Grab, Avoid or Bore Off! – Fantasy Premier League 2018-19

Whilst we all hate International Breaks to disrupt our FPL flow they are at least good for one thing and that’s an opportunity to put some of our favourite FPL managers on the spot and ask them a few pertinent questions. This week though we’ve decided to give them a break and have instead drafted in some others… 😉

First up is everybody’s favourite professional Geordie. Long gone are the days of steel workers and miners filling the terraces of Newcastle, your modern day Toon hero is a bit of a lush who drinks Prosecco most nights and takes showers with his dogs, apparently! Except of course on a Sunday, on the tipple front anyway, no idea about his pet shower schedule! Guinness or Newcastle Brown you ask? Noooooo… champagne, naturally! A warm welcome to Rosco.

To be fair to our second contestant if he was ever called a ‘favourite’ he’d take it as an insult as he makes a living out of being everybody’s worst nightmare. He’ll hate me saying this though: he’s actually a genuinely nice guy in real life! Please welcome the sheep in devil’s clothing that is Mito. A frosty welcome to Mito!

Our final contestant (no idea why I keep calling them contestants, but let’s roll with it!) is a bit of an enigma. He’s well known in FF247 circles but mainly ‘behind the scenes’ as he’s our main IT brain. He’s been slow to make a name for himself in the front of house community but has been taking baby steps in that direction this season. Probably doesn’t help that whenever he does some smart arse (Mito) usually welcomes him to the site as a newbie! He’s actually a member of the FF247 Site Team committee, and provides us with invaluable copy each week, albeit often unintentionally! A warm welcome to Floydeth.

Ok, let’s get it on!

    I’m on my WC currently…

Which team looks like better for FPL points?
I kinda like my stacked midfield bunch….

    Fabianski/Hamer
    Alonso/Robbo/Jonny/Bennet/WanBis
    Sterling/Richarlison/Salah/Hazard/Martial
    Arnie/Jiminez/Success

    Vs

    Fabianski/Hamer
    Alonos/Robbo/Laporte/Doherty/WanBis
    Sterling/Hazard/Martial/Fraser/Richarlison
    Aguero/Arnie/Jiminez

      roccerfeller says:

I know second team looks.overall stronger but

      1) my preference is to play 3-5-2

      2) Salah looks so good. And he will keep bringing the returns. Him and Aguero have similar point output right now but that he’s playing in that central striker role and is their most important player! His underlying stats are just crazy good

      • roccerfeller says:

Also Jonny could become Digne in option #1 if I can farm an extra 0.1 during my wildcard haha

      • inittowinit says:

Must be a 3rd way then, one that looks like the 2nd but with no Hazrard and a downgrade elsewhere also to bring Salah back?

        • roccerfeller says:

You’re feeling option 2 eh mate.

That’s fair, it’s a stronger team all said and done

I fancy Haz as well, that’s my problem haha. I want them all!

Aguero vs Salah; in my head I’m treating Salah as a striker just in the midfield position

I originally had a side with lacazette but then I would have to forfeit that power 5 midfield

If we take Haz out though, for fun, I can build this team with 0.1 ITB

          Fabianski or Patricio/Hamer
          Alonso/Robbo/Jonny/Bennet/WanBis
          Sterling/Salah/Richarlison/Martial/Camarasa
          Aguero/Arnie/Jiminez

        • roccerfeller says:

I have a strong preference for 3-5-2 just because it has done me very well in the past. Last season focusing on a 3-5-2 with a playing bench (mostly 4.5’s, oh how I miss thee Ruben Loftus Cheek) was my secret over the Xmas break

        • inittowinit says:

That’s not far off what I hoped it would look like with the changes. How does killing Jimenez to the cheapest possible and perhaps if needed one of Bennett or Wan-B likewise improve the 5th mid spot?

        • roccerfeller says:

That’s a really good suggestion. Seems to me the cheapest possible player with a chance of playing off the bench is Success

          This would be

          Fabianski/Hamer
          Alonso/Robbo/Doherty/Bennet/WanBis
          Sterling/Salah/Martial/Richarlison/4.4-5.3 price
          Ageuro/Arnie/Success

Could be Diagana or Camarasa plus 0.8 ITB
          Or
          Kenedy and 0.4 ITB

But the 3-5-2 wouldn’t be quite as strong

          A few thoughts:
          1) I did get fraser in for 5.6 so although I gain 0.3 to spend with selling, I lose the ability to have some for “5.6” that offers his stats (unless I went Brooks…which is an option… though I am not sure how nailed he will be when king returns)

          2) I also rate Hazard quite high. When He scores he gets fantastic bonus and he should be fun to own during this xmas run

I worry the most about Aguero with his already up in the air game time as well as this apparent hamstring injury. But I also know Aguero is by far the best striker option

There’s something about a midfield of
Salah Haz Raz Tony and Rich that just feels badass

        • roccerfeller says:

The one thing is if I got balanced and sell Salah for that extra $$$, sure I get Jiminez and Fraser

But then the conundrum to bench one of them comes into play! I prefer a dependable starting 11 that maximizes value with 3 players on the bench who are literally just SOS emergency players that I can depend on for 2pts.

I hate seeing 12 points on the bench if somewhat solid players are on there. There is that range of “too cheap for the pitch but too expensive for the bench” haha

        • inittowinit says:

Off to bed roccer so will have to read that properly tomorrow and respond when I can as it looks very complicated to decipher right now!

        • inittowinit says:

*Pick the bones out of. Not decipher.

        • roccerfeller says:

Cheers init! No problem mate. It’s only 7pm where I am currently must be late across the pond! Rest up sleep well you’ve been helping many of us out today! Take care

        • inittowinit says:

Morning roccer! That last one but with Hazard for Salah and Fraser back in is probably what I’d go with. Don’t suppose that’d allow a more premium keeper to sneak in also would it?

        • roccerfeller says:

          Morning init!
It’s tough to pick between these lads haha

Making those moves, team looks closer to #2

          Fabianski/4.0
          Alonso/Robbo/Doherty/4.2/WanBis
          Sterling/Salah/martial/Fraser/5.2
          Aguero/Arnie/Jiminez

Jiminez to success free up an extra 0.8

Aguero to Laca would free up an extra 1.6

Would give me 2.4 to play with…could put it towards premium keeper but I’m not sure if the extra $ is worth it for anyone other than Ederson, vs value keepers like Patricio and Fabianski who with his save points I think will really start getting some points

If I put that extra $ into retaining Laporte and Doherty:

          Fabianski/Hamer
          Alonso/Robbo/Laporte/Doherty/WanBis
          Salah/Sterling/Martial/Fraser/5.9
          Laca/Arnie/success

Or I could keep the back a bit cheap

          Fabianski/Hamer
          Alonso/Robbo/Doherty/Bennet/WanBis
          Salah/sterling/martial/Fraser/Richarlison
          Laca/Arnie/success

          With 0.7 ITB

        • inittowinit says:

Roccer, been that many versions now I’m resorting to pics of them smile

The one below, if Salah is Hazard can that 5th mid be Richarlison? And presuming so what’s then left?

        • roccerfeller says:

          Cheers init

Yep with that same team, if Salah, becomes Hazard that fifth becomes Richarlison and I have 0.2 left ITB

        • inittowinit says:

Sounds like a plan, Stan? I appreciate there’s no Salah but that feels like a very potent front 7. With very little compromise at the back either really.

        • roccerfeller says:

Sounds good init! That’s the direction I will go then laugh

Thank you so much mate. Really appreciate it!

I will try to farm a little bit of value now over the next week hehe. NomdeGuerre and OldGoat would be proud – I hope!

          Cheers mate

        • inittowinit says:

No probs. Just need some random injury now and you’ll be back to square one! smile

Gallow (NDG) always loved a pound. Old Goat is awol, he should really be on here with everyone else, if you see him elsewhere round him up!

      Kralin says:

I like the firepower of team 1. If you could somehow get Doherty into that side it would be very strong.

Only quibble is Success. The 3/5/2 is tough this year as no reliable <5m striker has emerged. So if you are going to play a 3/5/2 then a compromise mid of Fraser or Kenedy seems essential (and could possibly be rotated with an Ings or Jiminez type striker).

It's hard having Sterling and Aguero without big compromises elsewhere so best to make your choice over which one and stick with that.

If I were wildcarding now I'd have Hazard in there (which I know you have).

      • roccerfeller says:

        Cheers Kralin!
If I keep fraser instead of moving him to Richarlison, I can upgrade Jonny to Doherty but it leaves me with 5.4 mil for that third striker

        Team would look like this:
        Fabianski/4.0
        Alonso/Robbo/Doherty/Bennet/WanBis
        Salah/Hazard/Sterling/Fraser/Martial
        Arnie/Jiminez/5.4

I am hopeful to farm an extra 0.1-0.2 over the break from risers… currently have Laporte in

Under 5.4 though I don’t fancy anyone over success given he looks good and gets at least 1 point but that’s just the first team

Success provides an extra 0.8 to play with as well but I agree he’s not the player that fills the would with confidence

        • Kralin says:

The only other thing you could do is go rogue and drop Robbo as well, get the cash flowing up into other parts of the team. Robbo to Digne perhaps.

        • roccerfeller says:

          Ah that’s truly.going rogue haha

I love robbo though. Got him and Alonso early so Alonso cost me 6.5 and Robbo 6

I have toyed around with swapping him for Gomez or TAA though and just having a good defensive bench for the rotation weeks.

Oh King Salah, how I crave thee.

Literally once I took him out of my team for Sterling I regretted it

      mkencon says:

I like the first of those two

      • roccerfeller says:

Cheers! The first one is really tempting for me still hahaha

It’s basically treating Salah as my premium striker and committing to a 3-5-2

Will be tough if Salah hauls vs Watford and Sterling is benched post Int’l break again! Salah got 29 pts vs them last year iirc!

        • inittowinit says:

Both teams were in a different place then though Roccer. Plus it was at Anfield. If he gets anywhere near 20 this time I’ll give you the points myself. Really tough call to go without but I reckon the balance is great on the one we discussed above.

With the Mendy injury I’m guessing he will be dropping in price very soon if he hasn’t already. I usually wait as long as possible to do my transfers but seeing as he has to go should I just do it now? Will prob be a straight swap for maybe laporte

    Kruzcampo says:

    Hey Rosco
Mitro is a legend and I come nowhere near him! I only had 1 hit before the last 2 weeks. That was GW4 when I brought in Wally after Richarlie got banned, then I think Coleman got injured later on in the week so I got Alonso which was a great result. Last week Richarlie in for KDB and Murray in for Mitro for better fixtures and Murray price up & Mitro price down.He will be down to 6.5 before the break is over.
This week Maddison out with a red flag and Martial in. Good fixtures and seems to have nailed his position. Mendy gets his surgery so out for 4-6 weeks. Got Obi Wan & Trips injured so only 2 defenders so a hit for Laporte whose price will rise before the break is over.
So only 3 hits over 12 games. If KDB ,,Mendy & Maddison had stayed fit I wouldn’t have needed the last 2 hits. I still have 5 with sick notes so the Free Hit may make an appearance so I have a full team out.
The other problem I am having is captains. Last 3 weeks 2,4 and 6. Getting better!! Maybe Richarlie against Cardiff this next GW.

      Rosco says:

Well I’m on the cappo’s article this week so hopefully I can offer some good choices!

    • 33.2
      bees323 says:

Not sure if I read you correctly…but please don’t use your Free Hit now (if that is what you mean). When we have double game weeks you will wish you had not done so.
      Cheers mate.

      • Kruzcampo says:

        Hey Bees
I have 5 still on a sicknote and I am hoping they are all spoofing and will return fit and rested. I see Richarlie on the bench tonight!. If they are all still out the the Free Hit can come into play. The only other time it is useful is the FA cup rounds 3 or 4. DGW,s are for WC,BB & TC. All you need to do is choose the right chips for the right DGW!

      • inittowinit says:

Agree with Bees here Kruz, absolute last resort to use that chip until either a BGW or a DGW. The original wisdom was that it was best used on the BGW which is the later stages of the FA Cup, 6th R, Q/F’s, but just checked mine now and I actually used it in GW35 last season which was a DGW. Don’t recall the details but it seemed to have worked as I had a high weekly rank for that week and went up over 1k in OR. What I’m saying then basically is, keep it!

        • Kruzcampo says:

I have 10 playing so far but that may change as the break progresses. I need 1 recovery out of 4 sicknotes and all will be well. Although it will leave Arnie away to City & Fraser home to Arsenal. But if it goes downhill and I have 6 to play then I will use it as it is an emergency sticking plaster. That’s what its there for I think.

        • inittowinit says:

Use it however you like, I can but give my two cents. Usually pans out that there’s just enough chips to go around for every BGW and DGW, and you’d be down one. Put it this way, whenever I see a ML rival use a chip on a SGW I smile a little inside. And then mentally write them out of the equation for the final reckoning.

        • Brookyboy says:

Think the saying ‘You can lead a horse to water” applies here Innit laugh

        • inittowinit says:

          That’s the one mate! smile

    mkencon says:

    Aguero & Hazard for me

You keep on laughing at Saints and predicting we’ll go down… Well, you try to guess then against which team Ederson has the most saves thus far? 😉
