Trends From The Top- What Are The Leaders Doing? A Look to Game-week 11

Welcome to this week’s edition of Trends From the Top. What’s great about ‘trends’ is the fact that they are trends… trends that evolve, dissipate, and adapt. It’s hard to believe that just a couple weeks ago 100% of the top managers had Aguero and now, yet understandably, 0% of the leaders have him on their team. And while it’s always possible to have a bad gameweek, 100% of all the leaders had Sanchez on their team. What other trends will we see this week? Will they help provide us with insight for GW 11? Let’s take a look.

Who was the most captained player by the top ten for Game-week 10?
This week, the top leaders were divided among 3 captains. 30% chose most unfortunately as they selected Sanchez (4 points), while another 30% decided to give Vardy the armband (10 points). The remaining 40% advantageously chose Kane which brought in 34 points. Despite 7 out of 10 of the top players having poor or average captain picks, many were able to remain near the summit.

What are some interesting similarities among the top ten?
In researching this week’s leaders, it was interesting to see that fewer of the leaders were the folks we saw early on who were using and exhausting all their chips and wildcards. Two of the leaders have yet to utilize any of the above-mentioned game-play benefits and the average for our leaders is 1.3 when looking at wildcards, all out attack, triple captain or bench boost. Additionally, none of the current leaders have ever had a successful season if one were to define success as finishing in the top 5%.

Who were the most popular players chosen by the top ten for Gameweek 10?
Goalkeepers
For this past gameweek 60% of the top managers selected Cech while 30% had Butland and 10% selected Hart.

Defenders
This week we saw 15 defenders make the cut for top managers. Interestingly enough, Kolarov (50%) was once again the only defender with an ownership rate of 50% or higher. Alderweireld and Bellerin came in at 40% while Azpilicueta was the next most popular pick with 30% ownership followed by Clyne, Smalling, Moreno and Cedric with 20% and Zouma, Jenkinson, Walker, Cresswell, Koscielny, Darmian, and Williams each with 10%.

Midfielders
When you look at midfielders, the top 10 managers had 12 different picks with several getting only 10% of the vote such as Cabaye, Bolasie, Ritchie, Mane and Wijnaldum. Sanchez was the most popular pick with 100% ownership followed by Mahrez at 80%, Payet at 70%, De Bruyne with 40%, Ayew with 30%, and Yaya Toure and Ozil each with 20%.

Forwards
This week, the front line consisted of 10 picks among the top managers which again seems to indicate that such spots are not yet solidified. Vardy came in with 80% while Kane and Bony were the next popular picks as they each received 40%. Ighalo was selected by 30% of the top managers with Costa and Bernahino receiving 20% and Martial, Ayoze, Pelle and Bojan each receiving 10% a piece.

In summation, the Must-Haves for top managers for Gameweek 10 were not many. They were Cech, Kolarov, Sanchez, Mahrez, Payet, and Vardy as they all had an ownership rate of 50% or higher.

Other interesting facts…
– The average score for Gameweek 10 among the top 10 was 55.9 points which was only 13.9 points above average for the week. Only 2 weeks ago, the average for our top leaders was 68.5 points above the average!

– England once again dominated the leader board as 50% of the top 10 were from there. The remaining three countries were Australia (currently in 1st), Scotland, Ireland, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia.

– The average team value was £103.2m with £104m being the highest team value and £102.1m being the lowest value.

– 38 points separates 1st place from 10th.

Best of luck in Game-week 11

    Tomo says:

    Hi All

I have two ft this week and there are many options in my head at the moment so could I ask for some advice on this. Team
    Myhill/Hennesey
    Azpil/Bellerin//Kompany/Cedric/Martin
    Sanchez/Debruyne/Payet/Mahrez/Davis
    Vardy/Pelle/Costa. 0.0 ITB
My original thoughts were to get in Bony but that doesn’t seem to be a popular choice on here. I haven’t seen yesterday’s game but could do Bony for Costa and Barkley for Davis. Also is it the right time to play all out attack with that front 8? Any offers of help welcome

      Hi Tomo

My thoughts on Chelsea are (well) documented elsewhere so Azpilicueta and Costa are the two I’d consider. However, I can see Costa roughing up Liverpool this weekend so you could hold him for one more. Defensively they are shot so Azpilicueta is taking up valuable funds for little or zero return. Your defence looks strong besides that so you could go cheaper and buy a back-up and reinvest funds elsewhere in future weeks. Someone of the ilk of Morgan or Evans. If you did this this week you could carry over a transfer and have two again next week.

If you want to use two then I’d do Azpilicueta to Evans and Costa to Kane if it were my squad.

      NIN says:

Weird spot this week, Tomo; 2 FT’s and a strong team that picks itself. I think i would just clear out Azpilicueta and leave it at that. He’s not doing much good for anyone this season, or that defence as a whole.

      • Tomo says:

Thanks for the replies GP and Nin. Played the WC two weeks ago hence 2 ft. Still feel a bit naked without Bony up front looking at the fixtures and Lukaku seems to be a popular pick also but every time he’s been in my team over the years he’s let me down so a big reluctance on him. I might still consider Kane as well – gonna wait until Friday anyway. Cheers

      inittowinit says:

Hi Tomo, I’m going to muddy the waters here! I’d actually ship out Costa. I think it’s finally time to accept that this is a very different Chelsea to the one we keep saw last season and keep expecting to suddenly re-emerge. Nothing wrong with Bony and certainly their next 2 games are ideal – Norwich and Villa. Wouldn’t argue against Kane or Lukaku either. I’d certainly be doing one of those.

Not sure on an Azpi replacement but I’d respectfully disagree with GP on either Evans or Morgan. Leicester can’t defend to save their lives. WBA certainly can but their fixtures after next week are something like Utd, Arsenal, West Ham and Spurs.

      • Tomo says:

Agreed on Evans with their upcoming fixtures and I already have Myhill. Can’t really trust any defence at the moment so maybe I’ll hold a little longer.

        • Tomo says:

Forgot to mention, is it the right time to play all out attack with my previous suggested front 8?

        • Tomo

Those were names which jumped to mind but you see my reasoning – I meant bring in a playing defender who would normally be a back up for you. I assume you would play Bellerin, Kompany and Cedric most weeks.

        • Tomo says:

GP Agreed on both counts and many thanks for your input tonight

        • Tomo says:

So how about an Everton defender?

        • inittowinit says:

Not sure on AOA Tomo. That’s not a NO, it’s literally an unsure. Thing with AOA is that there are 2 sides to it of course – the flip is that you need to bench a defender. Obviously you’d play Kompany and Cedric this week given their games. So it comes down to Bellerin (v Swansea) or whichever one the 8 you’d bench. Close call I’ll give you that.

        • Tomo

I don’t fancy Everton defensively. Compounded by the injury to Jags now and it’s a ‘no’ from me I’m afraid.

The all-out attack is one where I agree with Init, I honestly don’t know when is the right time to use it. I assumed I would hold for when I could get 8 front players on DGWs but that may not happen.

        • inittowinit says:

GP, Tomo, glad this came up as it’s something I’ve been meaning to revisit. When we interviewed the former champions earlier in the season I remember thinking Matt nailed it. Worth another read on those ‘chip’ answers anyway as a re-cap…

          https://fantasyfootball247.co.uk/in-an-fpl-panic-here-are-some-wise-words/

        • Init

Remember well that interview. I don’t think I can honestly say I’ve had a week so far that the criteria Matt mentions (8 players with good form and fixtures and my third defender not having a good game) so it hasn’t appealed to me yet.

Having said that, as you know, I brought Wijnaldum in to my squad this past week for Wanyama so for the first time this season I now have no 4.4 ‘filler’ midfielder. The chip therefore may now become more enticing but I won’t use it until I’m convinced my front eight all have relly good points claims.on a particular week.

    • 26.4
      Silvers says:

Quite an interesting point on the AOA chip this could be the GW to use it what better time than when Kun is out.
When he’s back most will have a weak 5th MF player until possibly the end of the season Matt makes a very useful statement.
I will look at this more closely TM. 😉

      • lukealike says:

yea but it only makes sense to use it if your defenders face tough opposition. That chip is pretty useless IMO

        • inittowinit says:

I agree, it’s a throw away as and when the chance presents itself, ie you have 2 defenders left available or the rest have rubbish games and you also have 8 good attacking options available. It’s a situational chip. Any week those 2 options combine could be the right time. It’s certainly not a game changer. Triple capo and bench boost can be if deployed correctly in a DGW.

    Mitro says:

    Evening all!!

So after a disappointing GW 10 where I pretty much saw red arrows in most of my mini leagues albeit it was about 13k places I fell overall.

So my plan for GW11 is; (unless you guys have a better suggestions)

    Azpillicueta to Bertrand/kolorav
    Costa to bony/lukaku/Kane

Whilst I appreciate Costa to any of the above could be classed as a sideways move – Chelsea look sh*t and I can’t see them turning the corner for a few more weeks!

What do you think, as always your comments or thoughts would be appreciated.

    • 27.1
      NIN says:

Evening Mitro. The Azpilicueta move sounds bang on. Targets for a Costa replacement are on point too. Everton’s next ten or so games are very favorable so i’d lean toward Lukaku ahead of Kane. If you get Van Dijk then Bony could be a great option up front. I might be mad but i reckon two City is enough, for now.

  4. 28
    MattX says:

This is my team: only thing I plan on doing us Gomis out, best replacement? I’m thinking either Lukaku,Bony or Kane??

    • 28.1
      NIN says:

Lukaku, for me. Reasons are posted on previous posts laugh

      • MattX says:

The one just above talking to Mitro?? I was thinking that too but don’t you feel Lukaku can be a bit too inconsistent??

        • Mitro says:

Hi Matt – everytime I have brought the fucker in he has always let me down!!

I’m really tempted to go with Kane as none of my main rivals have him but on other hand bony is also tempting especially against Norwich

        • NIN says:

And to Eagle on the previous page. Those fixtures mate, they’re amazing. Three of the current bottom four in the next four weeks. I’ll have some of that.

        • MattX says:

Hey Mitro – that’s what he always does to me too! All three players have nice fixtures this weekend though so it makes it that slight bit harder.

NIN- I see it now, I really like Evertons fixtures it’s just I always get shafted whenever I have Lukaku but I think he could be alright till Kun comes back so even if he is doing terrible ill just change him.

        • Mitro says:

Just wished lukaku had a first touch smile

        • MattX says:

          Haha exactly!! smile

        • Mitro says:

The way I see it, is all three should do well over the coming weeks! On paper Everton do have some great fixtures but on the other hand city have so many players creating chances for bony and with silva due back this week they will get better and then we have Kane who could be about to hit some form and was pretty much fixture proof last year!!

        • MattX says:

They all have their pros and cons so I’m completely torn but I think I’m going to go with Lukaku over Bony anyway. It’s just Kane but I haven’t been impressed with him so far this season so that could swing it for me.

Quick question, I’m thinking of playing Cedric this weekend but not sure who to take off maybe Huth??

    • 28.2
    • 28.3
      Eagle says:

Mattx – I’m in your same position. I’m deciding on a Gomis replacement and I have narrowed it down to Lukaku and Kane.

      • MattX says:

Exactly it’s difficult. I stuck Bony in just because he’s a replacement for Kun. I think Lukaku is the better one on paper but I feel he’s inconsistent whenever I get him he doesn’t nothing and when I don’t have him he scores.

        • Eagle says:

Last gameweek i had already lined up my transfer plans and was set on doing Gomis to Lukaku but Kane’s hat trick is making him difficult to ignore as well. I think i will sleep on it and decide tomorrow since none of them will change in price tonight (well so it seems).

        • MattX says:

If that’s how you feel mate then go for it! No point rushing into an decisions you’ll just end up kicking yourself if it goes belly up.

  5. 29
    OriginalRambo says:

Thoughts on this lot lads? Any change needed for this weekend?

    Howard
    Bellerin Walker Bertrand
    Payet Mata KdB Sanchez
    Vardy Bony Pelle (C)

    Elliot; Watson, Moreno, Hangeland.

    • 29.1
      MattX says:

I don’t see anything wrong mate can’t see where can be improved on.

    • 29.2
      OriginalRambo says:

What would people think of Mata out for Barkley? Think Lukaku is unpredictable and don’t want to lose Pelle or Bony with their upcoming games (Vardy season keeper!).

      • MattX says:

Could be a very nice move actually mate. Barkley is doing well and has some great fixtures. I’d say go for it.

        • OriginalRambo says:

Cheers Matt! I’m edging closer and closer, no one in my league has Everton cover and they’ve much worse problems than changing their front 7 so two in my team could be good differentials this week. Mata to drop tonight, if not, definitely tomorrow night is another reason, free up Kun money…

        • MattX says:

I’d do it now mate, I don’t see Mata out scoring Barkley even if Barkley doesn’t do fantastic each game.

    • 29.3
      Mitro says:

Team looks decent mate! You definitely set on pelle as cappo?

      • OriginalRambo says:

Cheers Mitro! I don’t know why I put it beside him tbh but playing a team who’ve conceded 10 in their last two and with his home form he is defiantly a good option, along with KdB and Bony. Will be a big week to get captain choices right!

        • Mitro says:

It makes sense – they have conceded 10 in 2 games now, I have pelle but I will go with either Kane or bony depending on which one I bring in!

  6. 30

How would you guys use the FTs?…atleast 1 one of them. And who would you bench?

    • 30.1
      MattX says:

That’s a tough one I’d downgrade Mane and upgrade Ighalo or just upgrade Mane but then you’d have 5 good midfielders and will probably have to bench Ighalo anyway.

    • 30.2
      inittowinit says:

      Hi FDMS and Matt,

Sorry Matt but I seem to be disagreeing with everybody tonight so it’s your turn now but don’t take it personally! I certainly wouldn’t be touching Mane with Bournemouth at home followed soon after by Sunderland and then also Stoke and Villa at home in 2 of the next 3. Think I’d probably upgrade Ighalo to Lukaku or Bony. Kane is out of reach here I think, price wise. It’d mean probably benching Mahrez but they have West Brom away so it’s a fairly easy argument to make especially given as you have Vardy anyway.

      • MattX says:

Evening Init – that makes a lot of sense to me and FDMS should definitely take your advice. I didn’t think about Mahrez playing West Brom but he could easily sit in the bench for one game and upgrade Ighalo(at least we’re agreeing on that!! Haha) I’d go with Bony. I also didn’t look at the Southampton fixtures and they sound tasty haha
