Welcome to Fantasy Football Captain Picks Gameweek GW2

GW1 proved almost predictable in terms of our picks, with Salah and Haaland off to a flier, Kane and Son proving ‘Spursy’, and Sterling finding that goals are always seemingly hard to come by for Chelsea forwards, past and present. Here’s how our writers fared:

1. GP — Haaland, 26 points. Two goals and all 3 bonus points. We have a feeling we may be typing that sentence an awful lot this season.

2. Rosco — Salah, 24 points. A goal, an assist and 2 bonus points. We have a feeling we may be typing that sentence an awful lot this season…

3. Kop — Son, 10 points. A solitary assist when Spurs scored 4.

4. OddDane — Sterling, 6 points. Just a clean sheet to show for his debut.

5. Init — Kane, 4 points. See Son minus even the assist.

A right mixed bag, then, but that’s FPL for you. Let’s go see what this week’s team make of GW2…

Rosco — Haaland vs Bournemouth (H)

“Words Are Not Enough” / “I Know Him So Well” was the fifth double A-side single released by British dance-pop musical group Steps. “Words Are Not Enough” was a new composition while “I Know Him So Well” was a cover of the 1984 song by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson from the musical Chess.

Every day is a school day kids. Anywho, in this instance, I felt words were not enough (or you could argue, not really needed) so I did this instead!

Jamesimmo — Cancelo vs Bournemouth (H)

Ok, so, you get it now: Bournemouth are bad. They started off with a 2–0 win last weekend, granted, but our FPL plans for GW2 were based on Bournemouth being bad. So… Bournemouth are really bad.

Moving on to some facts now, West Ham only mustered 0.34 xG vs Man City, and that was an away match for Pep’s defence. You’d have to think that chances will be scarcer still for visiting Bournemouth on Saturday, which makes a 5–6 point (factoring in another annoying yellow card) floor for Cancelo very likely. Then, João just needs a goal or an assist — of which there were 12 for him last season — to reward his brave backers with a double-digit haul. It’s that simple! Keep in mind that he’s a Bonus Point whore (even without a goal involvement).

I’m sure that you, too, are not now convinced that Cancelo’s a much better option than Haaland for this one…

Gear — Salah vs Crystal Palace (H)

This week I present to you Mo Salah, the man many of you refer to as perma-captain, and for good reason! There is nothing I can say about Salah that has not already been said. The man is a machine and started this season just as many of us expected, with a double-digit haul.

Normally, Salah at home to Crystal Palace would be a no brainer. However, Haaland’s performance last weekend means those that of us that own both have a real decision on their hands. At the time of writing, our captain poll has the two of them level at 45.8% each of the votes.

All I will do at this stage is give you some stats that will hopefully aid you in your decision-making process. I’ll start with the fact that Liverpool are entertaining a Crystal Palace side who they have beaten in each of their last 10 premier league meetings. During this time, they have averaged 3 goals per game and for Salah’s part, he has bagged himself 7 goals and 6 assists in just 7 matches. Make of that what you will, but it should provide something of a counterweight to Haaland mania!

OddDane – Jarrod Bowen vs Nottingham Forest (A)

Right, so the preferred picks this week clearly are ‘name a City player’ and Liverpool Salah, but what if you have none of them (*ahem* good thing there’s an extra wildcard from the World Cup!) or you’re just in the mood for something different?

Well then, who better to target than ‘mister 200+ points’ Jarrod Bowen who had a breakout 21/22 season and will be facing off against Nottingham Forest in their upcoming away game.

Nottingham Forest saw Newcastle run amok allowing them some 19-20 shots and a wholesome 10 shots on target and who are topping the expected goals against (xGA) stats along with teams like Everton, Fulham and well… West Ham. Granted Newcastle did seem to have put their groove on, but then one could argue the Hammers will come a’ swingin’ too – right? They certainly will want a palete cleanser after their opening game against City!

So, despite his somewhat ‘off’ game vs City, Bowen could find the form and space to deliver come Sunday. Last season saw Bowen register 12 goals and 10 assists (17 in FPL!), averaging c. 5.7 points per game and an underlying non-penalty G+A/90 of 0.66 across 36 games – this put him amongst the (non-penalty) outputs of players like Sterling, Mané, Ronaldo and Kane. In other words, if they find good form on Sunday, Bowen knows where to find the goal!

Besides, do we really think Henderson will be having seven-eight saves every game? Somethings got to give, and it might just be from Jarrod next time!

Mind you, a word of moderation. Owning Bowen in FPL is a bit of a differential, so giving him the cap’n responsibility will certainly promise you a big swing in rankings.

The confessional…
This is where we ask our entire writing team to tell us who they think they will pick this week…. AKA as ‘Looks like Carolyn misspelt ‘Håland’

    A) Team Darwin (with 0.5m ITB)
    Or
    B) Team Jesus

    What do you think?

(I’d probably use the extra 0.5m in Team Darwin to upgrade one of my 4.5m MFs to Willock or Bailey, or to upgrade my 5.0m DF to Perisic)

Just nervous about going without Jesus given his ownership, but I have a feeling Darwin is going to absolutely haul this season.

Darwin for me IanD. Jesus and Arsenal may have been prolific in pre-season but neither usually are in the league. They may become it but we know that Liverpool are and he will be the main beneficiary. Surely has to start now too.

I recon Darwin is your man. Clearly there will be weeks when Jesus outscores him but overall I recon that’s the way forward. Or you switch to 3 up front and have both… Though you may need to wait until you wildcard unless you fancy a bit point hit this early on…

It’s hard to get Darwin, Jesus AND Haaland.

This is what it would look like…

I do like this team but it means losing Kulusevski and Ederson… (and I really like the Spurs coverage from Kulusevski – he was on in GW1)

Would also mean playing a 4-3-3 with either Willock, Pereira or Williams starting each week.

I’m basically choosing 2 from Darwin, Jesus and Kulusevski…

A for me plus the 0.5 ITB gives you a little flexibility with the price drops/rises

Great flowchart! This needs to be a weekly fixture just to pick my whole team! Quick question, which 4.5m keeper would you have out of the bunch?
