2 to the visitors, following some wonderful play from Daniel Sturridge who cut inside from the left to set him up. Jonathan Walters looked to have set up a tense finish by reducing the deficit in the 85th minute, but Sturridge celebrated his return from an ankle injury by scoring Liverpool’s fifth, having seen his initial effort saved by Jack Butland he was able to find the net on the second attempt. A great game to watch and more interestingly for us FPL Managers, “S & S” could be back!

Bonus Points: Suarez (3), Gerrard (2), Sturridge (1)

The problem with 2 players from the same team in the same position is what happens is the dont score? Yes they should score… but still.
Im also not sold on Rodriguez…
But Suarez and Aguero are must haves… how much you got to spend on a 3rd striker then though?

      • Ant14 says:

But that could be said about 2 attackers from different teams.

I just feel something saying Sturridge will do more than Aguero. Suarez is top goal scorer after missing the start of season, and Sturridge is 3rd missing alot of games towards the end. Together i think there a must.

      Ant

I’m planning Aguero, Suarez, Rodriguez. Alternating between 3-4-3 & 3-5-2 (Sterling and Rodriguez) depending on fixtures.

      • Ant14 says:

I think ime going to go with Suarez, Sturridge.

        • Ant

I considered that too, had the two of them earlier and paid huge dividends. But I cast my mind back to how unplayable Aguero was, and I think I just have to include him.

        • Ant14 says:

I have Baines and Coleman aswell. All anyone says is how bad of an idea it is, but at the start of the season it paid of, and this past weekend it paid of. Some chances are worth taking.

        • Ant

Its just personal preference to have double defensive cover or not. I personally don’t so it but it can pay rewards. You’ve picked those two on their potential to attack as well but there must be some amount of ££s tied up there but nothing in the rules to say where your money has to be spent !

          Good luck with it.

        Morning GP….

Like your plan for Aguero & Suarez….!
However the Sterling & J.Rod rotation might be a problem now Sturridge is back…
Think Stirlings game time may be cut…?

        • bigpopz

Morning sir, yeah well aware of the risk with Sterling but attacking Liverpool coverage for £5.0 appeals to me and I should have three playing subs to cover for him. (J-Rodriguez, Chester & Parr) so shouldn’t ever score zero becuase he doesn’t play one week.

I’m encouraged by Rodgers dismissing having him out on loan so he is obviosuly lined up for some part in the team.

Hey what do you guys think about this WC:
    Speroni (Mc Gregor)
    Baines, Koscielny, Bardlsey, Chester, Gabidon
    Hazard, Ozil, Silva, Cabaye, Huddlestone
    Aguero, Suarez, Lukaku
And 0,3 in the bank in case of slight price changes. Thinking of activating it next GW hoping that there wont be too many price changes that will affect me!

      Ant14 says:

I have Baines and Coleman, but if I had to pick 1 I’d stick with Coleman. Maybe you should do the change, save around 1.3m for your keeper.

      • KungFuKingCantona says:

Well, I am kicking myself in the nutts for selling Coleman in the first place when I had him from the start! Therefore I though Baines would good to have since he is on FK and penalty duties. Coleman does not stop scoring but I guess him and Baines should have from now on the same number of points?

        • Ant14 says:

Yeah they probably will. But the price difference is big.

        • KungFuKingCantona says:

“Only” 0.6 to be honest. I think my FPL pride is getting in the way of buying Coleman 1 mil more expensive than I sold him! 😉 But yes depending on price increase and such I might have to go the Coleman route!

      RITZ says:

Hey kung fu. Not sure if I would double up on Palace and Hull at the back. Otherwise it looks good

      • KungFuKingCantona says:

Thanks RITZ! Well my plan is not to play Kos and Baines all the time. Then have the two GK and defender who has on paper the easiest game. Taking a risk but Hull and Palace are quite good and have improved , but if the plan fails I can use a FT to upgrade further down the line.

    • 32.3

      Kungfu

Two playing GKS, dependable reserves as back-up, money spread nicely about the team including the best two strikers and in my book, the best three creative MIDS in the league – yep lost to like about it.

      • KungFuKingCantona says:

Cheers TGP! My aim was to spread my funds evenly for once and have good enough back ups not to have to use my FT every week. I had only one playing GK till date so I wanted to try to have 2 and see if that plan turns out okay. Also taking a punt on Huddlestone having the odd cameo on my team and maybe score more than the usual 2 pointer 😉

    RITZ says:

    Hi all!
How should I use my FT this week? Im playing WC next week.

    Mignolet, Marshall
    Coleman, Shaw, Parr, Chester, M.Olsson
    Silva, Ozil, Hazard, Cabaye, Sterling
    Suarez, Lukaku, J.Rod.

    Bank: 4,4

I decided to get Sturridge in for J.Rod just for this week. But then I realized I already have 3 LIV players in my team… Suggestions?

    • 33.1
      Ant14 says:

Maybe take Sterling out. Now Sturridge is back, sterling will get less game time.

    • 33.2
      KungFuKingCantona says:

How about getting Negredo in for the Cardiff game? And take J.Rod out. Worth a punt maybe if City trash Cardiff? But then wait for tonights game because if ever Ozil get an injury it would be better to be able to swap him out with the FT

  4. 34
    Ant14 says:

    My Team:

    Mignolet

    Baines // Shaw // Coleman

    Hazard // Toure // Lallana // Ozil

    Suarez // Adebayour // Sturridge

    Subs: Chester, Gabbidon, Amalfitanno

    • 34.1
      KungFuKingCantona says:

Who is you back up keeper? I had Mignolet but decided to let him go once I WC. His low amount of CS is annoying. He has good fixtures ahead but can’t keep that CS. If not very nice looking team you got there but not having Aguero might come and bite you in the behind at some point maybe?!

  5. 35
    Shep says:

    Eriksen or Lallana?
I have Adebayor as well though so leaning towards Lallana

    • 35.1
      Calvin Clyne says:

I don’t really understand the reasoning behind not getting one player you want because you already have another from the same team. If they are competing for places then it’s understandable I suppose, but I don’t see how Ade will be taking any points off Eriksen. I’d go with him over Lallana.

    Bigpopz says:

    Morning chaps…

    Ok so WC active ….
    Please RMT ..Ta

    Mcgregor /
    Coleman / Sagna / Kolorov.
    Lallana / Hazard / Eriksen / Silva.
    Sturridge / Negrado / Suarez.

Subs: Gk Mannone / Azpilecueta / Jauzaj / Chester.

Got 2.1m in bank for Negrado > Aguero swop…!!!

    Your thoughts..?

    • 36.1
      Ant14 says:

Very nice team. Solid all around, wouldn’t change anything.

    • 36.2
      Shep says:

      No Arsenal attacking cover?

    • 36.3
      Calvin Clyne says:

Very nice team Bigpopz. Seems a waste having Azpil on the bench, but I guess if you have the funds then why not – it’s not as if you have a weakness elsewhere. Go with Sturridge for now if you like but I’d also keep an eye on Giroud / Podolski and if they look better over the coming GWs then it’s just an easy swap.

      The B says:

      Bigpopz

When i played my WC, i had 3 priorities:

      1. City attacking cover. They just have to score. They wont not score.
      2. Arsenal defence and attack. The team has good CS potential overall and also scores an average of 2 goals per match.
      3. Picking players keeping in mind 4 coming GWs.

Maybe you should stick in Ozil/Giroud for Arsenal’s 3 remaining good fixtures until Ramsey is up and running.
