World Cup Last 16 Rate my Team / Live Match Chat
Welcome to World Cup Last 16 Live Match Chat. No more second chances, it’s do or die time. Penalties will be missed. Tears will be shed. Let’s just hope it’s German ones for once (lol, we wrote that before Wednesday, we left it in because it’s even funnier now!). From a fantasy perspective though there sort of is a 2nd chance as you can now make unlimited transfers right up until the deadline which is on Saturday at 3pm (GMT). Which is why we’ve jumped in early with a new article, we just wanted to make sure that everyone was aware. And give everyone a chance to post up that shiny new wildcard team. Just in time for Mito returning from holiday to destroy it in the comments!
After that you get 3 free transfers for the quarter-finals and then 5 for each for the semis and the final. Choose wisely then as you don’t really want to be hitting the next round with half of your team eliminated. We move onto a 2 game a day format now spread over 4 days. Or in other words that’s 4 bites at the captain cherry if you plan it correctly.
To recap then from a Fantasy perspective there are really just 4 things to be aware of right now –
1. It’s wildcard time all round.
Unlimited transfers up until KO on Saturday. That’s the main one.
2. You have a new budget of £105m, an increase of £5m from previously.
This is because, in theory, the ‘budget’ options have probably now exited stage left. This is not altogether strictly true just yet as there are a few bargains left but just be aware that the budget grip will tighten the further we progress through the rounds as some of these may indeed go home this round.
3. Price changes are in effect.
Sort of, we think… prices have increased on some players since the last round. Despite the rules stating this –
“Original player prices will remain the same until the group stage (Round 3). Upon completion of the group stage, player prices will change depending on performances”.
‘Upon completion of the group stages’… they already went up prior to that. And there’s no indication as to when that may happen again, or indeed when, or of course why. Basically then they’re making it up as they go along as usual.
4. Increase to 4 players per team as opposed to 3.
As it says on the tin.

Morning guys another go at this wc RMT is it time to B.B. ???????
Morning SIlvers, it could be an ideal BB round with Belgium having a great looking game…can you get 2 more Belgians in there? 2 defenders +Lukaku & Courtois?
Looks like a good team to me and yeah I’d say it’s a good GW to BB
Cheers Smash & Cookie I will have a look at more Belgium not a bad idea
Hello friends. Pardon my intermittent attendance. Been travelling for work. Here’s my team for the round. How does it look.? Anything that i might be missing? Cheers all.
I like it Constantine, you seem to have the main bases covered as far as I can see.
Inui is an enabler but allows everything else so that’s fine.
I like it mate, I think the majority of your players are in teams that’ll progress which is a definite bonus
Thanks a lot Cookie and Gear. Didn’t get much time to fiddle with the team though. Hope for the best. Cheers both
Been watching the Irish coverage of the World Cup and also listening to SSN discussing it and the difference in discussion on the England team is vast. Last night the Irish pundits were ripping into that England ‘reserves’ and this morning Sol Campbell is saying they were great but the starting XI is obvious. Last night Dier was ripped into with the lads wondering why he is even playing and that RLC had a poor game, and Rose was defending terribly for that goal yet this morning… Dier doesn’t get mentioned, RLC is great and has played some great passes and touches and could replace Alli if he still isn’t injured and Rose had an amazing game where he did nothing wrong.
Is this Irish bias against England or is it England being blind to their own faults? I’m really interested in what people think so let’s get some sort of discussion here. I’m a supporter of both Ireland and England so I don’t have any bias but I actually agree with the Irish lads right now. Maybe a bit harsh on RLC though I will admit. England have no creativity in midfield which was pointed out on Irish TV, no mention of it on SSN.
Matt, probably a bit of both to be fair. We all know what the English press is like – a couple of wins (games they should have won anyway and they only sneaked past Tunisia) and they get over-excited and start the silly speculation.
Then some Irish and Scots jump on and take the piss as if the whole of England expects us to win the World Cup!! I guess it’s fun to want the ‘auld enemy’ to lose. Is it jealousy or just historical attitudes? Both I guess. Whatever.
Anyone with a semblance of common sense would struggle to see England getting past Croatia or Brazil right now, certainly Brazil. However, I guess it’s nice dream and let’s face it, Colombia hardly impressed yesterday and will likely miss their best player on Tuesday – personally I fancy England to beat Colombia. And if they do, it’s Sweden or Swiss – again, i’d expect to win there.
If that all comes to fruition, it is time to dream. Of course it is. A WC semi-final!
I know I’d rather play Colombia and S or S than Japan and Brazil.
On the creativity or lack of it last night, who cares? It was a reserve game FFS. No one really cared if they won or lost. Maybe that’s wrong. Personally I’m glad we have the draw we have but we could still lose Tuesday and I guess the knives will be out.
I think that is what the Irish and Scots love about the English press how they get overexcited so easily when like you say they should be winning those games. I don’t think it’s jealousy because the Irish and Scots know they are decent but will never have the talent pool England have besides Ireland did the best of the ‘Home Nations’ in ’94 😉 I think it is more the historical feelings of seeing ‘mighty’ England with pie on their face.
I was looking at the draw and it should be a Spain/Croatia QF which I can’t call should a cracker that one but I don’t see England beating either of those sides. One or two injuries and England could find themselves in real bother; which is something similar to what Columbia might find themselves in if Rodriguez really is out they rely on him so it’s better for England if he’s injured (Sorry Mito)
I think what the argument is (from the Irish side anyway) that the Belgium reserves showed they were better than the English ones and showed that they can deal with any injuries or tired legs later in the competition better than England might but I agree with you I’m glad we’re on this side of the draw. I was shouting “miss” at my screen when Rashford went through on goal last night :hippo:
…but again, who cares that Belgium reserves beat England reserves? Neither side is going to play a reserve XI again. I’m very happy with Rashford coming off the bench, Cahill is good cover at the back, RLC has shown promise, I thought TAA and Rose did ok (apart from the goal!!)…it’s fine and they all got game time and it gave the first XI outfield players a rest.
One or two injuries and yeah we could be in bother. Same for everyone that though? Take Modric and Perisic out of Croatia, they’ll suffer. Isco and Ramos out of Spain, Hazard and Lukaku out of Belgium…..
That’s true. I’d rather start Rashford over RLC if Alli is out though. The XI should be grand I wouldn’t really be changing much on it though.
That’s actually very true. I didn’t think about that for Croatia it would be interesting to see what their media is talking about.
some of the European media is a lot worse than the English…..honest!!
……..
Hello folks, hope your teams are doing well. Could I get a RMT from a few people?
SpecialK,
looks pretty good for me aside from Varela who looks like he has lost his place with the Uruguayans playing 5 at the back….or 3 at the back with wing backs, however you want to look at it!
I wasn’t sure if he lost his place or was being rested. Might actually bring in a Belgian defender for him or Stones. Thanks Cookie!
That’s me. Second and most likely the final draft. Max Cap activated.
it’s very red!!
Yes Cookie, very easy with Belgium 😆
lol!!!!
I like the Croatian punt. I do think they are favourites for the tournament if you only base it on the group stages, don’t think I’ll go as heavy as you though!
Were you not concerned Boyata started last night? I would switch him out if you can.
Exactly twenty years ago Croatia knocked out Germany from the last 16 and went to finish 3rd in France. They look solid once again and might repeat that success.
You are right about Boyta, I might look elsewhere.
