Trends From The Top Gameweek 5

fantasy football tips hints Welcome to this week’s edition of Trends From the Top. This is a particularly exciting edition of Trends as we are officially a weekly feature for fantasyfootball247! Last season we had the opportunity to “test drive” this piece on the site but for those not familiar with this article, we take a look at the top ten performing managers in an attempt to recognize distinct, successful trends which may help us moving forward for the next, upcoming gameweek as we all look to personally climb and advance within our leagues. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at gameweek 5 results from our top ten fantasy leaders keeping in mind that 1) West Ham and Newcastle have yet to play for GW 5 and 2) the season is relatively “young” and it may be slightly premature to establish credible and non-erratic trends.

Who was the most captained player by the top ten for Gameweek 5?
The captain picks for GW 5 were rather interesting as there were in fact 8 different captain picks amongst the top ten. 50% of the choices were either defenders or goalies. Again, the season is rather new so perhaps these picks are reflective of folks being unable to hone-in on predictable and reliable captains in the form of midfielders and forwards. The 2014/2015 rankings of these top 10 may also reflect the unusual selection of captain picks as none of them were top performers (although a Man City defender proved to be a good pick). For GW 5 Kolarov and Kompany each received 20% of the vote while Mahrez, Aguero, Cech, Lukaku, Yaya Toure and Pedro each received 10%.

Who were the most popular players chosen by the top ten for Gameweek 5?
Goalkeepers: For gameweek 5, the most popular goalie was Cech as he was selected by 70% of the top ten. Hart received 20% followed by Romero with 10% ownership.

Defenders: 12 defenders made the list for our top players and when we look at defenders for Gameweek 5, we see two dominant players; Kolarov was selected by 70% and Kompany was selected by 80% of top managers. Smalling and Coleman came in at 40%, Azpilicueta, Sagna and Koscielny at 20%, and Targett, Richards, Dier, Gomez and Fonte each with 10%.

Midfielders: When you look at midfielders, the top 10 managers had 14 different players. Four players were selected by 5 of the top ten those being Ayew, Yaya Toure, Mahrez and Tadic. Barkley was the next popular pick with 40% ownership followed by Cazorla at 30%, Pedro, Sterling, Ozil and Mata with 20% and Chadli, Willian, Walcott and Matic each with 10%.

Forwards: This week, 9 forwards made the cut and only Pelle had an ownership of 50%. Benteke came close with 40% of the vote followed by Giroud, Lukaku and Gomis with 30%, Wilson, Defoe and Vardy with 20% and Aguero with 10%.

In summation, the Must-Haves for top managers for Gameweek 5 were Cech, Kolarov, Kompany, Ayew, Yaya Toure, Mahrez, Tadic, and Pelle as they all had an ownership rate of 50% or higher.
Currently, the most popular players in the game are Cech (31.1% overall ownership), Kompany (36.7%), Mahrez (40.4%) and Benteke (34.4%).

How many of the Top Ten have deployed/activated “chips?”
As you know, this year, they mixed things up a bit to add more options to the game which now include the Bench Boost, Triple Captain and All Out Attack. It was most fascinating to find that ALL top managers but 1 (manager #10) had deployed one or more of these chips. In all, 12 chips have been used. Bench Boost has been activated 6 times followed by Triple Captain and All Out Attack each with 3. This week, Nogoaldado, currently in the 5th position decided to activate his Bench Boost and was most successful as he received the 24 points for those teammates sitting on the sidelines.

What do we know about our #1 manager?
Our current leader, Warung Tegal (Husein Baydowi) of Indonesia is currently the top dog coming in with an overall score of 341 points and a gameweek total of 58 points. Warung played his Triple Captain chip during GW 2 and brought in 82 points. Last year, Warung finished the game 177,496 and for the 2013/14 season finished an unimpressive 1,485,210. Actually when you look at all our current leaders, none of them have impressive track records so I would be extremely surprised to see any of them hang around for more than a couple of weeks.

Other interesting facts:
– The average score for Gameweek 5 among the top 10 is currently 62.2 points which is an impressive 36 points above average for the week.

– Indonesia takes the top spot. 40% of the managers are from England, 10% USA, 10% Denmark, 10% Wales, 10% India and 10% Poland.

– The average team value among the top ten is £101m.

So there’s a reflective look at Gameweek 5.
Will knowing any of this information, impact or influence any fantasy football trades? Let us know in the comment section below and as always, best of luck for Gameweek 6!

Many thanks for this Beka and welcome back! Interesting to see the Chips stats and how they may be distorting the tables a bit. Makes it difficult to judge even in small ML’s unless you take the time to check each team and how many they’ve used so far.

“Aguero with 10%”… that is just shocking! laugh

Thanks a lot for this Beka. It’ll only get more useful as the season progresses.

40 with Payet still to play. Above average on points but still not anywhere near good enough. Got 2 FTs – one will be used to get rid of Huth and then the other might depend on Aguero’s injury (but then who would you replace him with?!)

      • Silvers says:

Saf , Swirly it’s been hard work so far this season who would you get in for Kun , no one seems to be firing let’s hope Payet comes good tonight.

        • SAFs_hairdryer says:

Silvers, that’s a tough question. It seems wrong picking someone else cheaper when I imagine you r squad is built around Aguero (much like most people’s. Personally I will wait and see on his injury and hope he plays or is out for a week at most and then hang on to him. The way this season is panning out playing 4 at the back might be a better option anyhow!

If I had to choose I would probably opt for Giroud. The only in form players are Vardy/Naismith and they’re so cheap you’d have enough cash for a squad of 16!

Sit tight and wait for the news. Perhaps try to get 5 playing mids just in case

Benteke has decent 2 home games.

Don’t worry – I’ve not picked a captain yet either!

    Hi Beka

Thanks for this roundup and I’m very pleased to hear this will be a regular article. Although the chips do definitely distort the figures in my opinion (I’ve used none besides the WC, which I don’t consider a chip anyway), I’d still love to be in the Top 10 and have something to build on.

The captain picks interest me the most – a hardened FPL attitude means I can rarely see me picking a defender in any circumstances. Maybe I should change!

      nishant says:

No GP. why should you change mate

its just bad days for us picking the wrong captain choice

we choose a mid or a strikes as he has 90 minutes to get something, i.e. an assist or a goal at least. while a defender needs to make just a small error or even if one of his teammate makes an error and the clean sheet and 4 points are gone. even a few seconds are enough. add on that if they concede 2

the margin of error is so thin.

      we all will do great.
      Kun will rise
      Sanchez will be flying
THE SPECIAL ONE will build a hard as a rock defence again
and with them, we will get used to climb and climb the rankings.

Slow and Steady wins the race
At the moment such is our case

wow. i got that to rhyme.
      lol
      😉
