Why Bruno Guimarães Could Be One of the Best FPL Picks at Arsenal This Season

Arsenal are Premier League champions. After more than two decades of waiting, Mikel Arteta finally delivered the title in the most dramatic of fashions.

There were wobbles, injuries, and moments where the pressure felt overwhelming, but the Gunners held on. Man City, as you can read more detail here, pushed relentlessly until the very end, but Arsenal’s resilience and squad depth proved to be the difference.

Now, with champions’ confidence behind them and a blockbuster summer signing confirmed, Arsenal are also shaping up to be one of the most exciting clubs to target in Fantasy Premier League. That signing is Bruno Guimarães, and he might just be the shrewdest FPL pick of the season.

A £75 Million Statement Signing

Arsenal spent big to bring Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United for around £75 million. At 28, he is coming into the peak years of his career, and his move to a title-winning club gives him a platform he has never had before.

At Newcastle, he was the standout player in a team that often relied on him to create and score. At Arsenal, he joins a squad full of quality, and that context actually makes him more interesting from an FPL perspective, not less.

His numbers at Newcastle were genuinely impressive. He brings goal threat, assist potential, and the kind of involvement in play that consistently generates attacking returns. At a club that creates even more chances than Newcastle, that output could be maintained or even improved.

Where Does He Fit in Arteta’s System?

The obvious question for any FPL manager is whether Guimarães will actually play enough to justify his price tag. Arteta has a crowded midfield; Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, and Myles Lewis-Skelly are all competing for minutes. On paper, that looks like a rotation nightmare.

In practice, though, the picture is more encouraging. Rice ended last season managing a hamstring issue, and Zubimendi was visibly running on fumes by the final weeks after accumulating massive minutes. Arteta will need to manage those two carefully.

Guimarães is versatile enough to play as a defensive midfielder or in a more advanced role, which gives Arteta real flexibility. Rather than being squeezed out, he is likely to become a key figure in the rotation strategy.

The Early Season FPL Opportunity

Here is the argument that FPL managers should really pay attention to. Several of Arsenal’s central midfielders, including Rice and others, went deep into the World Cup and have had limited pre-season preparation.

Guimarães, whose Brazil side exited earlier than England and Spain, has had more recovery time and is further ahead in his fitness ahead of Gameweek 1. That head start matters.

Arsenal’s fixture list in the opening five gameweeks is also relatively kind, and the team only has one midweek European match in that stretch, meaning rotation will be kept to a minimum early on.

Guimarães is well-placed to be a nailed starter in those opening rounds, and landing a reliable Arsenal midfielder at the start of a title defence, before the fixture schedule gets congested, is a smart move.

What FPL Managers Need to Weigh Up

No FPL pick is without risk, and Bruno Guimarães is no exception. At Newcastle, he was the primary penalty taker and a set-piece threat. At Arsenal, those responsibilities will likely fall elsewhere.

His defensive contribution points were also modest, which could limit his floor in blank weeks. And once the Champions League group stage heats up and Arsenal are cycling through a heavier schedule, rotation becomes a genuine concern.

The honest assessment is that he is best viewed as a strong early-season target rather than a set-and-forget option for the entire campaign. The opening gameweeks represent a window where his minutes are most likely to be consistent. If he starts well and cements his place in the XI, the decision to hold becomes easier.

Arsenal go into this campaign as champions with a point to prove and a squad further strengthened. Guimarães adds a new dimension to their midfield, and FPL managers who move early could benefit significantly before the rest of the community catches on. The risk is manageable, the upside is real, and the timing is right.
