Grab, Avoid or Bore Off! – Fantasy Premier League 2018-19
International break time can only mean one thing, it is ‘Bore off’ time. This time around we have brought some fresh faces in while still keeping one from the old guard.
Smash makes his second appearance on GABO, you will usually find him on Team News covering pressers where he is always fighting with Wolves & Watford and misspelling Doucouré, much to Frenchie’s delight.
Kralin makes his debut. I haven’t crossed paths often with Kralin on the boards so I asked someone to describe him for me and this is what he told me. “18th century gentleman. Puts on a full 3 piece suit and top hat before siting down to comment on the site. Probably has a butler to type his words out for him.”
Kop is basically old furniture here at GABO. He is an original on this article and anytime he is not busy fighting with anyone who has a positive outlook on life we are happy to have him.
Ok, enough of the intros, let’s get it on!

FF247 Champions League 2018/19 League.
The code to join is TMILEI3FTY
Not being overly precious about it please try and keep it to site members, it’s just more fun that way if we know who we are all playing against, thanks.
You doing a champions league fantasy team?
If you mean him personally, yes. A site team, I doubt although if he wanted to do it, I be happy to run it with him.
That would be a doubles team Mito 😉
Yes Aaron, we all play it every year. There won’t be an official website team though, we never do one for that game, only FPL and previously MLS. No idea on the MLS one now actually since Mito sacked me
You can’t be sacked from something you were never doing.
Team done I’ve joined the league
I’m in (it to win it)!!!!!!!!
On Gosh, are we going to play this one as well ZL?
I just made a team! Rather simples, and I don’t have the Mental one 😆 I didn’t play last year so why not give it a go! 😉
I don’t know. You should know me well. I used to play the CL, the EL, the Telegraph, Sky, the Sun, the Mirror and every fantasy football game under the sun. Then, after some therapy 😆 I stopped. Las year GoalMachine lured me back to the CL one but I hardly paid any attention. I might have a go again :woot:
CL is fine as it’s a different game, it’s playing all those Sky Sports and Telegraphs and Suns that are Premier League games same as FPL… That does your head in I suppose! 😆
Exactly. The only difference is that the player’s prices are not the same. Not any longer :noshake:
One thing I will never try again is that FPL Draft. I did it last year when it was introduced. Absolute bollocks. You are waiting on a queue to select a player and then realise that he has been already picked by someone else in the mini league. You have to stay with almost the same team for the entire season. It might be very popular in North America but I hate it :bandit:
Draft is very popular here, but not fpl draft, that is shitty anywhere.
Best sort of draft is auction style. You get a certain amount of money and you bid on players. You have to leave at least one dollar back for each position you still need, but you can go in hard for big players and the rest can be average or you can go for middle of the road players and have a more balanced side. Auction is fun because you have a fair shot at every player.
Plus in the NFL there is over 30 teams which means you can get stuff in waivers that can change or help you win a league. FPL draft only has 20 teams to pick from in waivers and if you got 10 managers or more, there isn’t much to pick up. Very different than NFL where waivers will probably be the deciding factor on whether you are just average or have a realistic shot to win the league.
FF247 has a NFL league, but of course we do. We also do cycling, cricket and all kinds of football related fantasy leagues.
We don’t talk about cycling anymore!!!
I’ve heard about it in many MLS podcasts, it’s a mania in USA. But the FPL Draft was a failure.
I wonder if they will ever do fantasy game for the new UEFA Nations League. I am glad they brought this instead of the usual friendlies. It makes the games more meaningful.

NICEWON!! Although I’m actually off to a good start in EPL Fantasy this year (early days at least) — I kinda started and continued UCL Fantasy since I always did and continued to do horribly in the EPL!!
Ok I’m in. Although my local team (when I’m in England) have already been eliminated!
Celtic?
No English team. Have played in the last seven champions league competitions.
It was a joke mate. Specifically for GP in fact but he’s not for biting
But whilst you’re turning it into a quiz I’ll have a think but I can’t immediately recall any English being eliminated from the qualifiers. Clue?
Home ground is Park Hall in Shropshire
Otieno,
Would this team happen to play in the same colours as those who shall not be named?
Init – I like it
Indeed a very similar green and white hoop
Wow.
The New Saints huh? Very interesting . . . .
You got it although for a few of us old uns it’s still Oswestry town FC
Wow.
Cool to have you here. As Jeff Stelling used to say:
…. “They’ll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions tonight!” ……
Spurs won’t move until after Xmas, says The Daily Mail…
Talksport are saying that Spurs will maybe play ALL their games at Wembley for this season. Prem/FA to schedule a meeting if, IF, the delays continue…
As always, thanks to Mito for putting this together.
Kralin, you’re doomed!!! 😉
Haha, brilliant article this!!! Funny and informative at the same time!!! Plus it always tickles me in the right place when Kralin uses the phrase “might be pushing your luck a bit”!!! Never gets old!!! 😆
It’s the way I tell ’em, ZL. But I’m pleased to bring a little light to your life.
Off-topic, and on the off-chance you may know, but how well regarded is Unknown Soldiers by Linna in Finland? I’ve been toying with the idea of reading it for ages. Would be nice to know of its reputation (if any) in its country of origin.
It’s huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge in Finland, one of two books that are most read and most known here in Finland! It’s a great book!! The other one is “Seven Brothers” by Aleksis Kivi, who was the first writer in Finnish language, the ones before him were writing in Swedish (you know Finland was part of Sweden for centuries?). But yeah, the “Unknown Soldier” (the original title is not a plural by the way) is massive in Finland, they read it in school and it’s widely regarded as the best Finnish book of all time, there are also countless movie adaptations and so on! Linna is a hero here
Although I gotta add a lot of its charm is in the different dialects of Finnish language, so the book depicts these soldiers who are fighting in the war and they come from all over Finland, having different dialects, and Linna has just about every Finnish dialect in the book, and there are quite many! I am from the capital myself and so a lot of these dialects, to me, are both interesting and funny at the same time! That’s a rather big part of the book and is obviously lost in translation…
Great answers, thanks.
Hey guys – toying with the idea of a WC, as a few issues I’m not happy with in my current team, but not convinced it’s WC-worthy… First pic below is my current team (I have 1 FT and a big fat zero ITB)… Second one is the WC team that’s tempting me.
So, stick or twist?!
Or…
I don’t think that’s worth it myself tbh! Think Neves could do as well or better than Hughes and maybe even Fraser. I like Arnie and be a shame to drop Moura but if want those 2 forwards how about:
Arnie/King/Moura/Ralls >
Vardy/Ings/Pereyra/Billing(or Hojbjerg)
Does that work? Would be 2 less moves and think leaves tiny bit itb so would allow you to take a couple of price changes and do it over couple of weeks rather than WC?
Kezzy,
Looking at the players you plan to bring in I really don’t think you need to WC. These players are unlikely to hurt you if you don’t own them.
Cheers Kop Warrior and RedKev – definitely good points. Didn’t think of your point about those players not hurting me if i don’t have them. Yeah RedKev, those moves over a few GWs look good.
Think you’ve convinced me to not pull the trigger and roll the transfer… now just need to stay away from it through the international break boredom!
Agree with the others just not worth it
Sounding unanimous now! Cheers Smash. My bench still looks horrendous (to me anyway) – Neves/Ralls/Peltier – but I reckon I can run with it, save a transfer and perhaps remedy it all with a 3 transfer -4 pt hit week in the next GW.
Yeah exactly. Something major injury wise could come up then you will be at an advantage.
Stick. The players you’re bringing in might seem good now but the mids are dirt cheap for a reason. Soon enough their form will drop and you’ll be stuck with a new bench full of duds
Hi all. I’m also toying with the wildcard… International break maddness… Time to drop Salah! For me, Hazard and the money are a bargain exchange especially with Mane and Robertson Liverpool cover.
Any thoughts anyone? Have I spread myself too thin? Should I put Milner in as further pool cover? Has the Perreyra boat sailed do we think? Holebas over Cook?
Any thoughts at all much appreciated as I’m slowly going mad look at my screen
(0.4 itb)
It’s a fine looking team GMan, no doubt – just a few thoughts though. Schurlle and Mitro seems like too much cover from Fulham. On Pereyra, I don’t think his ship has sailed, but has a couple of tough games coming up after the break. That said, I’d consider Holebas instead of Cook, as Watford look strong on set pieces and may nick a goal or two despite the tough fixtures.
Going without Salah is the big one for me though. I definitely see the argument of Hazard plus money, but I’m firmly on the stick-with-Mo train. Mane is on fire, but his stats suggest he is massively over-performing, whereas Salah is under-performing (albeit very slightly). Long term, I think Salah is more likely to keep up the performance levels and if he goes nuts, your madness is going to be amplified!
Though, if you’re set on no Salah, the team looks good, but maybe look at Schurlle to Fraser, Cook to Holebas?
Agree with Kezzy here. Plus Ings is a bit expensive to be on the bench
Do you think that teams are concentrating on stopping Salah,as the dangerman, leaving Mane to score the goals from the space provided?
I could be wrong but I believe Salah has still got more chances. Mane has just been a lot more clinical this year. There could be something in that though
I saw an article where Klopp said Mane had finally understood that he was a great player and deserved his place on the field. Looks like his confidence has received a huge boost and he is producing the goals.
Seems like a benching headache to me
I’d downgrade someone in that front-8 if not for any upgrade then just to have some money in the bank! You don’t know, you might need it sooner or later!
