Welcome to Fantasy Football Captain Picks Gameweek 22

With the deadline looming on Friday and a DGW in the offing it is time to focus the mind on where best to place that all important armband. Here are Rosco, OddDane and Init to help you along…

Rosco – Bruno Fernandes v Palace (H) & Leeds (H)

Unless you’re brave, mad or ‘a casual’ (I sometimes wish I was), then breaking from the usual Haaland captaincy is a rare thing. However, with a tasty home double for Manchester United, that time has come.

Fresh off his 19-pointer in DGW20 Bruno Fernandes offers managers the perfect opportunity to go against the crowd in a week where most FPL managers will back ‘the other guy’. Of course, that in and of itself could be a bold move given that I expect Marcus Rashford to exceed 100% EO (effective ownership) by some distance given that many will also opt to use their TC chip. However, whisper it quietly, but Bruno Fernandes may be the better pick. This is by no means an easy sell.

Since the WC break, Rashford comes out on top for both FPL points (46 to 39) and goals (5 to 2) and whilst Bruno however has more assists (3 to 1), Rashford still comes out on top for NPxGI (Non-Penalty goal involvement) with 4.43 to Bruno’s 3.77. Still with me? Great! With the introduction of Weghorst, Manchester United may be less reliant on Rashford’s goals, he may even get some much-needed rest given his recent injury scares. Bruno will play 90 in both matches, and as he showed in DGW20, he can still hit those heady heights of the 2020/21 season, the injury to Christian Eriksen will also likely mean Bruno is back on set-piece duty. Is that all you’ve got? I can hear you cry! Well, yeah, but that doesn’t mean to say it’s not a good idea right?

Let’s see now, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. The captain is the one that gives extra points right? Because I looked at my team and I could’ve sworn that’s definitely not how it works… Ah well, let’s get on with it. Next chap up for picks is Marcus, Mr. Marcus Rashford of Manchester United that is.

As the keen FF247 reader you are, you will undoubtably have seen that Marcus and his teammates have not one, but two home games to tend to this game week. As icing on the cake those two encounters are against Crystal Palace and Leeds, both of which are no strangers to the odd ball in their net.

Over the past five games the Eagles have conceded 9 goals, and Leeds 5. Okay that latter one isn’t too bad. Unsurprisingly though, they’re both fighting against Leicester and Wolves on who has had the most xG conceded (I do believe LCFC narrowly “won” that one). Finally, I’m pretty sure that the Eagles and quite possibly also Leeds have been worst on shots and big chances conceded since GW17, although admittedly I haven’t bothered to check all details properly (*Look. They’re just not that great at defending, alright? Ok? Okay then!).

Rashford’s form on the other hand is no joking matter, over the span of his last 6 games he has had 6 returns (5G, 1A). Blanking only against, err… Nope.

Okay, it was Crystal Palace. Well, he’ll want to change that, won’t he!?

Moving on. Last night’s game against Forest was no exception mind you, even if he just got away with an assist (or was it two!?).

What say you lads and lassies, is Marcus your man for the week? That was rhetorical, of course he is!

*As a Rashford owner myself some unconscious bias may have applied in writing this great, great piece of art little note… and some pinot noir may have affected the equation too…

Init – Haaland v Spurs (a)

I think I may have got the thin end of the wedge this week! And it’s not often you say that when all you have to do is promote Erling’s chances of scoring you some (many) FPL points!

Now of course, he doesn’t have a DGW like his Manchester rivals, his turn at that particular delight comes at us next week. On which point, he has Villa at home and Arsenal away – just something to point out as many will be weighing up the TC so you have to consider whether you think those are more worthy of it on him than perhaps some of this week’s doublers as presented to you above. One point on that is that his Villa game is at home and let’s face it that usually means hatty time for him.

Unfortunately, this week’s game is away and he and City alike have been less potent on their travels. Of his 25 league goals only 7 have been away but then he’s only played in 8, so hardly still slacking, and the home goals have been coming in clumps of 3!

Since Pep decided enough was enough, which was roughly about a league game and a half ago, and exactly at half-time, ironically against Spurs, City have put in 7 league goals, and Haaland has inevitably plundered the majority with 4.

Should you, for whatever reason, wish not to risk a DGW Captain, you really need to be on the best of the other horses available. And this guy is Red Rum. On steroids.

The confessional…
This is where we ask our entire writing team to tell us who they think they will pick this week…. There are more caveats and get out clauses than an awkward conversation between Todd Boehly and Hakin Ziyech over flight costs back from Paris to London.
