Trends From The Top A look to Gameweek 34

Fantasy football tips Welcome to this week’s edition of Trends From the Top. This is a particularly exciting edition of Trends as we are premiering for the first time on FF247! For those not familiar with this piece, we take a look at the top ten performing managers via fantasy.premierleague.com in an attempt to recognize distinct, successful trends which may help us moving forward to the next upcoming gameweek as we all look to personally climb and advance within our leagues. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at gameweek 33 results from our top ten fantasy leaders.

Who was the most captained player by the top ten for Gameweek 33?
It should serve as little shock that Sergio Aguero was given the armband from 9 of the top 10 managers. With 2 goals in gameweek 32, his 5 week drought without goals was over and it does in fact seem he is nearly back on top and form as he was able to clinch a goal against West Ham in GW33 thus providing his managers with 12 points. The remaining manager selected Murray (4 points).

Who were the most popular players chosen by the top ten for Gameweek 33?
Goalkeepers: For gameweek 33, the most popular goalie was Krul as he was selected by 50% of the top ten. Myhill received 30% followed by Heaton and Hart each with 10% ownership.

Defenders: Only 11 defenders made the list for our top players and when we look at defenders for Gameweek 33, we see one dominant player; Terry was selected by 90%. Terry was followed by Clyne at 50%, Wollscheid at 40%, Dawson, Ivanovic, Alderweireld, Baines, Fonte and Bertrand at 20% and finally Rose and Lescott with 10%.

Midfielders: When you look at midfielders, the top 10 managers had 12 different players. Unlike past weeks, where we would see less variety, this weekend, diversification of midfielders came into play. Hazard was the most popular pick with an ownership rate of 90% followed by Silva at 80%, Eriksen at 70%, Boyd at 30%, Bolasie and Mane at 20% and Yaya Toure, Walters, Mahrez, Gibson, Fabregas, and Cork each with 10%.

Forwards: This week, only 4 forwards made the cut. 90% of our leaders had Kane (50.7% ownership) and Aguero (25.9% ownership), 40% Murray (5.2% ownership) and 10% Vardy (5.2% ownership).

In summation, the Must-Haves for top managers for Gameweek 33 were Krul, Terry, Clyne, Eriksen, Kane, Hazard, Silva, and Aguero as they all had an ownership rate of 50% or higher.

Knowing that Gameweek 34 is a Double Gameweek for Chelsea, Hull, Liverpool and Leicester, how many DGW players were sitting on the bench and were there any trends?
Due to the fact that Chelsea* played in GW 33, this narrowed the pool down and as we know, Hazard had 90% ownership, Terry 90%, Ivanovic 20%, and Fabregas 10%. There were no Hull players to be found. In regards to Leicester, one top owner had Hamer on the bench. For Liverpool, we found Mignolet (10%), Skrtel (10%), and Moreno (10%).

While Liverpool, Leicester and Hull players were far and few between, we did see Sanchez at 40%, Ozil, van Aanholt and Naughton at 30% and finally, Foster and Dawson at 20%.

*4 out of the top 10 had Remy on the bench and didn’t play this week due to a muscle injury. He is still listed as having a 75% chance to play.

What do we know about our #1 manager?
The current leader, Atletico Marchid**(Simon March) of Singapore had NOT deployed his wildcard until the end of gameweek 33 (yesterday). Yes, our top leader’s wildcard is currently active for gameweek 34! This is huge and with a current lead of 24 points, I definitely see this as a major advantage as we approach the final gameweeks. He has the upper hand and I do predict that he will come out victorious. Simon also has a rather impressive fantasy football track record. In 2011/2012 he finished 6436 and in 2012/2013 he finished 3,833. Simon has maintained the #1 position for 10 weeks and has been in the top 10 for 16 weeks.

Other interesting facts:
The average score for Gameweek 33 among the top 10 was 59.9 points which is an impressive 21.9 points above the average of 38 for the week.
Singapore took the top spot! 50% of the managers are from England, 10% Algeria, 10% Australia, 10% Germany and 10% Pakistan.

Our manager in 11th (had previously held 8th place) is from Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands. Knowing absolutely nothing about this region, I came to discover that it has a very small population…2500 in change.

So there’s a reflective look at Gameweek 33.
Will knowing any of this information, impact or influence any fantasy football trades? Let us know in the comment section below and as always, best of luck in Gameweek 34!

It’s interesting to see all the heavy hitters have a similar set of players to me. If only I had their ranking.
Thanks for the interesting write up Beka and welcome to FF247!

In answer to Cookie’s question, I don’t think there’s a set time to use your WC, you could be unfortunate and have a load of injuries and or banned players at the same time so it would be wise to use it then.
My general rule is unless I really need it, I will keep it and now there are only a few weeks left now seems as good a time as any to use it.

I think Gav has hoodwinked you slightly with the Svalbard & Jan Mayen islands pick, in fact I don’t think our Gavin would know a Fjord if it slapped him in the face, I’m as guilty of this kind of stunt as anyone as I joined the Mongolian league this season but even the competition in that has been a bit too stiff for me this year so I’ll be looking for something a bit more niche (All suggestions welcome, I know I’m not the only one) for next seasons international league.

I do like the fact that you looked it up though, I’ve wasted countless hours on Wiki and Youtube clicking external links to something completely irrelevant to why I’ve gone there in the first place but don’t we all. Cheers Rebekah good stuff.

I’m pretty sure none of us have ever been to Bonaire, Saint Eustatius and Saba but that’s where the site team is residing this year! laugh

Thanks, Andy! Your post made me laugh. I am relieved to know I am not the only person out there who wastes countless hours browsing the web for totally useless and irrelevant stuff. I will also have you know that when you look up Jan Mayen, there is a population of 17 and change! So yes, player #11 picked a really great place to reside! In discussing this with my dad before publishing, we decided Vatican City might be a good move. Do folks in VC even play ff? Cheers!

Made my Monday with this breakdown Beka, well done, I was taking notes as I was reading it twas that good, kudos. Shrewd how someone has held on to the wildcard this long, little wonder he’s tops.
Now, guys is it healthy to tinker your team to have the most DGWers possible? I want to have 8 and still I feel its a bit much, so for this DGW how many do yall have, so I can feel better or worse about my situation…
Pet peeve: misspelled footballer names (e.g Wollscheid). I mispell alot and often but I cannot mispell a footballers name and die a little inside when it’s done. Learnt Wojciech Szczesny as soon as it landed.
It’s Moday, feel free to leave your football related pet peeves here too…

Thanks so much Beka and welcome! Great article. It’s a great reminder for me to watch the leaders closely as I try to hang on to my mini-league lead and not piss it away…

I’ve also been fortunate to be able to hold onto my WC so here goes!

Captain Dicky and His C Men says:

Got 56 points this week, regained top spot and put some daylight in. Only had 10 players as well. Looking at the team below, what would you recommend. I’m thinking Eriksen and Cazola for Sterling and Henderson. I do have injuries but all 75% and most on the bench.

      inittowinit says:

Dicky I think those are wise moves. Just hang fire until we get a bit more of an update on Silva though. He should be fine but probably worth waiting a few days to be sure, assuming you can with price rises.

Thanks for a great debut article Beka, and welcome to FF247!! That was really interesting, amazing to see how many points those players have amassed. Very impressive (and disciplined!) play. So how are people feeling about Liverpool coverage for the DGW? I was much more excited BEFORE they played on Sunday, now I’m not so sure… any ideas what to do with this ragtag group of underachievers?? Have 1 FT and willing to take a -4 hit if it’s worth it.

      inittowinit says:

Hey Red, I wouldn’t let that result deter you too much I don’t think. They still have the best DGW in my opinion. I’d look at 2 of 3 from Sterling, Hendo and Coutinho. If you’re feeling brave then add in Skrtel.

      • RedVT says:

Thanks init, much appreciated. Would you drop Silva or keep him? Was originally planning on Dawson and Eriksen out for Skrtel and Henderson, but that was before Silva got injured. Could keep Dawson and get Sterling and Hendo in for Silva and Erik I suppose, just hate to sell Silva if he’s fit.

        • inittowinit says:

If he’s fit I wouldn’t drop him. I’d pick Sterling or Coutinho over
Hendo though so maybe needs must.

        • RedVT says:

OK, thanks again. Will take a closer look tonight at work before the price changes. smile

        • FC Sanchez says:

I’ve gone Sterling, Hendo and Skrtel. As someone else has mentioned, Coutinho’s an excellent player but his fantasy returns haven’t matched his play (I’ve had him since those two back-to-back wonder goals but in hindsight I should have brought in Hendo who has delivered way more in terms of fantasy returns). Coutinho does get in scoring positions and likes to take shots so who knows on a given game week. Also, Studge might be back (no?) so I’d keep an eye on him as well.
